With a measuring tape draped around her neck, Wendy Mylrea moves between the many racks of frocks she has saved from the landfill.
The central Queensland- based seamstress is all about ‘upcycling’; rescuing clothes from shops that are shutting up or turning customer’s tired frocks and whipping them into something new and eye-catching.
One of her creations won last year’s ‘Fashions on the Field” at the races in Brisbane.
Ms Mylrea explains why there’s not a wedding dress or formal gown she can’t transfix into something contemporary, while customers show off their one-of-a-kind pieces.

I’m 64 and a lifelong thrifter and was blessed with a mother trained early how to sew detailed clothing. She lived through WWII and worked in very fine department stores. She married the wrong man but came from a well to do family. Despite our poverty, mom had a six sense about quality. We’d scour the local Salvation Army thrift stores and shed root out gorgeous cast asides for pennies. She would examine the seams, cut, line, and overall workmanship and find amazing pieces we wore for years. OMG, there are so many amazing things out there. I invested in a coup,e of sewing machines and - thanks to the generously of TH-cam creators, I’ve been learning to sew myself. I’ve been sourcing high quality fabrics I’ve thrifted for pennies and reclaimed. It’s been a blast and I’m ready to sell. Lots of fun and sooooo much we can reclaim into very nice pieces. Just another way to live sustainably with flair! Go for it.

I love seeing people give new life to older pieces... nice to know I'm not the only one who started young with sewing & thrifting bits and bobs as it were.

This is so creative, heartwarming, sentimental, and waste saving. Fabulous unique fashion. Congratulations Wendy. Please do more stories on creative repurposing and giving new life to things we have.

Glorious, what a talent. When I was a child, my mother made all my clothes. We need more of it. ❤

I am starting to do this with my own wardrobe. I see so many beautiful fabrics and interesting pieces at the thrift stores and I want to make one of a kind outfits for myself. Thank you for the inspiration!
