This whole series is fantastic. I'm currently writing my PhD in History on Curtis LeMay, who flew in B17s as a colonel and as a general during the war. Your attention to accuracy and detail is impressive and rare.

Thank you Kieth for these compelling videos! I can listen to your well-informed narration all day and the imagery you provide is captivating. This is an excellent beginning to a thoroughly researched playlist featuring a Heroic aircraft.....

The Soviet Petlyakov Pe-8 four engine bomber saw limited service in WW2.Also Italy used the Piaggio P.108.

It’s pretty amazing that the bomber’s first flight was 1935. The technology moved very quickly in this time period but the basic design remained unchanged throughout the entire war.

great video! just got to see the memphis belle up close at the airforce museum. she was the 1st bomber that didnt crash on the way home with a suitable name that completed 25 missions. the b-17 hells angles completed 25 mission before the belle, but there was no way high commend would allow a b-17 with that name on a bond tour lol.

The Lanc flew lower, at night, and without the B-17's range or defensive firepower. They could both carry the same bombload, if configured the same.

IF the B-17 never bombed Japan... I am wondering what my father attacked???!!! He was a belly gunner on a B-17 assigned to Iwo Jima. There were quite a few B-17's stationed on Iwo... so I would love for you to check that out and see what you find :)

What is the range comparison with the B-24, hearing conflicting accounts of which had the greater range.

The Germans very definitely fielded a heavy bomber. The Heinkel He 177. It wasn’t produced in large numbers. The soviets also had one.

Indeed but it had only two engine nacelles with two radial engines each. And from the US way to classify the bomber types it's about the number of nacelles not engines.

They also had the four-engine FW-200 Condor, used for maritime patrols and bombing convoys.

37% lost in combat is a pretty "healthy" amount?
