Did you know what is a "Levada"?..
The “Levadas” are unique irrigation systems built by our ancestors in the 16th century to distribute water from the north to the south. Currently, there is around 2500 km of Levadas in Madeira Island. They have provided irrigation to southern plantations of sugarcane, banana trees and vineyards in the past. Levadas, except for its primary function, are one of the best attractions of this wonderful island. Along with the levadas you can find special paths, which at the beginning were used by workers. These paths may lead you to spectacular, breathtaking views… Views that you will remember forever!
It seems to be the best opportunity for you to visit our greatest pride, the Laurissilva Forest, considered in 1999 by UNESCO a World Heritage Site, occupying approximately an area of 15,000 hectares, almost 20% of the island is covered by this unique and exhilarant forest.
