Iron Leaves is Here, and it’s NOT GREAT. What Happened?

  • Pokemon Competitive Singles now has access to Paradox Virizion, also known as Iron Leaves, and it has joined Iron Jugulis and Iron Thorns in the Underwhelming Robots Society. I eagerly await the day that this Pokemon Leaves OU. It doesn't even have Leaves, it's made of Metal, it's an unnatural being. This is an outrage.

My Outro is a remix made by me that I submitted to the Viper Rapper TH-cam channel:
    • Viper - You'll Goin Ma...
Some will never figure out how to get Iron Leaves in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Iron Leaves Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Iron Leaves Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world. Iron Leaves is available in the game and Jim knows where to obtain Iron Leaves. It's true. And you won't read this either. You won't see any of it. You're none the wiser.
This video and all my videos are about Smogon Singles formats. Thanks.
Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on TH-cam. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

Wake is based on a water type (historically great) and Leaves is based on a grass type (historically shit). GF had their hands tied as far as viability goes, unless they wanted to give Leaves something dumb like grassy terrain+grassy glide.

The future paradoxes on the other hand barely change anything except for Miraidon who's a box art legendary, Valiant who is the only paradox across the board that is a combo of two pokemon and even still doesn't change any more than Great Tusk does with Donphan's design, and Iron Treads who although has the most unique design out of all of them is still widely considered outclassed by Great Tusk in terms of design

I think the point was to make a “Terrain abuse the Pokémon” just like Walking Wake is “Weather Abuse the Pokémon”. Benefiting from every terrain and power boosts from 3 of them is potentially powerful- we just need better terrain setters. Iron Leaves is different in a meta where the Tapus are on virtually every team. It will be different in VGC formats with legal Miraidon.
Also Violet players DEFINITELY did not get the short end of the stick-- if you play the actual games, you'll know. As Raid Bosses, Walking Wake is WAY easier to beat, and can be crushed easily by standard raid builds like Azumarril and Iron Hands (Violet exclusive...) even with bad random players. Add insult to injury, Violet's Miraidon can do a 2-3 turn setup to OHKO WW making it very easy to attain for Violet users. Scarlet players on the other hand... got HOSED. Because with Swords Dance and Electric Terrain, Iron Leaves is an insane Boss fight harder to defeat than most 7* Raids. With SD + Terrain Boost mows down most resists pretty easily, with teams of Kingambit's, Scizors, and Goldhengo's just getting cut down. In a Violet Solo Raid with sufficient prep, it is pretty reasonable to beat-- but if you are Scarlet player trying to catch it online in a raid hosted by Violet with terribly weak newbs (of which there are MANY since the raid offers almost no replay appeal for veteran raiders b/c limited to 1 catch and terrible item drops) it is an absolute nightmare to bring down.
TLDR Violet players have a way way WAY easier time getting both than Scarlet players.

So I think the reason they made Iron Leaves a Grass/Psychic type was to give it boosted attacks in all 3 power-boosting terrains. Since Electric Terrain is the one that goes with the future paradox mons, they had that set aside to artificially boost the power of Psyblade, so then you have STAB Psyblade getting naturally boosted on Psychic Terrain and STAB Grass boosted on Grassy Terrain. (Misty Terrain is excluded because it doesn't boost the power of any type of attack.) In that sense, it becomes a counterpart to Walking Wake, whose Hydro Steam is boosted in both rain and sun.
Unfortunately, in the process, they gave Iron Leaves a terrible dual-typing. Welp.

Not helping Iron Leaves is its confusingly shallow movepool. Its only physical Psychic move is Psyblade, no Zen Headbutt even though its a TM. It doesn't get Stone Edge like regular Virizion, no EQ / Stomping Tantrum, Iron Head, Throat Chop, or Play Rough. For some reason it doesn't learn Psyshock, or even Psychic the move. It's not like Wobbuffet or Unown who are weirdos who play a different game, or even a case like Alolan Sandslash not learning Ice Beam due to its pitiful Sp. Atk. Base 70 is average. It's like they were struggling to come up with a secondary type for it, put a bunch of names in a hat, and pulled Psychic. Walking Wake also has a bit of an oddball movepool, but at least it has just enough to excel. Iron Leaves might actually be the most scuffed Pokemon of all time

In my personal opinion, Iron Leaves did got the same treatment as Walking Wake but the major issue is that GF didn’t realize that Terrain abilities are less common than Weather abilities. And I don’t think the Tapus were in the leaked list of returning Pokemon but it could change.

Problem with Iron Leaves is that it has a very bad defensive typing. Its lacks a very potent stab outside terrain (best being base 90). I think Iron Leaves could have a home in OU (maybe even ubers) if Tapu Koko comes to S/V as it could make Iron Leaves a Kartana on roids due to the terrain causing Iron Leaves' attack to be functionally 170 (in comparison, Rampardos base attack is 165). Walking Wake has a pretty good defensive typing and access to the best stab in the game (Draco Meteor). Walking Wake can hit most of the meta with at least neutral damage with its stab. Its signature move thrives in the sun (120 power with 100 accuracy). Walking Wakes high special attack stat makes it a good terra choice due to its less than optimal coverage.

The fact they managed to give Virizion a worse typing than what it already had is impressive. It’s like a wannabe Grass/Fighting type but without any of the advantages (STAB, resistances to common types, etc) of being Fighting type. Bug (usually U-Turn), Ghost, and Dark type attacks are much more common in OU than Flying and Psychic type attacks so the Psychic typing isn’t doing it any favors for the most part.

I hope if they give us more new paradox Pokemon in the dlc (and I am going to be extremely disappointed if they don’t especially that the dlc is mostly focused on Area Zero) they give the future forms much better competitive wise.
I am pretty sure Gamefreak reacted to the fan base and said “Oh, because most people love the ancient forms we are going to say ‘f it we are going to forget the future again!’”.
This to me is extremely unfair. I am one of the rare who actually loves the future forms more than the ancient forms (that and Miraidon are the reasons why I chose Violet) and the fact that a decent amount of are pretty underwhelming competitively makes me cry sadly. Not to mention I sometimes get mad when I here people criticise the future forms being all robots. That’s supposed to be the point of the future forms.

Gamefreak needs to give grass types better secondary types that actually complement them on the type chart. Grass has been paired with dark and psychic so much lately (Zarude, Calyrax, brute bonnet, and now iron leaves). I like that grass is getting love but they ought to pair it with types it works well with. Grass with electric, rock, steel, fire, or water would’ve been way more effective in terms of cancelling out weaknessses and making it a viable dual type for OU. I think they missed a huge chance to make a solid grass-electric type. That combination would be great since ground is immune to electric but weak to grass. Also imagine if it’s signature move was a strong physical electric attack with no down sides! That would be very valuable! Also electric would’ve smacked corvi and been a nice neutral hit on most steels while resisting gholdengos make it rain and not being weak tk ground as an electric type and to flying as a grass type which is dope. Sad missed opportunity. Hopefully future grass types get paired with types that make it better as opposed to make it more vulnerable. It’s not a great type on paper, but could make for a great combo when paired with the right type.

what comes to mind when discussing iron leaves is just how bad psychic tends to be defensively nowadays. lots of other psychic types like scream tail, hatterene, slowbro, deo-d in natdex, and others would much rather have a better typing that resists fighting. it feels like fairy just kind of completely outclasses psychic nowadays, with psychic's only niche being able to hit toxapex and clodsire.
