You ever hear of Jai Paul?
So in 2010, Jai Paul releases his demo BTSTU on MySpace. And at the time, this was some cutting-edge stuff. It was dubstep and indie rock and r&b all in one song and it -- it just worked! He was taking a lot of elements from various scenes and putting them all into one accessible pop song. I mean you really had to hear this in 2011 to get it. But It just sounded like "this is what the future of music is gonna sound like," ya know?
Anyways, it blows up. Music blogs begin to write good things -- gets called best new track and what not. UK radio stations start throwing it into rotation. THEN record labels catch wind of the single and start a bidding war to sign this guy. He eventually signs to XL Recordings. Things are happening for the kid. And as if that wasn’t enough, Drake drops a track that samples the song [Drake - Dreams Can Buy Money]. Beyonce drops a track that samples the song [Beyonce - End of Time].
It was a huge deal for someone coming out of the indie scene. Not even a year later, Jai Paul drops another demo called Jasmine. And by now, people are calling this guy the second coming of Prince. Like musically. Things go quiet for a bit and then BAM -- April 13, 2013, his album goes up on Bandcamp. But with no name and everything’s untitled. His label starts denying the release, pretty much saying they didn’t authorize this thing to go on sale much less be released. So what happened?
The guys laptop got stolen. And whoever had it uploaded his unfinished album online...

Always
Ah okay, I just presumed that the first video was a leak...
I just found out recently about your channel and I've just binge watched every video essay you've made so far and next thing I knew, you're my new favorite music analysis channel.
I know that would too much to ask, but can you do a video about Bjork? I only dove in her most obscure parts of her discography a few weeks ago and I just can't get over how much she somehow not only reinvented herself since the Sugarcubes and Debut era, but she reshaped the whole pop landscape by making avant garde and ambient pop with offputting visuals somehow commercially successful, despite people calling her a weird tryhard.
Thank you for your content.👍
Your videos are amazing. There's no other youtuber who I have the notification bell turned on for. Would you consider doing a video a Florence and The Machine? They go from strength to strength, always pushing forward but consistently amazing and complex.
BTSTU prophesied the future of Jai Paul. “I know I’ve been gone a long time, but I’m back and i want what is mine.” Basically what happened.
Dude. That's amazing
Lmao he’s made the Coachella 2023 lineup
@@Aarensilveira I was about to comment this lol
its crazy that when his album was leaked macklemore's thrift shop was number 1 on billboard, he was definitely ahead of his time
It was complete, Jai's wasn't, if it was leaked right after he finished, he'd be a global superstar
@@whyareyouusinglightmode2098 you think he'll ever come back?
ya that Macklemore song is sick
@@Randhawa241 no
@@whyareyouusinglightmode2098 chill 😭😭
I respect Jai a lot. He probably makes 20-30 tracks a year but only really likes one or two. Just because you’re absent to other people doesn’t mean you aren’t working hard. Imagine your 6 year project getting stolen. The worst part is losing the DAW file. He probably never made the changes he wanted
Yeah, his open letter when he released the Bait Ones (Leak 04-13) record was pretty sad - you could sense he had massive plans for his debut album that didn’t pan out.
But he and his brother, A.K. have been working with some cool talents in the Paul Institute (the creative hub they launched together), so it’s nice to see he’s still making music in some capacity.
His laptop wasn’t stolen. It was ripped from a burned CD that was misplaced. And the 2 people who leaked it on bandcamp were traced and arrested.

Oh.my.GOD. I LITERALLY don't know anyone who knows jai Paul, this makes me so happy that you made this video my friend! You have a new supporter for life

Same
First found out about him through GTA V, one of his songs is in that game, lmao
I’m 27 and allot of my people know of him because early TH-cam era drake sampling him on dreams money can buy
I discovered him through his debut single ‘BTSTU’ being placed on Pitchfork’s list of the greatest songs of the 2010s. I love that song so much, it’s genius.
The pain he went through when he had his album leaked shows the depth of his creativity
Jai Paul, Frank Ocean, James Blake & Sampha. They all have this spark that is so rare to find in todays climate of music. Their artistry is unmatched
Sampha is criminally underrated
This aged well.
Grimes does too
and tame impala, kanye, pharell, more artists too but yeah there are some great musical minds we are fortunate enough to study in todays music

Next title: What happened to [DEMONETIZED]
Well first of all. BTSTU stands for “Back in time to Save the Universe”, also when it fades to orange that’s a picture of his brother AK Paul, not Jai. His brother also appears on the cover of the leaked album and in other photo shoots
The Paul brothers have started the Paul institute of music and have tons of artists making music in their genre, they bought an old night club in London and are doing the projects there. AK Paul also had a ton of low key underground music out. Also collabs with a female artist named NAO. They also produced a song for Miguel’s album.
He’s still producing, still writing.
There’s lots you missed here.
Jai was also on Childish Gambino's last album doing mixing or something for the Ariana Grande feature
@@TxWIll twas also in an episode of Atlanta
Link the low key AK Paul underground music for the homies pls. I been a fan from day one and I didn’t know that part
Wow you really dunked him
Jai Paul is legit so good lol, which he'd drop again, but he moves at his own pace.
This dude is straight fire. Discovered this album about six months ago and I think glass animals suck ass now
😂
You do realise you don't have to shit all over another artist it order to appreciate another one. Such a juvenile opinion.
Bro my Spotify played him after listening to glass animals I was like who’s this
Glass animals has always been trash lol
@@jonathanmora6728 lies
The fact he had this sound in his productions in 2013 is insane, so beyond his time

I heard BTSTU for the first time a few days ago. It completely blew me away, so I’m super excited to check out what else Jai Paul has coming.
he’s never coming :(
And now he’s going to be at Coachella!!
BTSTU was a banger when it blew up again in 2015-16
it blew up then?
Again ??
That intro with the ipod lock sound effect ends me back to 2010 dude
I heard his song in Grand Army during a party seen and fell in love
Literally same. I listen everyday
Same. At first I thought was gonna be some party song from 09.
But the scene with dom smoking by her window while listening to her podcast and the song in the background is just so beautiful.
I've probably heard it 100 times in the last 2 weeks. Its definitely my 2021 song
bro he's playing coachella.....i can't fucking believe it. he's actually playing a live show...does that mean new music?? is this the good honest return (obviously the two singles were a form of a return but not a full fledged we're doin it return)....i'll fucking cry if he releases an album this year. seeing him on that coachella line up i fully got emotional. too bad i'm broke & can't go hahahahahaha youtube videos it is!
fr bro, i was saving to go and see Frank Ocean but fuck, JAI PAUL TOO? that Sunday will be LEGENDARY
And skip to this year
2023 J will be playing his first live show after all this time.. .. damn times have changed!!
crazy what a decade can do
I remember this period of music and hearing BTSTU with the same feeling and sentiment as you. BTSTU just came up on shuffle, first time hearing it in years, like being reunited with an old friend.
COACHELLA LINEUP DROP BROUGHT ME HERE
Same, I was surprised he’d be there!
It better mean he has an album on the horizon 👀
Some people make music but people like Daft Punk, Jai Paul and Kaytranada pioneer sounds that last forever
This video changed my life. I saw it on release, and it was my first exposure to Jai. He's been at the top of my rotation since.
nice man!
Dude.. this video is perfect. Couldnt be more fitting or concise of an overview of jai’s career. Thank you for this, the production eas class
I hate when great videos get copyright strikes: I feel obligated to watch it again ASAP to help the creator. Hope the video does well man
bro thats a.k. paul at 2:30 lmfaoo
I came here just watching thing on Jai to comfort me. My dogs killed my outside ferril cat this morning. I’ve fed her since she was a baby and she belonged to the world but still allowed me to love her. Im very sad.
this video got me into jai pual thanks so much!
Did anyone else hear and love Jasmine on radio mirror park on GTA V? Loved all the music on there but that song really stood out to me and just captured the games vibe and gave it a special feeling for me. Didn’t know all of this was going on when playing that game and listening to that song 😮 only searched him on YT because I saw he’s on the coachella line up this year
Literally the exactly same for me
I always thought BTSTU was just "Beat stew"
He makes my heart warm
years have gone by and I still wish for more jai paul everyday
THIS VIDEO IS A GODSEND 🙏🙌 I thought I’d never here Jai Paul’s name again😭 THANK YOU,
could you also do a video on Lorn, I never hear anyone talk about him❤️❤️❤️
Jai is releasing a new stuff so keep an ear out
I watched this video about a year and a half ago, most underrated middle 8 video. Btstu (demo) is now my favorite song. You can listen to it on repeat and hear a new layer every time. Each listen is never the same. What a song.
I’ve always been so interested in the Jai Paul story. He’s a big reason why I just got the Coachella 23 wristband, and he did not disappoint. Can’t wait for Jai’s new era
Thank you for making this video and reminding me of Jai. I remember when his first tracks dropped and when his album got leaked. So much hype back than, always wondered what happened afterwards.
Now I'll go and have a good time on spotify
I Love the way that jai uses sonic elements in his songs. It's so creative.
Just like you I’ve been listening to Jai Paul since the album leaked, it’s artists like him that lead me to James Blake and the likes, he is an absolutely amazing artist and I too can’t wait, for the stuff he is hopefully dropping soon. And I’m all the way in South Africa.
I just found out recently about your channel and I've just binge watched every video essay you've made so far and next thing I knew, you're my new favorite music analysis channel.

2020 and i didn't know he officially rereleased all his tracks. omfg. so glad i decided to watch this, even though i THOUGHT i already did. amazing video as well, nicely put together
wow i remember coming across his music and loving it in my early teens, I never realised the story behind it
Jai Paul is to hip-hop what Burial is to UK Dubstep. Culturally significant with unique soundscapes with no desire to have spotlight.
He’s on Coachella this year!
Jasmine is also on radio mirror park ( one of the gta radio stations)
This. Been in the game since day one. Rockstar who ever picks tracks is early. Glamorous Just got covered by Jack Harlow.
I thought so as I was looking through your videos to rewatch this after listening to the album. Thanks
love ya man, great videos as always, even for a reupload ;)
yo whats up bro yo whats up bro.
I was so surprised and hyped that you'd released another Jai Paul video so soon after the last one...guess I'll watch this again though; was a really great vid
WHAT THE FLIPP I DIDNT KNOW THERE WAS MORE THAN THE TWO SINGLES AND KNOW YOURE TELLING ME THERES A WHOLE ALBUM AND ANOTHER TWO SINGLES WAATTTAGAFFFAAHSKZN
btstu is back to save the universe, heard there were some samples of beyoncé and just so many things that actually made it sound so realistic for the future of music, this dude IS the second coming of Prince. i truly think he has the potential to build an album built off historical value plus the futuristic sounds & samples he has to offer.
Jai Paul the most underaged artist in this century !!! Jai style is legit a whole vibe
If you havnt heard of Point Point...they are an absolute unit of a team that probably has some interesting story. They take time too make music and its beautiful
How about a video about Kings of Leon? I’d love to hear about their past and then being a “family band”
i feel him...hes a perfectionist..
i so want to go back to 2013 mannnn
Hearing this for the first time had me trippin it was like hearing colors and seeing sounds. It makes me feel something uncertain. Its like an emotional bomb drop.
I was late to the party and only found Jai through the GTA V Mirror City radio or whatever it was. It's crazy how hard it is to find other people who have even heard of him
Who else getting this in their reccomended after Coachella 2023's lineup is announced
Was in love with BTSU and Jasmine when they first dropped. But will never forget the first time I head Genevieve (listened on quality headphones), I cried. Not even sure why. It was like I was hearing the beauty of God or some shit like that.
I’m sure these videos take a while to create but please upload more often you are an artist!
Who’s here after his Coachella set?
Thanks for the background, wasn't aware of the back story. Nice to hear someone else who appreciates musical craftsmanship: can't stop listening to Str8 Outta Mumbai (those weird swells! where does he get the idea to go from one section to another?) Your description of what he gets done musically is very well articulated, glad I'm not the only one that was captured and inspired by just one or 2 tracks by Jai Paul. Glad also to hear that he is moving forward with his gift to the world. Best Regards, -£ucas🌈
Wait, I’ve been listening to his new songs and loving it. No idea who he was. I immediately liked it on Spotify.
This video is a masterpiece. The editing alone is beautiful.
Coachella is going to be lit with him on the lineup
this man created a whole different sound that no one had every heard in 2007 and just dissapeared. certified goat
The video was so good, I watched it twice.
AND NOW THE VINYL IS COMING OUT, I JUST ORDERED. MUSIC HISTORY!
This album is timeless and priceless
Could you do a video on Parliament Funkadelic?
Thanks for this video! Back in 2012 a friend mine who was a DJ at the time turned me on to Jai Paul. BTSTU & Jasmine were on heavy rotation on my iPod Nano.❤ I was wondered what happened to him. Thanks for filling in the blanks.
Who’s here after the coachella set list?🎉❤😊
The way this video started sounds so much like conversations with my friends.
Great title, spot on the money, Jasmine is utterly crazy, so unfair that he isn't recognised as the amazing artist he is by more people.
Listening to Jai Paul's unfinished songs whilst on magic mushrooms is intense. Worth a try! Great video
I shall ask again for the sake of preservation:
Yo did I just hear you hit that vape?!
Did he edit it out of the start??
Thanks middle 8, very cool
BTSTU = Back To Save The Universe
and the dude is gonna perform at coachella
Zion Fox theme blew my goddamn mind… like i felt that type of chills that go down your spine
Fortunately, he was and now he is. The king has returned.
His music is soo good
First heard btstu on the radio last summer , instantly fell in love with the song
Have you considered making a video about everything everything?
One of my favourite bands of ALL TIME
@@Middle8 ooo I'm glad to hear!!!
Middle 8 they are just something else! suffragette is just ugh! Amazing!
for all these years he has been working on his music every day... bro
Jai Paul come back! I cant fing believe that music was from 2011 it sounds like its from 2018 holy crap
Jai Paul was just on the most recent season of atlanta. Dudes still around. I hope he has his moment
Ben Khan is legit great just so y'all know, give him a shot. My favorite tracks are savage, youth, drive pt 1, and blade.
Shit I totaly forgot about him, thanks for reminding me, blade and 1000 are my favorite tracks from him.
I think I only got into Ben Khan because I was craving more Jai Paul. He's like a B grade version.
@@kivsanchez811 same
@@kivsanchez811 I feel bad for him cuz he still made some absolute bangers but they're not comparable to the actual thing.
Those are sick but the album is way better IMO even though it doesn’t sound as much like Jai. do it right, ruby, monsoon daydream, atw
Great video! I had no idea about this person. No clue how his song turned up in my spotify liked playlist. This stuff moves me to dance every time.
I love your style, really well spoken yet fluent and effortless
Man I know about this dude since 2019 and I never listened to him.
Guess I gotta listen to him now!
just discovering this guy and this is the best music I've ever heard. been years since i felt like this
This channel is just GREAT! And a video about Jai Paul? Man! Touched me. respect+
