    the key to being a good counter puncher is not to focus on making him miss. it's about making them throw when and what you want them to throw. it's all about false openings.

      Mayweather actually thinks and lures opponents to break rythm, throw punches, become aggresive, etc. He studies them, he sometimes builds his whole thing in the first rounds, waiting for the oponent to get used to some counters, only to catch them later and counter their counter. That is thinking.Training in box for muscle memory is necessary regardless you are a counterpuncher or not.

      Tru but all u have to do is faint the jab so he can throw his jab .. If this guy throws that right over the top shoulder roll with distance I can counter with my right hand bc he drops his left ..

    Everyone's talking about how can you easily get hit when you slip but remember these are deception tactics, you're not going to slip every time, obviously you will get hit. You're supposed to do this when the opponent doesn't expect it.

      Got Game, I agree with you! TIMING is related to each specific individual and that timing is unique to each person, timing is essential in developing counter punching ability. Its a blend of timing, savvy and courage! The most a coach should do in my opinion is teach the fundamental boxing, the essential techniques Parry's, Stop Blows, Bobs and Weave, Rolls, Slips. And all of those techniques are tweaked through thousands of partner repetition drills, then through tap sparring first a fighter will begin to learn the subtle nuances of drawing an opponent and countering effectively.

      Giselle X Could be he sounds like he knows his stuff, I'd like to see how he works a corner before I say he needs top fighters. Many young trainers arent experienced enough to work the corners in actual pro fights, I seen some guys (Trainers) crack in the heat of the moment when things went sour in an amateur fight & pro ones aswell, wont throw anyone under the bus because were cool tho Lol, but they serious F%#$ up!

    • @SluggaSlamoo
      @SluggaSlamoo 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Giselle X Not really, most boxers know this stuff. Maybe he goes a little deeper than mid level amateurs. Pro trainers can go much much deeper than this. They could write an entire essay about something even very specific, rather than some over-arching concept such as counters. For example, Bernard Hopkins can talk for hours on not only feints, but a single type of feint.

    • @SluggaSlamoo
      @SluggaSlamoo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @boonvang708

    But if you "step" into the shot as demonstrated in your 1st technique wouldn't that actually set you up in a position where your opponent could strike you with his right hand? Because it looks like a slip to the inside and then punch, Which in itself is actually pretty dangerous unless you are extremely fast, because IF you miss...you WILL get that right hand! Am I not right?

    • @luftwaffle96
      @luftwaffle96 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wouldn't you have to really suck to miss that up close, though?

    • @chrisXDfull
      @chrisXDfull 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      luftwaffle96 no, if you keep doing it a few times the opponent will catch on and they'll be expecting that punch. Machida uses that exact punch in all his fights and shogun just waited for him to throw it.

    • @bayboxer666
      @bayboxer666 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are supposed to slip a punch moving towards your opponents body so that you aren't in range for the next shot, that would be "pulling back" which is a big no no. You are slipping a straight punch putting yourself in close range to land an uppercut or hook

    I believe that all forms of competition are connected to each other psychologically. Different sports are just different types of activity, but the mental aspect of them remains the same. It's about dealing with competition, taking responsibility for losses, keep improving, self-discipline, practicing fundamentals etc. etc. If you have been busy competing since a young age and have an ego to win, I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to switch to boxing later in life and be successful in it. The most important factor no matter what sport is having a competitive nature, having the desire to win, hating to lose and the rest will follow by itself.

    i can see a lot of the haters in the commets i think most of them forget that the first counter is extremly effective and ive done it in fights rocking my opponent and never being caught with a counter but the key word to doing that is "timing", this kind of counter should only be use in special situations or when you can really feel the punch wich comes with experience

    the information in this video is valid imo. It's just not very well broken down into the various types of countering with beginner clarity but he did cover them actually.
    you can counter off: timing shots, blocking shots, you can set up a counter by engaging (clean up left hook is an example of a punch that kinda works as a bail out counter shot off a 2 by itself), slipping/angles
    I personally only timed jabs, nothing else. most of my counters are mostly engaged from my attack or off slips. That's what I liked.

  • @zeekeephriamiteisraelite7951
    @zeekeephriamiteisraelite7951 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In my humble opinion I feel the jab will beat the right so I would rather throw my right after defending and catching them on the lazy return of the jab. The lead had will land first because looking at it logically it's closer to the target than a rear hand.

    Very Good video. I personally feel that there are many many poor videos on countering out there. I think the counter jab is the most important punch in boxing and there is too much emphasis on trying to slip punches and not enough on countering punches. If you focus on countering a jab for example your natural head movement will slip the punch. The only difference is you are hitting back quickly and purposefully while taking away his rythym while setting up your rythym. An excellent counter jab can set up your attack and keep you in positions where you won't get jabbed cleanly which seems very basic, but it can really be effective. At the pro level I have seen boxers like Segei Kovolev, GGG, and Andre Ward all win crucial rounds in fights with a great counter jab. I recommend analyzing GGG's counter jab. Look at round 1 and 2 of his fight against David lemieux. He just jabbed and counter jabbed him for 2 rounds and mentally lemieux was finished.

      yes but ive done it and rocked the guy in my first amateur, it takes some practice but when you feel he is gonna throw the jab you almost throw your right inmediatly like a instinc and rockhim, i send the guy flying through the ropes but if you dont feel this counter then you shouldnt throw it because your opponents right can probably catch you

    Boxing is the easiest sport alive.. He's right about the timing that can offset your opponent moves make them hesitate to throw a jab.

      Scooby Doo sounds cool. there's a big difference between thinking you know something in theory and actually putting into practice against top level opposition

    Bulshit, nothing technically right, throwing overhand without changing your place, it is not counter punching, you will eat that jab before you can connect to him and he is teaching boxing

    • @hilalsharifli7994
      @hilalsharifli7994 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don Hicky reach will matter if you will counter punch with jab. With right hand over hand you should have at least twice longer reach than your opponent, it is unreal
