The funniest thing about Gru in the opening scene is when he goes to the coffee shop. After freezing everyone in line, and taking someone else’s order, he still tips the barista.
@@Erikk_is_Tired I like to assume the reason he doesn’t pay for the meal but does tip is because he knows that people working in the food industry have terrible paychecks. The first movie is really really good, sequels and spin offs aside. Especially how the intro perfectly summarizes Gru: not a total evil maniacal supervillain, just a normal smart dude with attitude that likes being a douche. It does it in a way that's easy to understand and doesn't drag on for too long. Even his song isn't grand or extreme, it's just a chill tune with enough edge in it to show he's not a good guy.
Despicable Me and Megamind are two legendary movies. Too bad this franchise got milked and Megamind went super under the radar for almost a full decade.
Despite not being particularly huge over the Despicable Me franchise, this theme right here is one of my all-time favourite character themes ever composed. By listening to it alone, you already know everything you need to know about Gru. You don't even need to watch the part of the movie where this theme first plays, no listening to Happy Gru alone already tells you everything about Gru and the type of person he is, which is genuinely a massive feat. for such a simple song.

shame wreck-it-ralph 2 completely ruined him as a character and the other despicable me movies weren't that good due to illumination playing it safe
Ralph was never a villain, Nick Wilde was more of a villain than him at the start lol
@@mrcrunchy2552 there are other Despicable me movies??? It ended on the first for me man
Big hero 6 is a good one too, but wreck it ralph breaks the internet had lost potential like theres almost no point in the movie if the mc who wanted to save herself gone to another game.
Ralph was more of a good antagonist, since he wasn’t necessarily evil but still went against Felix (the ‘protagonist’)

@@Game_Wolf1509 movie critics do like to shit on the face of Despicable Me because ‘it was made by illumination therefore it’s bad!’ Which is just not remotely true. Like if you went to a restaurant, had one bad meal, and said everything was bad, when the best meal was right in front of you.
1 I love, 2 is good, and everything after that, they're all well.... DESPICABLE! (Expect M2)
This song perfectly represents a casual day in the base of a secret organization. Like the theme itself feels like that of a military/government station being represented and toured without any conflict, while the whistle just adds this calm and casualness to it.

Gru is the main character of the "Despicable Me" franchise, which includes the films "Despicable Me," "Despicable Me 2," "Despicable Me 3," and "Minions." He is a former supervillain who worked for the organization known as the Anti-Villain League (AVL) as a consultant to help stop other villains.
Gru is known for his tall and slender figure, his bald head, and his distinctive Eastern European accent. He has a pointed nose and a small mouth, and often wears a black and gray striped scarf that covers most of his face. He is also known for his unusual fashion sense, which includes a variety of different outfits and accessories, such as his flamboyant jumpsuits, his oversized boots, and his iconic black leather gloves.
Throughout the "Despicable Me" films, Gru undergoes a significant transformation, from a ruthless and self-centered villain to a loving and caring father. He adopts three orphaned girls, Margo, Edith, and Agnes, and becomes a devoted parent to them. He also develops a close relationship with his assistant, Dr. Nefario, and his army of mischievous yellow minions.
Despite his reformed ways, Gru still retains some of his supervillain tendencies, and often uses his knowledge of the criminal underworld to help the AVL. He also has a mischievous sense of humor and a quick wit, which often gets him into trouble with his friends and enemies alike.
Overall, Gru is a complex and memorable character who has captured the hearts of audiences around the world. His journey from villain to hero is a testament to the power of love and redemption, and his unique personality and sense of humor have made him one of the most beloved animated characters of all time.
