What gets me about Tom is his authenticity. He tells a good story, but it true and he’s not paid to tell it. I can’t ge5 3nough of his wisdom.

Wooden plates: "They float! If you drop em over the side, you can go back for them. Good bit of man-overboard practice..."
And with you on everything else Tom. Nice food and drink tastes nicer (out) off good crockery or glassware. Think I'd keelhaul anyone I saw presenting me with decent malt from plastic.

Tom I love you. I couldn't agree more. Your tales of "I bought this in 1975"...etc really made me laugh because that is exactly what I'm like. Gawd bless ya....I tell everyone about my shoes that I bought 20 years ago and still look brand new...and some deck shoes that I bought around the same time that have now moulded to my feet and show no sign of deteriorating. Those deck shoes have been soaked many times in the sea, left out for days in heavy rain, used to walk miles inland...and are still going...they'll probably outlive me!

  • @wilbuzllf5057

Perfect. Couldn't agree more and it's great to see your push against plastic. We actually had to special order the ceramic/porcelain plates instead of choosing one of the hundreds of choices of ugly plastic plates. We do have a set of (actually really good high quality) drinking glasses in some sort of heavy plastic. I thought about wooded plates a while ago but wasn't sure until I saw this. Great video, thanks for sharing :)

I kept the red hard plastic plates that are as old as the boat from the early 80ties. They do the job and fit perfectly in the galley. The previous owners daughter has fond memories of them as well, and really likes seeing them in daily use. Who am I to discard of them now.... Love you take on it though.

I am absolutely with you on the plastic plates, mugs and glasses Tom. My boating is on a much smaller scale and doesn't involve us cooking and eating onboard; But we have spent over 25 years camping, caravanning and motorhomeing... I have to say that I have tried all the plastic good on offer but we ditched them years and years ago. There is nothing worse than and nice trip around France, stopping off at a vineyard and picking up a few choice bottles and then drinking them out of plastic!! I have found that the plastic plates, glasses and mugs even blow off the table! Yes the ceramic and glass alternatives are heavier, less of a problem on a boat I guess, a potential problem on a caravan... just take less clothes I say! We too have had very few breakages. When we first took glasses with us we would carefully wrap them in tea towels... these days we don't even bother with that. Glass glasses are even very cheap from places like Wilco, a quarter of the price of a plastic one. If they break, replace them, but always carry a couple of spares!!

Yay Tom! I like my treasured mugs and plates as well.
I STILL purposely buy powdered laundry detergent at home. It has served me well for decades. I abhor the heavy colored plastic containers of the liquid laundry detergent. Totally unnecessary. The cardboard box of laundry powder is biodegradable.
Of course in humid Florida it keeps best in the airconditioning. But out in the garage where the washer lives, I have a dedicated puddy knife to break it back into powder when I wash clothes. Small price to pay. Cheers to you Sir!

A good 'call to arms', Tom. Many thanks for the great yarn. Yes, and interesting boats in the anchorage? You're right - sometimes, not often! We didn't see much of them, but that looked like a nice sheer on the black schooner on your quarter, and at the beginning we glimpsed a lovely low-looking vessel astern, perhaps a gorgeous, speedy Skerry Cruiser - as you're in the skerries! Keep the videos and great philosophy coming! Don't stop. Cheers, William.

My cruises might be some what more modest and my boat may be slightly smaller, but I have to agree, there is something inherently civilized about not earing off of plastic, good ceramics, and glass have a novelty all their own when used hundreds of miles from home.
And while we're at it lets get rid of those cheap disposable paper plates as well, there's nothing homey about them. And when the weather turns chill theres nothing quite loke dipping down below after watch and settling in to a hot beverage next to the fire (Tom drinks tea, I like coffee, Tom's stove burns coal, mine burns diesel) and popping your boots off putting your feet up and listening to the hull and water interact, extra credit of you add a dash of rum to the coffee!

I'm a chef. Plastic cutting boards are bad for knife blades (and not any more sanitary than hardwood). Give me a wooden cutting board any time. My favorite coffee mug is a "china mug"; heavy ceramic that "helped save the Rockland Maine Breakwater Lighthouse". Single malt [fill in your favorite brand] only in glass too. (I'm partial to the product of Speyside but Islay is good too). I have no proof but I don't think wine tastes like wine in a plastic "glass". I hadn't thought about wooden plates. When I finally get my liveaboard, I will acquire some wooden plates, thanks for the advice.

When's the autobiography coming out Tom? Or is Sailing, Yachts and Yarns the closest we'll get?

Nice idea. Sadly, there's too much I wouldn't dare to commit to paper.....

Bless you, Tom. I'm sure for a paragon of virtue such as yourself, that's not true. Best wishes.

The wood plates take up more space, more difficult to clean and will retain bacteria

David Warner actually wood is inherently antibacterial

Loved that Tom thank you. However, the irony is we are now eating plastic off wooden plates.🤔

I can't drink tea from a plastic cup, it tastes awfully! Can't understand how some people do, evendently they have no taste for tea...

I bought half a dozen wooden square plates in Maldon £ shop about 15 years ago. Great bargain and still going strong they serve as plates and bowels as one. My gaff cutter is too small for glass, I drink hot stuff out of stainless double wall mugs and G&T, wine whiskey out of nice highly polished stainless stemless double walled goblets. I don't even have a plastic bucket! They collapse too easily. I've a nice stout rubber one with heavy duty galved handle and large rims - far more comfortable to sit on.

Almost surprised you decided against square wooden plates as used in Nelson's navy. These of course gave us the old "3 square meals". Bon vent Tom!

Square plates make a lot of sense, especially when you come to stowing them. They sit nicely against a fiddle as well, but I imagine that they'might not be so easy to clean.

They make amazing utensils and disposables in bamboo. Much better than "plastic", snd they'll decompose!
I grudgingly accept plastic reusable containers, cardboard is worse.
Cardboard and paper attract insects and mold.

I'll see if I can persuade her. She's a grand onboard cook and brilliant behind the lens, but stand her up in front of it and she tends to freeze, I'm sorry to say.

Got to agree again.I have an earthenware hand made mug from the Isle of Iona and the misses has a mug from Eastwood whelpton boat yard in Norfolk. Hers has a little silicone ring on the bottom so it doesn't slide around.👍 My favourite though is my antler bone handle cheese knife from Killin in Scotland. The memories in proper cutlery/cups gives happiness every time we use them.

Mindst you I do have a plastic glass for safety when I'm having a bit of a tipple when sat in the hot tub with the good lady at home.

My wife claims that bone China is tougher than stoneware like the Denby ware, and in my experience that’s true. So congrats on your record with the Denby. But are you willing to go back to real wool fleece instead of that plastic thing you’re wearing? I know it don’t want to give up my Goretex.

I do love wool too - especially those heavy Norwegian sweaters. Nothing like them on a cold dark night. I have a Guernsey that serves me well.
