@David Cone In all honesty, I don't mind comedic games/series hinting at or having darker lore, but SMG4's just feels more forced than anything.
Animator syndrome coming in full force
I find it sorta cool that the first scene of this involves Mario, Luigi, Bowser, and SMG4 in the middle of a LAN Party, as though this is a very regular occurrence for them. I know the hassle that goes into dismantling, loading, delivering, and reassembling a desktop computer based off of personal experience of having done similar actions back in '17 whenever I had to travel down to California with Mom to visit Grandma and we'd stay in a hotel for literal WEEKS. The fact that the four of them are in a LAN Party together shows just exactly how close friends Bowser is with Mario and Luigi in this series that he would be willing to host a party, and how the trio trust him enough to bring over their gaming PCs.
It's the little details.

Back when SMG4 still used Mario 64 in his videos, semi-frequently.
i miss these type of videos 2018 was the last good year, now it’s just corporate anime bs
Funny thing is, back at this time in 2018 we were complaining about the LACK of Mario 64 in the videos at the time, this here was considered underuse of Mario 64 and overuse of Gmod back then compared to 2016 and earlier. Crazy to see just how much further the series has shifted to the point where looking at this now, I now see this as pretty good usage of Mario 64 that's more in-line with the classic era than not, which is completely different from my and many others' opinions at the time this was made. The usage of Mario 64 has now decreased so much that I now see these 2018 episodes completely differently from how I did at the time in that regard, it's basically a shifting Overton Window effect.

SMG4 and 3 use them, but also barely.

The fact that 2018 episodes are now considered part of "the old ones." At the time this era was viewed as the "modern SMG4" that's becoming too different from the classics, and we were expressing concern that things were shifting and no longer the same back then. But now the series has continued to shift so far in completely different directions that these 2018 episodes now retroactively feel like they belong more with the Classic Era than with the current era, which is completely different from what it seemed at the time.
