I don't think it's right to think of it as their "true selves", but rather their casual selves. Adrien is more shy and reserved because of expectations he faces from his father, but he also has a sadness that he hides as cat noir. His Adrian persona is part of who he is as well as Cat. The same can be said for Marinette. While she is clumsier as Marinette, she is still very similar to who she is in the Ladybug costume. She still is smart, quick thinking and confident (except around Adrien). She can also be playful both as Ladybug and Marinette, she is simply more professional as Ladybug since she needs to be on task. It would wrong to say that Ladybug isn't her true self either, since it is still her, but allows her confidence to shine since she isn't distracted.

Personally, I love Marichat as the characters tend to be their true self around each other without idolization (also I adore irony). Also I love this animatic! You did a lovely job! Weredad made a gateway for their relationship to get a bit known in public (even if it's only her parents), because if we actually analyze how known the ships are... Even if Chat did "reject" Mari, that doesn't scrap the potential these two have to develop their relationship into something more. The only barrier I see here is Mari having second thoughts if she did ever liked Chat coz of the whole Chat Blanc incident.
