I've often wondered what the Abbey looked like complete, and so big up there on the hill! I visited 2013; it started raining and I only made it up to the bottom of the steps as I was too wet to go any further. My one photo just shows the top of the remains ⛪
Very impressive. The synod at Whitby (664) was the clash between two types of Christianity. Eastern Mediterranean, which had arrived at Ireland, Southern Scotland, Northumberland. And Roman Catholicism, which arrived at Canterbury Augustine (597) The Name of the Rose opening sequence, gives one a flavour of what it might have been like.
