I do not miss row markers. The coolest part to me is when planting the end rows you have no gaps or overlaps. Everything is flush and meets up perfectly! Looks so nice.

I remember when farmers had to raise & lower the markers by hand.
It is amazing what the technology can accomplish.
@@SteveHolsten back when a four row planter was a big shot farmer. We hired somebody to plant, pick and chop corn. We had 21 milk cows buying equipment was not in the buget. Grain drill, plow, rack, bisc, sickle mower, drag and baler own equipment line up. My how times have changed
Yep, BUT here is the problem! When the GPS fails and it WILL you can't plant PERIOD but with markers you could ACTUALLY plant until you get your now dead-tech fixed. I'm a Deere technician and I would NEVER EVER have a planter without markers!!
I quit farming in Mn. in 1983, this is the most interesting channel that I have found. Love the videos, and all of the information. Man how things have changed.

On our farm we are running our JD's fully autonomous on the field main runs planting, we are working with an Australian Ag tech company. We have been also running our chaser bins with our 8400R's and 9620R's for the past 2 years fully autonomous...
I would say australian Agri tech companies and John Deere is the forward leader for farming technology.

As I watch more then a few farmers working in their tractors 🚜 I am starting to think 🤔 there would be not much farming that would get done with out a nice big MT DEW in the cab!!! Just what I did for many years. Safe and happy 😃 farming to all farmers this crop year. This country needs the food you grow more then ever now!! Get it done!!

The next step is the automatic reversing at the end of the field. And then without the operator... But I think a supervisor always needs!
Nice to see this operator actually knows how to set the guidance up to sow the headlands last- last spring when I suggested doing this to a well known you tuber from the us he seemed incapable of understanding this big advantage , he was concerned that if he did,nt finish the field before it rained he would damage the germinating headland plants if he had to wait several days for good enough conditions to finish planting the field, to my mind with the gps technology , planting headlands first makes about as much sense as trying to put the roof on a house before you build the walls :)

All of this just to grow corn? I thought all you were supposed to do was dig a hole, put a seed in, cover it up, add a little water and wait to pick it.
That certainly works in the garden for the first hundred seeds but as you put millions of seeds this is the way to go.

It does. I often find the row marker box units get more done because they just go back and forth. They never have to wait to acquire a signal or have computer sensors fail.
Amazing technology today. Back in my day I once planted almost 40 acres with our four row John Deere. LOL. Keep up the awesome work.
I grew up watching 4 and 6 row planters. My three closet neighbors had the following planters : 6 row Allis-Chalmers, 4 row IH Cyclo-Air and a 4 row Ford. It will be interesting to see how horse power and technology will continue to advance planting.
Amazing video of amazing technology ."Automagic" is what I call it. Is there a difference in the resulting crop between the two different brand planters, once the corn plants have grown? Of course supposing we compare generally similar settings for the planters. If you allow, a (very nitpicky) comment: The GDP satellites don't guide or steer the tractor, their job is to enable the computer to work out where the machine is. All routing and steering is done by the machine and its computers itself.
Quite amazing to not have major overlaps on fields that sharp angles on the headlands. Very impressive.
This field is a good example of those tough point rows as it boarders I-24 and a sharp angle. You can see how units cut off nicely on the turns.
I heard that the planter in this video runs by using gps as well as the tractor. I also saw the movable hitch for the planter. It looked like the movable part for the planter is right where the tractor drawbar and the planter meet. The man you were talking to said that the planter is guided by a strip in the field that I could actually see. What I didn’t hear is how the strips are put in the field. If it is a gps equipped tractor pulling a special new implement, wouldn’t that be a greater fuel expense?

Great video! How many acres do you need to plant every year to pay a setup like this?
You need to farm a few thousand acres to justify 2 planters that size and with that level of high-dollar tech, although a lot of the GPS stuff and some of the advanced planter features have gotten a little less expensive with more widespread adoption.
When the planter tractor(s) cost $400k and the planter(s) cost $125k or so, by the time you fill out the rest of the equipment fleet (other tractors, tillage tools, sprayers, nutrient applicators, combines, grain carts, trucks, etc) the total bill is well into 7 figures. You can't make that pay on a few hundred acres with any conventional cash crop...
with exactemerge that planter probably cost around 200k
What if you did not get done planting a field and you come back the next day. Will you line up with existing passes or would you be off? I sold a radio to a farmer the other day using a GPS base and he said I need to be a certain amount of inches off the anhydrous pass from days or weeks before. Will this system work like this using stand alone equipment without a GPS base or a GPS reference network. Does this make sense?
I am disappointed with the 8345R. 548 cubes cranking out 290 horsepower. I feel that there is too much faith put in turbos and intercoolers to get big horsepower. On an old John Deere 5020 its 531 cubic inches cranked out 133 horsepower. I guess I am old school but to me for big hp, the best is big cubic inches. No replacement for large displacement. I think the planter is real good, however if it were me I would always worry about losing GPS signal. In spite of what I may feel the guys who are working with all this are having a real good time workwise. As always thanks for showing.

Great video that shows how technology is becoming more and more integrated in many farming applications. Can you help with a description of the large boom directly in the center of the planter. I suspect it has something to do with the automation in the planter, any additional info is appreciated.
It's for filling the seed boxes.
That boom is an auger mounted on the planter to fill the seed commodity tanks. They did not fill the planter why I was there filming so I did not get to film the refill process.

At Kentucky Ag show is this same planter or different one that was hook up to classic JD tractor? It be interesting to compare old vs new tractors with planter.👍
The planter at Louisville was the 1745 8 row. I have a 30 minute detailed walk around interview on the 1745 on the way to the channel. The 1745 will not be on the market until 2021 but their is a 1745 on demo here in Kentucky this spring. My plan is to film it in the field.

I know that tractors and implements are expensive, but it must hurt to pay half a million dollars for a tractor and planter.
And that was a base price for the planter. I'd bet that with the options on this one it's 300,000

Are you talking about the small chains behind each row unit, that hang in a "u" when the planter is raised? Those just drag over the seedbed to smooth everything over in case any plant residue or clods end up right over the furrow.
But that guidance aint cheap
It is not. It is a big investment.
We use a 12row john Deere corn planter with a 8295R tractor in the tractor we have 6 or 7 screens

when was the field initially mapped
I just had a crazy thought: Just think how much easier it would have been to "check" corn with this technology, rather then having to move that wire each time you reach the end of the field.

We run an 8 row 40 3 pt planter and use gps for driving but we don’t have all of the technology on it, like the auto shutoff setup, but it does the job
Every bit of tech helps. What crops are you planting on 40 inches. I ran my IH 4786 on a 50ft harrow and drive a GPS guides 7210R on a 50ft harrow. What a difference auto guidance makes. I like your Darth Vader avatar.
@@bigtractorpower cotton is our only crop we do row crop of with wheat being our other crop. We don't have a lot of acres, only 500 or so total and half of that goes into cotton every year. I've tried talking my boss into upgrading the planter to have row shutoffs but we never have.
we currently run an 8235r and our biggest rig is a 32 footer but the gps definitely helps out with everything we do on the farm. That's our only big tractor with our others being a 4640 and 4440, both with loaders on the front.

How can the operator see and exactly follow the marker line that passes beneath the tractor? It looks like it would be difficult to see from the cab.

It's called driving by the seat of your pants. Pretend you are straddling thistle and your not wearing britches.Keep the thistle between your knees and don't let it touch you. Helps in curves,when it's straight you can line up the center of hood.

What are the disc between row 4and 5 , row 12 and 13. ?
Because this is strip till where the ground is turned over in 30 inch strips those blades ensure the planter can not wander off track and the seed is always going in the strip.
Broke my share of them. Remember cobbing them back together to try and finish.
