The interesting thing about how Maynard James Keenan writes the lyrics is that he let's the band write the music first, and then he comes in after and writes the lyrics to fit. That is why there seems to be odd syllabic structures(drawn out vowels and odd emphasis).
I am a woman from the UK. I am 67 and have been into these from the beginning. Ten Thousand Days is an album to listen to next. It's actually about his mother who was ill after a stroke and spent most of her life (Ten Thousand Days)is how long she lived and her faith in God. I think. I have seen them 3 times, last being here in the UK 9th May just gone. An awesome band. I think they are like a heavy pink floyd. Another great band to listen to. X
I spent a lot of time with Lateralis during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Each new Tool disk or album is a reflection of Maynards life trials and experiences. Early on it was angst and pushing back against hair bands and the Hollywood shot show. 10,000 days was the experience of the loss of Maynards mother. Lateralis is Maynards spiritual awakening and now Fear Innoculum is the next evolution in his spiritual growth. So much emotion expressed is each song like individual life chapters .
Drum cam!! Now that I've seen how Danny Carey makes that actual drum magic through the drum cam vid, I have even madder respect for his skills. This song just settles in your very marrow and refuses to leave, ha.
This song is really well composed but Danny's has way more impressive songs in his discocraphy, unfortunately Pneuma is the only one that is very well filmed and recorded.
"Like tribal aliens... does that make sense?" I think you just successfully summed up a decent portion of Tool's discography. Lol. I was watching another reaction channel listen to Pink Floyd not too long ago and one of them said something along the lines of 'it's like the blues... from another planet' - these types of comments are the reason I love reaction channels. Appreciate it, brother. Cheers!
You want a Tool song about being abducted by aliens?? Lol, listen to Lost Keys/Rosetta stoned next. If you're ready for a trippy song, that is. It's incredibly fun and unique.
When this album came out, I went into my room, turned off the lights and went through the entire album with my eyes closed. It's not just this song, but the entire album that needs to be experienced this way. It's incredible!
Hey Sean, As requested, here we go. Great you're having a blast discovering TOOL. Like any TOOL fan, I'd love to be able to discover their entire discography for the first time like you. By now, I know every TOOL song by heart (guitar player speaking haha) except for maybe Opiate EP songs and some songs on Undertow. It became my #1 band to the point where I ended up searching and buying one of the limited editions of the Gibson Les Paul Silverburst Adam Jones Signature as well as the entire gear setup which is almost complete just to recreate this TOOL sound I love so much. Some back story for this exceptional song. It's on their latest album "Fear Inoculum" (2019) which got me into TOOL two years ago and which I considered to be their pinnacle (even though I love Aenema, Lateralus and 10,000 days like crazy). Fear Inoculum is just an experience, it's the perfect word, just like you described. Each song from this album is a journey. You must listen at home with headphones on and no one around that can bother you. When you search for the title track online, you found that "Pneuma" means "breath", "soul". When looking up the lyrics, you understand that it's very spiritual-oriented. Sonically that also confirms this sense of "journey". This is their thing, adding layers upon layers. It's awesome. Like some people will surely recommend I'm sure, you need to listen and react if you can to the live cam version of Pneuma which is entirely focused on Danny Carey, the drummer (one of the best if not the best in the world). It will give you a whole new perspective on the song. You will better understand the percussive sounds at the beginning and in the middle section when Danny goes full on soloing and displaying his greatness. Coming from a musical background, I think it's why you guessed right about the flanger effect on the guitar for the end part. There is also a delay effect throughout the entire song in the guitar signal chain that gives this atmosphere, along with the bass and drums. Just so you know for the rest of your journey discovering TOOL since I can share with you my knowledge as a guitar player, Adam Jones always had this specific sound of his that everyone tries to recreate. The specs on his guitar and the amps along with the pedals he uses give him a very "bright" guitar sound, lots of mids and treble, less gain than we think. This is how he can "cut through" the mix especially with Justin's bass tone (which is essential for the TOOL sound). In a nutshell, here you have it. I love listening to this song, I love playing it on guitar, it's one of my favorite (though I love every TOOL song, I think you know the drill with them by now). Glad you get to experience this as well. Keep going into the rabbit hole.
Thanks for sharing your experience Lucas. I am a fan for over 20 years it’s awesome to see someone who loves them as much as I do. Also I have the flaming third eye from parabola tattooed on my left forearm like the end of the music video.
Yes, the build-up in Pneuma is incredible and the pay off is so satisfying! If you loved Pneuma I highly recommend the last 3 songs off of their Lateralus album: "Disposition, Reflection, and Triad." They are 3 distinct songs but they blend into each other seamlessly.
Everyone in the TOOL hivemind are with you on this journey. It's art, almost beyond art into a pure expression. This song is almost religion. When they drop into those amazing musical phrases, you have to stop and say, "YES". It hits you hella hard. It's like everyone plugs in exactly at that point in the song, whenever they experience it, even if it's a different point in space and time. You know exactly where someone else was when they hit those points in the song. Magic. So, yes, everyone is exactly with you on the journey through this song. It was a strange experience to hear it the first time, and it grows each time... and especially when we can see other people experience it and react to it. Practically religious, magical. Not many can attain this mastery for sure.
Many more like this one. You're in for one hell of a musical journey and awakening. Nothing like it. Can't wait for you to react to "Descending" off the same album. It's a ride. Spiral out bud 🌀👁🧘🏻♂🙌🏼
So, interesting thing is that Tool recreates all of this live, as you'll see in the drum-cam video everyone is suggesting... There are no extra drum tracks or overdubs, Danny Carey plays all of it at the same time, in one sitting. They call him "The Octopus" for a reason 🐙
I'll pile on with the drum cam recommendation. Seeing Danny actually play it takes this song to another level. If nothing else, you get to see his crazy setup. The intro part where you said it sounds like a xylophone is an electronic drum. He has a bunch of them in addition to all of his toms. All the songs on this album are long and Danny even mentioned toying with the idea of a straight through continuous album. In the past they often had to break them up, so that is why you will see people recommending to do multiple songs together.
each of the six 'songs' on Fear Inoculum and the Adam Jones instrumental 'the Witness' are all of the same extraordinarily high calibre as this and worth checking out. i agree that they have an intimacy in their recordings that sets them apart.
Been a Tool fan since Undertow and heard all the songs many times, I still get the same amazement from listening and still take a journey while listening. Check out The Patient, it is a sleeper for me. Really hits great even after all these years.
You literally have to "watch" the performance in order to hear what's happening. So counter-intuitive to the premise of "listening". Excellent review brother!
Sean, my most respected #ViberKing - you've introduced me some great bands, f.ie. Dance Gavin Dance & Jinjer (didn't need that for Blind Channel 🖤). Tool is new to me, but so clear offspring of the greatest progressive rock bands starting from the ancient 1970's. Do love this genre, so this band is included. Go ahead, make some love to the progemusic. ❤️🔥
I really enjoyed this reaction! I remember the night this album released. We had been waiting 13 years for this so anticipation was high and I absolutely couldn't wait to listen. I closed my eyes, put on my Beats, sparked a J, and just soaked it in. And this song absolutely blew me away, so technical, so precise, sex for your ears is an excellent description. It reminded me of Reflection but elevated to another level. I'm glad I could witness this experience with you. I know people mentioned the drum cam video, but ya its good, Danny being the legend he is, great stuff!
Welcome to Progressive Music! This record is from a more recent album. I noticed right away that this record took major influence from their previous, incorporating and elaborating further rhythmically and tonally. I felt in some ways this song specifically was an homage to their previous records while still managing to bring something new to the table. 10/10 a musical experience.
Mad respect to you. Tool is a personal journey. Open ended enough for everyone to take it at a rate they are comfortable. Tool is special. Take your time and enjoy the ride.
8:06 - Your willingness to just go with it is something I respect greatly. You respect the music enough to go with it without reservation or judgement.
You're a king. def subbed 3 min into the video. The level of respect that you gave to this listen is awesome. Words will never explain how this group changed my life, and this song in particular is my favorite of all time. The way that you described it as a "musical experience" is the best way to understand it. That is exactly what i've tried to tell people. If you ever get to see them live... do not miss it. It's to this day, the most spiritual, chest pounding, and intense moment I've ever been apart of. Again, great videos and keep up the work brotha. Also - Im always looking for new sound so if you have anything special to you as tool is to me. please let us all know.
Thank you for your support Garrett 🙏🖤 I would love to see them live next chance I get! Also, if you haven’t heard of Sleep Token, I’d check that band out. Very similar to Tool in the sense that the music takes you on a journey. Phenomenal sound and drummer as well. Cheers 🤘
Hearing this song live, in person, is absolutely amazing. Seeing it be performed will melt your face off. Both times I heard it, I left saying it was one of the best of the evening.
Man, really love your interpretation. I never thought of it like that. I love how this song can evoke so many perspectives. I seem to get something different from it each time I listen.
I took a dose of mushrooms when I first got this album. I laid on the ground and I have 2 sonos speakers and i placed them on either side of my head and I went to a different planet. It was the most amazing experience
Love your reaction. First time I viewed your channel was this video and it earned a subscription. Not just because it's TOOL, but the no weakness. It shows the value you have for your fellow human. I started a path of shedding ego and listen to learn and live to love. And the no weakness is inspirational. Thank you brother. Now my suggestion(s) Reflection. The Patient. Close those eyes and take those journeys. My weakness became my strength through TOOL. My power is in the recognition. My power is I give no fucks about ego. But I'll sure as hell ruin a body that needs the lesson. Much love fucker!
This reaction embodies what it means to me about listening to TOOL. You go places in your mind brotha, and you relive things, you get closure and forgiveness, you get euphoria and sadness. I love the video, and how you had a journey for us to watch.. Ty 🙏
Ha! Alien VS predetor. Sean, I dig your intro of your own work. It remind me of digable planets meets paperboy by ditty and set a drift for a memory. All revolutionary originals for th genre. The mix is off the hook! Oldie and underrated. And now, I feel it's so rad that you resonate with tool. That is growth as a human and a rapper. I have seen a trend where many, I mean many rappers resonate with tool.. What is your opinion on that? I feel it's because of the mix number one and..? Thank you for experiencing tool, you put a smile on my face.
I used to take LSD but honestly, I never needed to experience Tool's music. When you think about music and what it means, it's some of the most precious and valuable things we can have. Songs mean so much to people, they shape your life. I don't even know what my life would have been like without Tool's music
I once drove over 2,000 miles to see Tool live in N'Orleans and the driving was the short art of the trip, bro, lol. Pnuema is definitely in my top 3 for this band and they are one of my top three bands. You are totally right about listening sober versus not. You still get the idea. I think that's because psychedelics don't really do much your mind can't do, they just make it impossible for your mind not to. If have some idea what your looking for and do some things, you can mostly get there for short intervals without any other external input but music like this.
Dude...this isn't even everyone's favorite song on the album 😂....I really hope you do more off Fear Inoculum. It gets more and more complex. That was only track 2. Love your reactions brother!
Tribal aliens had me laughing but homey, you went on a super ride there. This song is a masterpiece as is almost every Tool track. If you haven’t already you must experience the rest. Peace 👍.
tool does not give a shit about radio, or how long it takes to make a song or how long a song is. they only care about making music that they want , no formula like verse chores , verse chores, bridge , etc. every album has a different vibe. yes tool sounds like only 1 band its tool btw i subbed brother
I couldn't pick up the time signature during the first part. I thought it made no sense. Then I realized when Maynard starts his part, the music is playing to his lyrics (his poem, really) rather than the other way around.
Might sound crazy doing a double-up of the same song but you should really check out the live version drum cam, you won't be disappointed. th-cam.com/video/FssULNGSZIA/w-d-xo.html
It's funny you mention aliens or being abducted. You should check out "Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned" by Tool. Read along with the lyrics. You'll enjoy that after this. lol.
fwiw, I saw them live in 2002 on shrooms, and yes. It was a-fucking-mazing. I recommend that song above only because of the reference. You'll probably enjoy the Lateralus album, Aenima is harder, and opiate is harder still, plus more live stuff and collabs... the lead singer fronts a couple other bands too. If you enjoyed this you're gonna appreciate them on another level now that you're older.
I'm still catching up on your Tool reacts i discovered today, and I have to say... WHOEVER SUGGESTED THIS TO YOU, AND DIDN'T TELL YOU TO WATCH THE DRUM CAM DID YOU WRONG!!! lolol You've discovered enough Tool to learn why Danny Carey earned the nickname 'The Octopus', and why he's considered the best drummer in music today,
This song is somewhat heavy lyrically. I feel, and this just my opinion, that this is a call for us all to come together as one. This album overall sort of has the theme that our species is fucked and needs to work together before we destroy ourselves more. Look up the meaning of pneuma and pull up the lyrics. They're not the most profound lyrics mjk has put to paper, but they do have an important meaning. I recommend going over the lyrics after your initial reactions without them.

Dude, if this is an eargasm, you’ve GOT TO listen to Descending if haven’t already !!!
Before everyone else chimes in, you have to check out the drum cam video of this. Absolutely mind blowing. Great reaction.
I've watched the live drum cam at least 50 times, it never gets old man.

+1. Don't even need to do a react video, but just treat yourself to watching it.

"does that make sense?"
If it makes sense to you, then yes
Check out the Drum Cam version of this song. Danny is beyond incredible! (Vic Firth)
Agreed, the inevitable next step is to see Danny's (well, Vic Firth's) drum cam video. The day you watch it, make sure you have no other plans...;-)
If you're talking about the live one where he's in the Celtics jersey, yeah. Definitely among the elite class of drummers.
From the same album, Descending is totally a ride, and the guitar is so sweet!!! Enjoy!
Do it.
My favorite song on the album. They’re all amazing but I feel descending is a masterpiece.
You want a Tool song about being abducted by aliens?? Lol, listen to Lost Keys/Rosetta stoned next. If you're ready for a trippy song, that is. It's incredibly fun and unique.
I don't think he's ready yet. Lol.
lol

When this album came out, I went into my room, turned off the lights and went through the entire album with my eyes closed. It's not just this song, but the entire album that needs to be experienced this way. It's incredible!
Same dude. What an album!
Drum cam time! You must witness the greatness that is the octopus 🐙!
Hey Sean,
As requested, here we go.
It will give you a whole new perspective on the song.
Reflection is absolutely magical.
There is a live version, it’s just a drum cam. Definitely check that out. It’s incredibly mesmerizing 12 minutes will feel like 2.
Absolutely agree that this song requires undivided attention to fully appreciate.
Lol
Here for it! Drum cam time now! Haha!
I'll keep suggesting it... do their catalogue start to finish and have lyrics!
"They got so much potential to let it rip" proceeds to let it rip 😂
Divine timing 🤣
This whole album is space candy.
Many more like this one. You're in for one hell of a musical journey and awakening. Nothing like it. Can't wait for you to react to "Descending" off the same album. It's a ride. Spiral out bud 🌀👁🧘🏻♂🙌🏼

Yes I’m always in awe when I watch their live performances..
"Dude, I just went on an trip." Nothing else needs to be said. Eargasm indeed. Good stuff my dude.
Generally, we fans call it a Toolgasm! The first of many and I'm here for it!
Haha that’s a very fitting word for what I experienced 🔥🤘
I'll pile on with the drum cam recommendation. Seeing Danny actually play it takes this song to another level. If nothing else, you get to see his crazy setup. The intro part where you said it sounds like a xylophone is an electronic drum. He has a bunch of them in addition to all of his toms.

Love how this song rests you back down gently at the end
💯
Watch the drum cam lol. Great reaction. No other band like TOOL
Definately have Tool figured out my guy :) " Structued in a Tool way " ha!
Must do drum cam version now!!! Enjoy..
I used to take LSD but honestly, I never needed to experience Tool's music. When you think about music and what it means, it's some of the most precious and valuable things we can have. Songs mean so much to people, they shape your life. I don't even know what my life would have been like without Tool's music
Next on your tool journey is the song Parabola. I'd recommend it - perhaps ignore the video - it's a little weird.
Possibly their best song :)
February 2020? That was the N'awlins show I saw
it doesn't matter Tool, Puscifer or APC. what ever Maynard does is that good.
Dude...this isn't even everyone's favorite song on the album 😂....I really hope you do more off Fear Inoculum. It gets more and more complex. That was only track 2. Love your reactions brother!
More on the way! Appreciate you 🙏
Check out the drum cam version!
Spot on my friend you give good face 😈🤣 great reaction
Tribal aliens had me laughing but homey, you went on a super ride there. This song is a masterpiece as is almost every Tool track. If you haven’t already you must experience the rest. Peace 👍.
Danny Carey drum cam homie 🔥
Came to the comments to say this lol definitely need to watch the drum cam vid!
Danny the Octopus! Go search this live at Boston Garden. It’s incredible!
Yes. That is the appropriate reaction 😌🙏
Tool’s music will indeed be studied by future generations as its own genre.
For sure! They truly have a timeless sound
and down the Tool rabbit hole we go.... great reaction
We going deep in this rabbit hole 😵💫
@@SeanStaxxMusic i'd love to see your reaction to Tool's "7empest". hands down my fave track on Fear Inoculum
TRIBAL ALIENS. New description for the win!
😂🤘
Nice one, respect💪
"Sex to the ears..."
Perfect analogy.
So apparently Danny is playing in 33/8 which is broken down into subsections of 5/8, 6/8, 7/8 and 8/8 but not always in the same way/order.
tool does not give a shit about radio, or how long it takes to make a song or how long a song is. they only care about making music that they want , no formula like verse chores , verse chores, bridge , etc. every album has a different vibe. yes tool sounds like only 1 band its tool btw i subbed brother
I love that they make music exactly how they want and feel. True expression leaves you with true creativity and authenticity 🔥 thank you 🖤
check the drum cam version of this song. impressive
It’s comin!
1:22 "So weird but honestly it's pretty cool"
Thats probably my whole Tool experience and I love it lol
Haha I’m starting to get that vibe each song but tool is becoming more and more special each song I do
Try Rosetta stone. It's about alien abduction. Awesome some .tool sings it also .and the grudge .and lateralusis.try those
📝 added to the list!
I couldn't pick up the time signature during the first part. I thought it made no sense. Then I realized when Maynard starts his part, the music is playing to his lyrics (his poem, really) rather than the other way around.
Yea it’s truly amazing how it doesn’t follow a typical signature and almost feels off beat but it’s perfectly in time.
Please check out the drum cam 🙏
It's like cake, there's all kinds, some are super SUPER RICH, pleasure to decadent for day to day. But when you do indulge, it's superb.
Danny Carey is the goat of drums since Neil's pearts passing.
Yes, Peart took over when Bonham died, and now Carey wears the Crown.....
you need to check fear inoculum from the same album its a great song
I'm gonna use "tribal aliens" to describe Tool's sound from now on.
Hahaha! Wait til you've heard it 20 times.... it just gets better and better.
This masterpiece gets better?! 😵💫
You have to check the live version of Danny Carey playing this to really appreciate this song!!!!!
Welcome brother.
🤘
If you haven’t already listened to Descending, get ready for a true EARGASM !!!
Oh I did and it was incredible 😵💫
Lateralus from them is the best Album in Music History imo. Check it out. Beste Song...maybe the Grudge
Might sound crazy doing a double-up of the same song but you should really check out the live version drum cam, you won't be disappointed. th-cam.com/video/FssULNGSZIA/w-d-xo.html
Yep. We do fucking understand. 😉
😵💫🤘
"Oh wow, what an intro!" Keeps listening to intro for another minute.
Lmaooo
Subbed for TOOL. 🤘
🙏🖤 more on the way
Drum Cam!
I'm still catching up on your Tool reacts i discovered today, and I have to say... WHOEVER SUGGESTED THIS TO YOU, AND DIDN'T TELL YOU TO WATCH THE DRUM CAM DID YOU WRONG!!! lolol
You've discovered enough Tool to learn why Danny Carey earned the nickname 'The Octopus', and why he's considered the best drummer in music today,
New sub! Love Tool! Check out the kids from O,Keefe do 46 and 2
Best band on the planet currently. Adam jones. jm Keenan. Danny Carey. Justin chanceler.the best
Rosetta Stoned is their most complex song, It will melt your brain.

@@SeanStaxxMusic Hell yes. Strap in
The kind of wrapping you do for a living begins with a 'w' and takes place in a Chipotle franchise.
Chipotle is overrated af! I prefer Cava 🔥
You were getting lost in the sauce my man. Me too every time with this song
