This car deserves much more recognition than it got. Too bad it's not in production right now.
It's a 1963 Avanti. There were only 2 years, 1963 and 1964
Most V8 engines sound very dimilar. Studebaker V8's had a very distictive sound. You can more clearly hear each cylinder firing. I own a 1955 259 in a 1949 2R16 1.5 ton stakeside truck.😊
The Avanti never fails to be AWESOME! Compare this 62 year old car with it's competition, the Thunderbird, and Buick Riviera. The Avanti still looks modern, those other two are stuck in the chromy 60's.
I'm not sure about that claim about General Motors pressuring a company to stop making Studebaker bodies. (I also own a Studebaker Avanti, by the way.) The company was Molded Fiberglass Company of Ashtabula, Ohio. Everything I've heard and read in the Studebaker world indicates that, besides being late on delivery, there were quality problems with the Molded Fiberglass Co. results. And that's why Studebaker took it in-house. Of course, with this being something new to Studebaker, they had some of their own quality problems. As far as General Motors, they made about 15,000 Corvettes in for the 1962 model year and about 20,000 for the 1963 model year. I would imagine it would have been a very high risk business decision to jump ship to another body manufacturer for any concerns about who, to them, were a small company not long for this world anyway.

When we were just teenagers back in the 1960s when this car came onto the market. Rumors were already circulating that Studebaker was in trouble and this car was supposed to revive the company but it was too late to help. My best friend at the time who was a real "Stuudi" fan claimed the Avanti was decades ahead of it's time. Guess he may have been right but the public back then wasn't buying it.

It could have easily held its own against any period e-type Jaguar, Ferrari, Lamborghini and so on, both in styling and performance.
