This pedal has distortion along with it. The intention was to have a synth/bass line going out (filtered below 800-ish Hz) to the DSP - instantly, bit-crushed distortion is heard... unadulterated volume ducking is what i expected :[ Turning down the value of he synth helped, but then that resulted in not the sound or color i wanted from the synth. if you wanted to turn of the pedal and reintroduce it later, the volume difference was too much when trying to get levels that did NOT distort. outside of this very specific intended use - this pedal is great, and can shine when you consider your gain staging and placement of this effect.

Jack Hartweg there's a compressor pedal or two out there with sidechain (Empress has one) but it's not very common, and this one adds features the Empress doesn't have (tap tempo, inverse) so it's pretty neat.
I'm starting to get bittersweet feelings about your demos... you make everything sound amazing, which only makes me feel worse when I try them myself and only come up with crap! :) You're a really talented composer, when is that album of yours coming out?
It would have been perfect if this pedal had a 'frequency' knob which let you control the cutoff frequency of the incoming signal. This way, if you have a drum beat, you can adjust the knob so that the sidechain only responds to the low frequencies below say 60 hz.
I use the Empress Compressor for sidechain compression. It's a great compressor that can be used normally or side-chained, and has a very useful string of metering lights up top. There's also the Opti-FET, which is very powerful (you can EQ your sidechain signal to only duck at certain frequencies) but they can be a bit harder to come by. This pedal, however, seems to be more specifically designed for ducking and has cool specific features like the "inverted" mode.
I'm wondering if you can use the 3.5 jack that the Igor uses, and (using the right cable, of course) run it into another external tap tempo that accepts the regular 1/4" jack. The Igor is so cool but not exactly practical in a pedalboard/live situation. Does anyone have any thoughts/answers for that?
How do you get that sweet, silky guitar tone from the tap tempo portion? Are you using any other pedals (maybe a reverb), or is is just the clean signal from a really nice amp?

Hey, welcome. This type of effect is called "side chaining." It's a type of compression. As far as I know this is the only pedal built specifically for this. The Pulsar by Electro Harmonix is a tremolo, and there are plenty of those out there. They actually sound kind of similar, the difference is that a side chain can be set up to react to an outside source (like a drum). Twin Stags is one of my favourite tremolo, Gravitas is great too. There are lots of good options (and many cheap ones) for tremolo. Good luck!
