  • This quick lesson is in response to several emails I’ve received about whether or not you can use muriatic acid in an above ground pool. I also address The general use of chemicals in an above ground pool.

      You need to test your pool water and see what the pH is if it’s high start with 1 quart of muriatic acid added to your pool with the pump running to help distribute the acid wait an hour or two and test the pH again if it’s still high repeat the process until you get the level down. Unless the pool supply store person knew how high your pH was I think it was irresponsible for them to tell you to dump an entire gallon of acid in the pool.

    thanks very informative. I am a pool beginner. I have an above ground pool. When I add granulated chemicals to the pool, I first dissolve them in a +/- 3 gallon pail of pool water and then add them. Is that the best way to do it, or should I not add granulated chemicals at all. I only use liguid chlorine.

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pete Heiser liquid chlorine is better over all but in Arizona it evaporates too quickly so most pools use tablets in a tablet floater to allow for slower evaporation. Good idea with pre dissolving the granules.

    Should I take chlorine tabs out before using the acid? And how long do I wait to add anything else or get in?
    Great video by the way

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  ปีที่แล้ว

      No you don't need to since, as per my video, you're only adding 1qt at a time. Also, if your pol is at least 3000 gallons you should be able to swim shortly after adding the acid (if you want peace of mind you can wait an hour while running the pump motor).

    What is the best way to get rid of a rather large build up of calcium settled on the bottom of my above ground vinyl pool?

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would probably suggest vacuuming it out, and if that doesn’t work, you might have to drain and refill the pool. I do have a question for you, do you have very hard water in your area? Or are you using something like calcium hypochlorite to sanitize your water?

      @@PoolSchooler Thank you for the reply! We have been using Clorox shock xtrablue and HTH Shock Advanced. We were using a different kind a few years ago when we had a pool last, and had no issues, but I can’t remember what it was. Our well water is typically very hard, but we had a company fill the pool. Any suggestions?

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@hayleymoomaw8673 OK that’s helpful to know that. I would honestly stop using shock because most shock has minerals in it like calcium as a binder. Instead of using shock try using liquid chlorine it’s more pure. It gets into your pool water quicker and it doesn’t contain calcium.

    Hopefully you see this comment I know this was long ago I have a 20x48 bestway soft wall pool my ph is showing 7.8 but my total alkalinity is showing 240?! Very new to having a pool and I was using the Clorox test strips I’ve heard stories I’m not sure if they are very accurate but I have tested it three times the alkalinity has gotten up to 240 I bought a box of muriatic acid from Walmart the Kemtech brand it’s 2 gallon jugs my pool holds 8,060 gallons any advice on how much I should add also should I basically be wearing a hazmat suit lol safety precautions? I would also like to note that it says I have zero chlorine and zero total chlorine and that is testing two different methods any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would suggest using dry pool acid to lower the alkalinity. Typically liquid muriatic acid has a greater affect on lowering the pH rather than the alkalinity. If you do an online search Leslie‘s pool supplies carries a dry pool acid. For a pool that size I would start with a pound of the dry pool acid making sure to keep the pump motor running for several hours while doing so in order to help distribute the chemical. Also broadcasted around the perimeter of the pool don’t just dump the whole pound in one spot. The dry pool acid should bring the alkalinity down. Once you’ve let that 1st pound mix around in the pool for two hours or so test the water and repeat as needed. Making sure to always keep the pool filter pump motor running during him for several hours after to help distribute chemical

    How long do i wait to shock after adding acid

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can add the acid immediately after. As long as you don't mix them together in, say, a bucket. That would be VERY DANGEROUS

    • @PoolSchooler
      @PoolSchooler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s necessary to lower the ph of the pool. Just don’t add more than a quart at a time and run the filter pump for a couple hours after you do it.
