How do you turn a simple idea into a fully developed 3-minute piece of music? How can you take a few notes and develop the motif into a structured composition? It's a problem that many composers face so Guy Michelmore comes to the rescue with lots of suggestions for ways to develop your orchestral ideas into fully-fledged pieces of music. Using Spitfire Audio's BBC Symphony Orchestra library with Spitfire Originals string libraries he creates a complete orchestral piece of music in just over one hour.

I know Guy tends to self deprecate but who else can agree this piece is absolutely beautiful? He's becoming one of my favorite composers and the fact he lets us in on his workflow is such a gift.

The biggest lesson for me was how Guy stays in "creating" mode throughout, and hardly ever goes back to fuss with a part. He starts with an overall plan and then just gets it all out on the table, jumping around the orchestra and recording what comes to him without much editing, always with the 3 minute goal in mind. I'm going to try this approach more, Instead of switching between "create" and "edit" modes. Every time I go back to perfect something prematurely, I'm going backwards in a sense. Forward motion, not perfection, is essential when the goal is to get to the end. Thanks Guy!
Perfectly sums up my thought process in producing and music making. Thank you, I too stay in editing mode far too much I should focus on the end goal in a creative sense rather than nitpick everything and second guess.
Yeah, I would have spent the 1st 20 mins adjusting the 1st sound and another 3 hours tweaking the rest lol.
I find this to be very hard when making deep electronic music that isn't so much about the notes, or even the chord progression, but about the ambience, and the sounds.... I can tweak a kickdrum for hours and get nowehere ;)
Thats actually huge, going back to edit can take hours without you even realizing it.

I watched this with my 3-year old daughter, and immediately after we reached the end she applauded the performance. Then, a few moments later, she was humming her own melody line. Guy is an inspiration to us all! =)
And then she broke out the staff paper and wrote her first symphony!

Hi Guy. I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love your videos but never act on them. I write progressive rock. But this video stirred me into action. I have the free BBC Symphony Orchestra so loaded it up and away I went. I surprised myself. I finished a three minute piece and the following day I heard a good friend of mine had been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and was not long for this world. He is a great supporter of prog bands and I wanted to write a song for him to let him know he was in our thoughts. I decided to use this 3 minute piece but extended it in true prog fashion to 11 minutes. Our drummer in Texas sent me his parts, our guitarist in the UK sent his and our sax player who just so happens to be the sax and keyboard player in Camel.....don't ask....long story...added his. I live in Lanzarote by the way. I mixed it to demo standard. We did all this in 4 days. We sent it to his partner who managed to play it to him last Friday morning. We also made it available to download and made 300quid for his living expenses. Sadly he died on the following Tuesday. All the comments about the song centered on how beautiful the first part was and that my friend is down to you. This was only the second orchestral track I had ever written and I'm getting on a bit now and you inspired that. So thank you. I'm glad I did it and I'm glad my friend got to hear Song For Spike (Is It relayer?)

@@ThinkSpaceEducation You work very fast, Guy. If I were to compose a 3min piece of music it would probably take me a couple of days, and the results are far from yours (I mean your results are way better)! Hope you don't mind me asking, how did you work so fast?
@@BaraMatahariPagi It is his experience of decades of writing and composing music for films. I think he works for over 30years in the business, so he has a lot of experience.
@@BaraMatahariPagi At my work I can laboriously explain to someone all the intricacies of how to brew good coffee but this doesn't mean the person I'm training will be able to brew good coffee. I've found the best way of learning a craft is to do it in high volume and reflect after each attempt in order to improve the next time. Unless you're composing for a client the quality of your art shouldn't matter if you're aim is to learn.

Yet another reminder to NOT get stuck in the "blank screen syndrome" waiting forever to think of some award-winning theme (that never comes!) and instead, just put something down...anything!! You've shown yet again that even a few notes can be transformed into a wonderful 3 minute piece of music! THank you!

I've always had motifs floating about in my head and not been able to expand on them. Thank you so much for this video. It gives me the inspiration and confidence to do just that.
I found it very interesting when you said that you were bereft when you didn't have a picture or video to help you score.
Conversely, I always compose first and then find video clips and edit them to match the timing, tone, and theme of my music. The process is anything but easy and I might have to listen to my own music several dozens of times as I arrange and rearrange the order of the video clips before completing a project.
Therefore, I will make the effort to create the video first as an experiment to determine if I can compose the music to fit it rather than vice versa. Thanks, Guy, for your many thoughtful and informative videos over the years!

@@PytoX I second that, I have the Spitfire Harp and if you are looking for a standalone with a lot of effects and glissando options the Spitfire one is very good, current at a 149 Euros.
Thank you for sharing your workflow. There's so much experience shared in this video! I've been composing with trackers/MIDI all my life from back in the Commodore days. I use Reaper now, all your lessons can easily be applied to any DAW. My reactions to this video were a lot of "oh I need to start doing that more!" I need to speed up my work.

This was inspiring! I'm that kind of person, who instantly hears melody and how it's supposed to go on from a point, but I never get a full project running... but I should try it again sometimes!

I just stumbled on this video and though I've only watched a few parts of it so far, it's really helpful. Honestly, my favorite part about this is that for some reason I didn't even like the sound of the original motif very much, but the finished product sounds amazing!
Thank you for that! I have three or four orchestral score starts in my Cubase folder waiting for a treatment like what you just showed us. I finished one in my queue this week but it took a long time. This process may help me accelerate finishing more of them. (The main thing I need to learn now is how to use percussion because I’m one awful son of a drummer at it.) Thanks again for sharing!

Diddled back to Harry Potter before the main Jurassic Park, then tapering into Western period drama out in the plains where they of course all lived happily ever after. Paul McCartney was asked once; "where do you find ideas?" ... He said; "it's a bit like beachcombing. You turn over many rocks until you find something interesting".
Personally I find to many crabs, but occasionally a beautiful starfish will appear.
Composer excellence on display! But in addition a great showcase of what you can achieve with Spitfire BBC and a few additions. The theme worked well, and the composition ended up quite touching too. Ahh, just wonderful in all dimensions!
I don't know much about music theory or even making music that would sound good to anyone, but this was a very relaxing and enjoyable way to spend 35 minutes. Subscribed.
