Peter Mandelson recently said that "the UK should move past the idea of a "special relationship" with the United States". I have been saying this for decades. The "Special Relationship" is one way and only ever existed in the mind of successive UK governments, fawning over something that didn't exist and in the hope that we could retain greatness by standing on the coat tails of the country with the biggest sticks and stones. It's high time that the UK started to have more respect for itself. Mandelson has had an extensive political career and as such has been part and parcel of getting the UK to the all time low it finds itself in today.

Ah, Mandelson. Boring anecdote alert. Had a meeting with him in his office, in Parliament. Early 2000’s? Me and a few other teacher trade unionists. A few minutes into the meeting, someone more interesting than us walked past his open door. Mid sentence, he jumped up and off he went never to return. We saw ourselves out. I’m sure he won’t have slept, since. Sums the fella up.

Personal (and undoubtedly influenced) views aside, the Dark Lord remains intellectually at the top of his game. Unless the coverage I saw was unrepresentative, the Harris campaign did not focus on identity politics; and Mandelson suggested the focus was on a single issue of abortion rights. That is not a matter of identity politics. It doesn't help to analyse where they went wrong if you believe false characterisations of the campaign. Obviously I could have missed a lot, but it seemed to me that it was the Republicans who wanted to present the Harris campaign as being about identity politics; which suggests that one (among many) things that the Democrats would have to work on is learning how to combat misinformation campaigns. Not that that is exactly a new problem; but the use of misinformation as a strategy is different in scale and range now.
Identity politics does matter. It is why the UK had devolution to the different countries rather than some other assortment of locations. But electorally, it is usually best to frame such matters in terms of universal interests, rights and protections that everyone can see themselves as having a share in - and not just on behalf of others whom they may or may not care about or understand. Anything else is too easy to distort. To play devil's advocate to myself, perhaps the Harris campaign was too keen to talk about abortion as a women's issue; that could have been a strategic mistake of the kind Mandelson had in mind.

Gentlemen. History, history. Never forget - or repeat. The USA has electively for a while gone back two centuries and opted for a monarch with the qualities and methods of a King of those days. So King Donald 1 it is. Hence his court - loyal - to do his bidding. But go to 1789, France. Or for England 1199 - John 1. Who....''Nonetheless, modern historians agree that he also had many faults as king, including what historian Ralph Turner describes as "distasteful, even dangerous personality traits", such as pettiness, spitefulness, and cruelty.'' John survived until 1216 a year after the billionaraires reigned him in Magna Carta.
King Donald is ripping up the US using his MAGA Carta at the bidding of the American people. And this is like 1933 Germany when the people had had enough post WW1 enough to be open to their dangerous personality. We can but hope that mortality disposes of King Donald and his acolytes without WW3. The court will remain - but their brain cells are less than the gold in their pockets. We'll see. But heads down now, gentlemen. Transactional times indeed Peter. Not trans.

The walking back from that Musk allegation would've made Michael Jackson jealous.
The thing with Mandelson here is that he's sort-of correctly identified the problem the Democrats had, but doesn't realise he's also representative of the kind of electoral issues liberal parties have been and will continue to face, and it's exemplified here by his ducking and weaving around difficult questions posed by Lewis here. People are sick of the classic model of political operation that wields cynically dishonest rhetoric towards voters, where everyone has to read between the lines of everything the politician doesn't say to figure out what their intent is, and are gravitating towards the cynically honest methods of populists that instead leave people wondering what they won't do.
People just don't have the patience anymore for diplomatically worded answers that leave as many avenues open for politicians as possible, and are now far more amenable to politicians that tell them all the wild things they want to do in an ideal world. The specifics of what you say doesn't actually mean that much anymore. Only the feeling that you want to impart. Until we figure that out we're going to keep losing to populists.
