  • In this video, I explain why Major League baseball does not need a salary cap, and how baseball stars like Bryce Harper and Mike Trout don't have as much of an effect on their team as they would in other sports.

    Does baseball need a salary cap? Why or why not? And also to everyone complaining that I didn’t talk about the NHL, it’s because I don’t know that much about the NHL, and I didn’t want to sound like I did and say something false.

      Kinda disagree because I'm a rays fan and our owner basically spends as less as he can and we have no shot cause as soon as big star player contract is about to expire we trade them same for marlins if we have a larger salary cap to keep it in higher millions but we can add a option for teams to offer above maximum to stay but you have to force owners to spend max or close to max so they don't keep rest to themselves it gets annoying to see our teams basically become quaddrouole a

      I second that. What the Pirates need is a consortium/ownership group with deep pockets and more than anything, truly committed to winning it all. Pittsburgh has recovered (somewhat) economically from the collapse of the steel industry of the 1980's (around the same time the Pirates almost left) and I think they could take a page from the book of how the Red Sox became a perennial power. At least the Pirates have a crown jewel of a ballpark. Now to build a team worthy of PNC Park.

    You only say this because the Angels have one of the highest payrolls
    I’m a twins fan I see the struggle
    The worst payrolls are
    Cincinnati
    Minnesota
    Milwaukee
    Tampa
    Oakland
    St. Louis
    KC
    Seattle
    San Diego
    All of these teams struggle regularly bar the Cards
    Meanwhile the Yankees in the 2010’s were the first time since ruth that they didn’t make the World Series
    2019 playoffs had 3 AL small teams and they won 1 Alds game combined the NL had the cards who are essentially the spurs/Pats of the MLB they are the only exception
    It’s hard to watch 4 years of 100+ losses just to finally have 162 watchable ones and when you finnally make the playoffs be destroyed by NYY after 3 games
    Giancarlo earns about as much as the starting lineup for the twins
    That is something that small market fans have to deal with and it kills the cities interest in the sport
    We’ve had 2 playoff games in a decade and it’s finally taken its toll
    But the MLB doesn’t care about small market teams much like you

  • @tim2013
    @tim2013 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Yes, it needs a cap, but it also needs a salary floor, so teams can't decide to spend $60M and hope to get lucky. The salary cap in basketball doesn't work because there are too many exceptions. The salary cap in football WORKS. There's no comparable position to quarterback in baseball, and that's why the Patriots are there every year. But in football you're good or bad based on merit, not on how much you spend.

  • @seggyjake34
    @seggyjake34 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Baseball needs the salary cap but it will never happen due to the lack of revenue sharing and likeliness that it causes another player strike. The difference between WS teams like the 15 Royals and 16 Cubs is that the Royals could never afford to keep that team together whereas the Cubs can and could create a potential dynasty. It’s unlikely a team like the Rays or Royals will ever have a dynasty because other teams can always pay more for their players.

    • @UglyFatNerd
      @UglyFatNerd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Grant Henderson
      It has a luxury tax. It doesn't work. The Yankees have been over the tax threshold for 15 years because the tax isn't enough to dissuade big market teams from going over the way it does small market teams. Dodgers have been over 4 years in a row and only owe $36 million. Chump change for the most expensive team in the league

    • @WishGR4NTed
      @WishGR4NTed 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fat Rugged Stacks yea and look at how many years the Yankees have been competitive the last 15 years. They always go buy old proven players that have no future. They just started drafting players Judge Gardner etc to make them competitive. The thing with no cap is once a team gets on top, another team can dethrone them easier by spending more. Perfect example is the patriots. Takes a lot of luck, aka eagles, I mean the mvp gets hurt and they still won the Super Bowl, to dethrone them. In baseball a team can just buy a few hitters and some pitchers and dethrone whatever dynasty exists, if you want pay the luxury tax that is. Perfect system.

    • @WishGR4NTed
      @WishGR4NTed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Perfect example is the astros just bounced into existence the last couple of years because the team decided to spend some money and buy some pitchers. Now look, a new contender. That’s good for sports in my opinion.

    • @UglyFatNerd
      @UglyFatNerd 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Grant Henderson
      You can continue to say that a team can beat them by spending more but look at the differences in the amount of money each team makes. Yankees make over $4 billion each season while the Rays are making $900 million in the same time. Proof the luxury tax does not work is that the Yankees have been over for 15 straight seasons, finally deciding to cut their spending. Small market teams are at a huge disadvantage because they make far less money and there's no limit to how much each team can spend every season. There's a difference between buying a few players to beat the next team that season and having the money to keep a dynasty. Only a few teams have the money to keep one going while others are forced to sell their franchise players season after season, and that's because there's no hard cap.

    • @WishGR4NTed
      @WishGR4NTed 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fat Rugged Stacks alright man all I can say is watch the video. It makes sense. Look at the last few champions. Baseball constantly has new teams popping up, and it’s still possible for teams to compete and not have to pay luxury tax. Braves, Phillies, Brewers, Cubs, Astro’s.

    This rightwing pro-business American idea appears to be coming to European football (the real kind, known as "fútbol" in some parts of the world), when you look at revenues generated per match of all the football leagues in the world, the MLS ranks 8th which is remarkable.
    But when you look at average player value on Transfer Market, it ranks 12th behind leagues like Russia, Belgium and Austria, which makes sense seeing the MLS is seen as a joke and they're clearly not spending that money on their players.

  • @louisauto2071

    Nah MLB doesn't need a salary cap. Teams who pay a single player $500 million are essentially throwing their money away. It's pretty obvious that baseball teams don't thrive off one guy making bank with a bunch of mediocre players who don't contribute. The 2010 Giants are a pretty good example of a bunch of misfits who got lucky without a player making a substantial amount more than the rest of the team.

      The NBA’s soft cap is no different from the MLB’s luxury tax. For example, as you know, teams have a limited amount they can spend with a salary cap. With a soft cap, teams can go over that salary cap limit, but will have to pay a luxury tax. In the MLB, there’s a certain amount of money u can spend before having to pay a luxury tax. It’s the same thing

    I’d hardly say that salary caps fail in all leagues. While the NBA has pretty much failed, I don’t think I would say that the NFL or the NHL has. Sure, the patriots have been contenders for so long, but the last five Super Bowl winners are the Eagles, Patriots, Broncos, Patriots, Seahawks. Only one team repeats, which isn’t bad. Who knows, maybe the Cubs or Astros will win another World Series in the next five years even without the salary cap. Then, the NHL. While the Stanley Cups winners in the last 10 years don’t vary much, with Chicago, Pittsburgh, and LA winning most of them. But, look at the teams that have made it and lost in the last 5 years: Vegas, Nashville, San Jose, Tampa Bay, and New York. I wouldn’t consider any of those teams big market teams, aside from New York. The salary cap’s goal was to help small market teams stay competitive and offer a level playing field, which it has done a decent job at doing. I don’t think they should have it in the MLB, but it isn’t useless

    also to point out as well... you mentioned 'dynasty teams' in other sports. Players want to play for the patriots, the steelers, etc.. so if they want to win they'll sign for a little less, or work out a deal that's softer on the cap in order to play for them. Few players want to play for the Browns.. the Pirates..

    Makes a lot of sense, it is the owner who agree to pay 30 million dollars to a player of 40 years. So I loved your explanation, I was one thought that salary cap could improve teams, but actually that limits the liberty of the owners to make their own decision with their money. great video.

    Yes it’s true that there’s been diversity in the World Series, yet in the playoffs, it’s been relatively stagnant. You know the Yankees, Dodgers, Cubs have legit playoff potential. If they flop for any reason, it’s much easier for them to dip into free agency to right the ship. If, say, the Reds went for a deep playoff run and flopped, now they HAVE to spend a few years rebuilding because they can’t compete for top tier talent unless it’s from within the system. A competitive salary cap and increased revenue sharing would create more teams trying to be competitive, and free agents wouldn’t be getting shrinking salaries, which will only increase now after the past FA crisis

    Salary caps don't necessarily fail in other leagues, it's just the nature of each sport. Baseball is the one sport that is truly a team game. Having the best player in the league on a certain team isn't a guarantee for success like it is in football and basketball. The Angels have sucked for almost the entire decade despite having Mike Trout. And look at the Rangers when they had Alex Rodriguez.

    The reason why we need a salary cap is because if your baseball team is a small market team then u know how much of a struggle when u can’t afford any of ur pieces that were good. U just lose them to the yankee/Red Sox or other team. Teams like the royals win a championship every 30 because we can keep all of our good pieces

    So the World Series is the Red Sox (#1 payroll) vs the Dodgers (#3 payroll). Not saying that large market/big payroll = World Series every year, but it’s definitely a HUGE advantage. The Dodgers were able to add Manny Machado after their SS went down for the season, where a small market team would not have had the financial resources to do something like that.

    Statistically speaking, if you’re out of the top 7 spots in MLB payroll you have a slim chance of actually winning it. It happens, but it’s rare. Baseball absolutely needs a salary cap OR a HARD luxury tax….AND a floor. Leave it as it is and there won’t be the rest of the league to complete with the handful of large market clubs with a fuckton of money.

    People only focus on how big market teams r always successful. A salary cap will help smaller market teams a lot and hurt big market teams

  • @Twopawn20
    @Twopawn20 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Maybe a salary floor? I’m just sad that my Pirates will never really be competitive because the market is small and our owner is greedy. With other sports at least everyone is on a somewhat equal playing field. In the MLB it is difficult to win anything without being a huge city with a large budget.

    If u put in a salary cap, it helps small market teams and hurts big market teams. U don’t put in a salary cap, it helps big market teams and hurts small market teams so it doesn’t all the sudden balance things out

    It wouldn’t work with the minor league system. Would the cap be on all the players in the minors and majors? Would it just be the majors? How does it work with players going up and down?

    I don't think individual people should have a salary cap, but teams should have caps so that teams like New York or Los Angeles can't just throw more money at everything because they make more from their region

  • @manuelcerda8889
    @manuelcerda8889 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would agree that a salary cap won't work as the idea of it should work. I am for player contract year limits, as in the NBA, they have up to 4-5 year limits. That way, a team isn't forced into signing a player for 10 years just because the player wants a 10 year deal. Also, it could keep players motivated for another deal in the future.

    Baseball does indeed need a salary cap. The 5 teams you mentioned who won the world series? Hell, going back to 2009? Every single one of them were top 10 in payroll in their respective seasons besides the 2015 Royals (13). If you go top 15 to be upper half of baseball, only one team in the last 25 years did it with a payroll below 15th, which was the 2003 Marlins. Baseball is a game that lends itself to parity by design, but there's obvious favoritism toward teams who play in bigger markets and have larger payrolls to work with.

    • @DawsonWright
      @DawsonWright  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably because they added pieces at the deadline. Just because a team has a top 10 payroll doesn’t mean they’re the Yankees

    Well as an A's fan I do see the league as unfair. The A's have had among the lowest payrolls in baseball for this entire millenium and as a result, once their players which they are so smart to pick up through drafting and raising in the farm system and minor leaguers they got in trades who grow into their own in the majors are suddenly great players, they just let them go. The A's seem like they have become the Minor League team of all the other Major League teams because they can't afford to keep their best players. It's so frustrating and I do believe if a Salary Cap did exist, they'd be able to keep some of their players as a result of there being a spending limit for all Major League teams.

    Baseball should have a salary cap. It's the only major team sport that doesn't have one. The Yankees and the Red Sox sign most all the big-name players and there needs to be something that can curtail that.

    Yes they need a salary cap. Patriots as an example was a bad example because many players took massive pay cuts to keep the team together instead of making millions more elsewhere. Teams like the pirates, Tampa bay ect who can’t afford bigger names players have no chance. Pirates haven’t been relevant since the 70’s for example

  • @brendan594

    Maybe instead of a salary cap baseball could cap the number of of years on player contracts. So instead of a 10 year $300 million dollar contract. Maybe cap the maximum amount of years on a contract to 5 or 6. Then the teams that pay those $300 million dollar contracts could get out of them quicker.

    i think for the fans sake they should bec a team can spend way too much on a bust leaving them in the dust for a decade.... the 2018 nyy have a 600 k judge and a 30 million stanton.... if he can't perform you waste 300 mill that u can keep to pay torres in 5 years... as a nyy fan they should..... NOT for the players or owners but for the sake of a team that if this dude busts u can rebuild within 2 years instead of 5 or 6
