I hope Kurt knows just how important a film this was for a lot of people growing up. I saw it when I was about 11 or 12 in the late 80s, and for years it was my favourite film. I agree with Scott in that Van Damme played second fiddle to Kurt in this film (for years I always saw him as a villain due to his role as Ivan), and I always wanted to be Jason.
I grew up with the UK VHS cut of the film ,which is slightly different to the other version, but either way, it was a genuine landmark for me as a young boy. I'll go as far as saying I even prefer it to Rocky as an overall viewing experience. Also, it took me years to find any love for the sequels because they didn't have Kurt in them. I like them now, but back then it was a sore point.
Anyway, thank you Kurt, and thank you Scott for validating all us old 80s/90s VHS martial arts film junkies. Video rental night was special, and these films made it that way, so it's great to hear from all these guys again.

Same with me! I remember i was very confused when Van Damme did later a movie when he played twin brothers, i mean a double role. One of the twins looked exactly like Ivan Kreshinsky, i mean the hairstyle etc.
And yes, its not negative, but Van Damme like Dolph Lundgren are simply awesome as Ivan Kreshinsky and Ivan Drago!
It is always funny to me when i see Jean-Claude as Frank Dux in Bloodsport or Dolph as He-Man in Masters of the Universe...since they played such bad ass villains in NRNS and Rocky 4.

Watched No Retreat No Surrender when I was in the army back in the 80's. Me and fellow soldiers would go to Denver regularly and compete in tournaments. Since then I would watch movie night before tournaments. Became a tradition, even when my kids started training and competing.

I saw No Retreat No Surrender in the theater as a kid and I'll tell you what it is about that movie.
To have the ghost of Bruce Lee be your personal trainer would be the coolest thing ever to me, second JCVD blew me away in the opening scene, by the end I KNEW I had just witnessed a new huge future star in martial arts films.
And EVERYONE in that movie is a exceptional martial artist hands down!
