I don't think it's right to think of it as their "true selves", but rather their casual selves. Adrien is more shy and reserved because of expectations he faces from his father, but he also has a sadness that he hides as cat noir. His Adrian persona is part of who he is as well as Cat. The same can be said for Marinette. While she is clumsier as Marinette, she is still very similar to who she is in the Ladybug costume. She still is smart, quick thinking and confident (except around Adrien). She can also be playful both as Ladybug and Marinette, she is simply more professional as Ladybug since she needs to be on task. It would wrong to say that Ladybug isn't her true self either, since it is still her, but allows her confidence to shine since she isn't distracted.

Despite people making the claim that all the ships are the same as the people within the ships are the same, I would like to point out that it is the dynamics that are shifted. Personally, I love Marichat as the characters tend to be their true self around each other without idolization (also I adore irony).

Yes they act different with the different ships obviously because they don’t know each other’s identities but don’t forget there still the same people and no matter which ship happens in the love square we should appreciate it cause our ship still happens
I hate how they killed Marichat in theshow! Like they have all the reasons to be toghether! ladrien is just two people idolizing eachother, Adrienette is "Just a firend" guy and madly in love girl. Where in Marichat u have two friends being their true selfs. When Mari meets Chat thats the only time they both have the oportunity to get to know eachother. And show was like. Nope have a Weredad ep ..... I am still sad about that...

It's because they opened a way for them to actually hangout.
In the end they were now stated as friends right?
They finally considered their relationship as friends (publicly and not just between their selves or just the two of them), leading their soon love story as "friends to lovers".
People said that this ship had the most potential to have character development, well they can't have that if Chat suddenly realized he loved her(Marinette) from day one, he needs to know her well first, then the feelings starts once we have that.
Weredad made a gateway for their relationship to get a bit known in public (even if it's only her parents), because if we actually analyze how known the ships are...
Ladynoir is very well known in the city since people see them almost everyday and even assumed they're a couple.
Ladrien is also a bit well known for in the episode Gorizilla, people saw them and cheered for Ladybug's successful saving.
Adrienette is just the same as Ladrien for they're both seen in the previous mentioned episode, plus the students know about them.
As u can see, Marichat is the ONLY ship that still isn't seen in the public eye(even if it did though, we still haven't seen them making a big deal out of it), making their relationship more private than the 3, weredad just gave it some audience to support what they have.
Even if Chat did "reject" Mari, that doesn't scrap the potential these two have to develop their relationship into something more.
The only barrier I see here is Mari having second thoughts if she did ever liked Chat coz of the whole Chat Blanc incident.

Marichat doesn’t have sappy or awkward moments. It’s just them too being their “ imperfect “ self’s. Plus if you look back at the show marinette and chat noir talk about their feelings openly which is something they struggle with. Plus the balcony scene with the bright moon in the background is just beautiful.

I _definitely_ saw this as him using some reverse psychology to test the waters with *Mari-* whilst maybe also still having some hesitance, since his love for *LB* is _still_ in the back of his mind.
Though, not only has he gotten to know a _truer side_ to *Mari,* while in his *Chat* persona, but he’s also gotten to see how much *LB* there _is_ in *Mari* _too._
The same can be said for *Mari* getting to know *Chat,* as well. Seeing his softer *Adrien* side and learning he’s _not_ just a big flirt, but he has _depth_ and _character._
