A great thing about epithet erased is that the quality of the show gets better and better as it goes on. In a big budget produced series, episodes are made in a way that any problems regarding style or animation aren’t fixed until a potential follow up season, or they don’t improve that much. Every episode of epithet erased so far seems to get better and better visually as it goes on, characters have more expressions, the top down views have more effects and animations, more unique and changing backgrounds, etc. Episode 4 is when this all comes together perfectly in a way that I feel perfects the style, being but limited yet incredibly active and visually great. So I’d say keep watching, it gets even better.
donald kingsbury So kind of like with Red vs. Blue? Before the remaster of the first seasons you can clearly see the “camera” was someone playing Halo 1 in first person.
A fun little explanation about this show: it's based on an online tabletop RPG JelloApocalypse played with his friends a couple of years ago called "Anime Campaign". That's why all the characters narrate their own actions, why there's an overhead display (exactly like the website they played on), and why there's other RPG stuff. Here's a fan animation from a minute of their Twitch-streamed campaign (the police lady with the Canadian dollar appears in the show, as does pretty much every other character you'll see in the show): th-cam.com/video/Lam6ZA4I86k/w-d-xo.html
Yes! Thank you for reacting to Epithet Erased! I watched the first 2 episodes and I’ve fallen in love with this series! It’s great and Jelloapocalypse released the second episode on their channel so you can go react to that episode as well!
Giovanni is legitimately my favorite character in n this series, I love him to death 🤣 I'm glad to see people reacting to the show, it's really unique and something not seen often, the first time I watched I was a tad bit skeptical but as you go on you just slowly start falling in love with the show and its characters and you find its "animation" to be rather fun and enjoyable, I don't mind its methods at all and am rather happy to see something different yet still very entertaining :)
I remember reading on TV Tropes that apparently Jello apocalypse describe this as "My Hero Academia meets Home Alone, but way stupider" which amused me. Might have paraphrased. I also read that apparently this is actually based off of a tabletop RPG he actually created himself
4:45 That line was verbalized out loud. ☺ Jello was the GM for a RPG tabletop session called Anime Campaign, and this show is basically an adaptation of that. The show utilizes the roll20 format, which is why the map segments are there. I think they are a really good way to see more of the room, and they are done very well in later episodes and especially in the fight scenes. Jello wrote the whole show, directed the VA's; he was responsible for pretty much everything. The only thing he didn't have a hand in was the soundtrack. He was also the voice of Ben. 😊 Do NOT drop this. Watch the whole thing; it gets SO much better with every episode.
Oh my gosh, I'm so glad that you're reacting to Epithet Erased! It's something I've followed through development for a while, so I do hope that you keep watching it! You're right, the show's animation style is experimental and very different, but I did like your analysis a lot! Jello (who is the show creator) has said that he would have really liked to have all of those bells and whistles from traditional animation. (Such as those blinking animations and keyframes, like you mentioned!) But as this entire thing has been a /very/ costly passion project for him with thousands of dollars already sunken into it, I do think what we have visually is still great! Of course, this doesn't detract from your points at all in the video! I do definitely agree that it could be even greater! Contextually though, it sadly wouldn't be realistic. I will say though, that for a show that has sprite animation, I'm astounded by the effort put into them by the cast. Not only does the art look great, but there's actually a lot of different sprites in this show. I'm very used to media with sprites in it recycling the same five (with maybe slight variations to the faces) but they very much have a ton more that they use for special scenes and circumstances. And they're full body ones!! Epithet Erased is a very uniquely told show medium wise. While it's minimalistic though, you can tell a lot of care is put into anywhere they could. The backgrounds are gorgeous, the sound design/music has a lot of care to be catchy, and the voice acting is especially well-casted and chosen. (Which I'm so happy you caught!) They cast people who turn in astonishing performances that carry through, even in the limited animation. The story you'll find going through, is a primarily character driven one. Jello takes a lot of care for foreshadowing certain elements, but I think what you'll find is that the meat of the story is the characters and their relationships with one another. You mention "My Hero Academia" which isn't a bad assessment in setting, but you'll be happy to know that the world itself doesn't cater to those same exact rules. Thank you again for watching it, and I just hope that you can get a chance to enjoy it like I do! There are many more fun characters down the road to look forward to, and it even gets pretty heartfelt down the road! We only get seven episodes of it, so I'm hoping to enjoy every little bit of it! Just by making this video though, thank you for spreading a little Epithet Erased love around! You're the best, love ya!
I'm glad that this series is getting more and more popular. I'm always glad to see those who put in a lot of hard work into a unique story idea get recognition. I watch episode 2 and 3, and I feel like you're going to love this series
Woo!! I was really hoping you'd watch this! I've watched all the episodes already and it's fantastic. I'm so attached to all of the characters already.
Epithet Erased? AWWW YEAH! Just discovered this series and am loving it, glad to see you react to it. I'd recommend watching each video to the end, there are some different lines in the ending said and a cute Molly message at the end of each one.
Just gonna say, they're actually very good about the external/internal monologue thing. The mouth's only open if the character is actually talking. Molly's surprised expression without the mouth open is just kinda like 8
I really hope you keep watching this, at least through episode 3. The style takes a moment to get used to, but the comedy and story is much better than it has any right to be
I'm so happy to see people doing reactions to this series, it deserves all the attention it can get! I would also recommend watching the rest of these episodes with subtitles on, Jello does some fun stuff with them occasionally
...Huh. This is better than I expected. Full disclosure, tried watching the first episode before and stopped less than a minute in on account of the lack of animation and a little impatience on my part due to outside responsibilities. Thanks Zamber, I'm glad I got another chance to look at it.
i recall not being sure about it when i first heard about "a cartoon made in the style of youtuber animated profile reactions" but it seems so interesting
In case you didn't know, this show was a kinda out of no where pitch from jello to vrv and it was also hell to produce as jello had no team at the time and had to sort that at first. If the show was fully animated, it would of been a far worse hell to produce for him then it already was. Also yes, some of the story was an actual dnd campaign.
I am not sure if anyone else has brought this up, but epithet erased is based off a custom campaign that jelloapocalypse used to be the game master for. All the characters were in that campaign, and since the origin is based off a tabletop roleplaying game similar to dungeons and dragons, the animation and narration are an homage to that
The reason for the grid and the reason for character narroration is because it was an ttrpg(table top rpg) called anime campaign which was also made by jello
There are Seven Episodes out now - the First Season is completet. More will come. They already have Story for up to 5 Seasons, but how much of that will become real depends entirely on the available Money.
Finally, a reaction channel that is constantly adding something new to the episode with commentary and thoughts. A channel that makes you want to watch the reactor over the thing they’re reacting to.
Another thing. They do have some fully animated moments but they try to keep it simple probably since the episodes are long and it would be a very long pain in the butt to have to animate all that. It also, at least for me, causes me to cherish to fully animated moments since there’s not a ton of them. Over all it’s likely just to save time so they can produce and they likely add animation here and there to highlight those moments. Edit: Grammar at the end.
About the whole internal dialogue vs external dialogue thing: All of the videos come with closed captions, and usually the narration parts are done in brackets. Just thought I’d clear that up.
I'm not sure if someone is already made this comment yet, but I still want to do it just in case. This series was actually adapted from a tabletop RPG that the creator of this Series held before last year. A lot of the characters in the overall World concept is similar, but a lot of things have changed. I like how they were still able to implement the aspects or the overall feel of a tabletop RPG for the entire series. I'm not sure if you were going to continue watching this Zamber, but I have to say I am currently at episode 6 and I am loving all of it.
this is actually based off of a sort of anime dnd thing that the creator did with his friends, he also pitched it as a joke and only ended up having around two months and his own money to make the whole thing when verv said yes, which is why the style is less animated and more visual novel like
Glad to see you reacting to this!! ok, but i view the whole narration as if somebody is playing a campaign of dnd, in which the "player" need to narrate the action, inner monologue and dialogue, idk if that helps, hope to see you reacting to the next ep
YEEEE! Also the narration is because it is partly based off of 'Anime Campaign' that I mentioned before. The top down parts are directly based off of how they played and most of, if not all the characters that show up (except maybe the kids in the field trip) were characters from 'Anime Campaign'. So not a book, DnD. The intro and certain scenes that will happen in the show are going to be fully animated by Studio Madhouse, but the rest will be done in the style of the 'So This is Basically' series
Just five minutes in and I'm already surprised ya can find so much to say. Ya plan on watching the other episodes? I watched to episode 4 and been loving it and will be interesting to see what ya think despite not finishing this video yet lol

There’s a saying. “There are many ways to tell a story.” Not all shows needs to be animated in order to tell a story.
That's a good saying that I never heard of
Ikr it'd lose its charm if it were fully animated.

It’s got that DnD kinda vibe

As far as I know, this is a motion comic based off Anime Campaign, a RPG podcast Jello was a part of. Hence, the unusual format.
Also, it's adorable.
