3rd vid I've watched of yours tonight John. Far more interesting and entertaining that the rubbish on tele. Took one look at the TV mag and it was a no brainer - Fish Locker viewing time. Thanks John, Phil Manchester 👍
Chris king - Thankyou very much. Good luck on your trip this weekend. 👍🏻🎣 Hopefully you’ve found the vids useful. I’m out filming today for more of the small boat owner/user vid playlist.😉👍🏻🛥
When I used go boat fishing I would loved going after rays. I was constantly told by the rest of the lads my tackle was going overboard as I would use a brass swivel to light wire trace to brass clip and steel hook. The days when it was blanking for everyone I would always catch rays and I put it down to the small electric current between brass and steel caused by the sea water (told it by some salty sea dog). Not knowing if its true but I heard rays etc sense small electric current in wounded fish like sharks and it worked nearly every time.
Hi John great video as always! Would like to ask on a tip or advice for fishing for rays from shore...... rigs, line strength and bait ect, I know of two marks where a fair few rays have been landed but no luck for me yet..... thanks in advance 🎣
Hi john I'm about to purchase my first boat rod and been seeing good reviews on the ugly stik gx2 I was just wondering if its worth purchasing and if so which lb class I should get as they do 12 to 20 a 20 to 30 or a 30 to 50lb, ill be targeting conger tope ling the usual big stuff or is there a better rod for around the 100 quid mark i should purchase many thanks.
Graham Laverack - To some extent a drogue would slow it down. In an Ideal world I would have put out a stern anchor, but both mean messing around rigging one up and another rope for the the lines/fish to get snagged around. The only time I have ever really used a drogue is to slow down the speed of drift when fishing on the drift. 😉
Cheers for that mate. You may remember from previous questions we use a Rib which because it has very little draft can get blown about in a wind so just looking for ways to make life a bit easier !
Graham Laverack - Yes mate. I remember - son in laws isn’t it. 😉👍🏻🎣 A fore and aft anchor is the best way I have found to stop swinging around in a wind against tide situation.
Ha Ha yes that’s it John. As for the Stern anchor, I think we’ll wait until we’ve mastered putting one off the bow first ! Your vids help a ton so keep em coming 👍 we’re down next week, first time since September so fingers crossed !
lefty940 - Haha. There is no answer for that one I’m afraid. Some days the dogs are there in force others they aren’t. This was one of those days. You can try a few things to try and dissuade them. Like using bigger baits or bigger hooks. But unfortunately you have 2 options when getting plagued by dogs. Fish through them and hope they leave, or go home.haha. 👍🏻🎣
- I absolutely love it, I don't see how anyone couldn't enjoy being out on the rocks, beach or open water. Its even better when you get to share what you love with other passionate people.
Selwyn Newson - No I don’t personally. I do have a friend that likes me to keep one for him every once in a while. We like to practice catch and release where possible. 95% of the fish we catch are released. We only keep ones that are accidentally deephooked and won’t go back etc or something special like a haddock 😉

Great days fishing. Like your catch and release. Not so many rays in the Fal nowadays.
Edmund Eldergill - Sadly that is true. There are still a few places that hold them but not so many large ones anymore.
Ya got a nice few ray there well done great video
Wow. This was an old one. Thanks Tony. 👍🏻
Old but gold I watch all ur video's old and new there's always something new to learn
Caught my first ray when I was a kid. Soon found out why they were called Thornbacks :-) Another quality video.
- Haha. They are bloodie thorny aren't they. This was one of our first ever videos. We have come a long way from there i feel. :)
We used to get loads rays in tramel nets in winter my dad used to love eating them
I've not eaten skate in years.

Jeff Cole - I have heard the same type of thing before myself. Unsure of how accurate it is. It would make sense. 👍🏻

- Leon, sorry for that late reply. I have covered ray fishing from the shore in a few videos. Rig, baits, tactics etc.

- Have a look on The FishLocker Workshop channel. I have done an honest review video on the GX2 range. 😊
@@TheFishLocker thanks John 👍
Hi John. Regarding the boat swinging around with wind over tide. Would a Drogue ( Drift Chute ) put off the stern help to stabilise it a little more ?

Nice video. How did you manage to avoid the dogfish? if i put mackerel down where i live its like the kennel club

Good session there I live in the same area is it worth targeting the thornbacks over winter or are they long gone now
- No they are there all year round. Ive had some last week and this vid was done last winter. ;)
Thanks mate giving it a go on the weekend first time anchoring and have seen your other vid on it slightly nervous but has to be done
adam harvey - Have you watched the two anchoring videos I’ve put up?
Yes mate very helpful thanks for those 👍
lovely choice to have though

Do you eat the ray
