Gemstones require extraordinary geologic circumstances to form. Not only do different minerals need to meet under the right conditions and crystallize, but certain rare elements also need to be part of the mixture for the crystal to be the right color. Tune in as Wim Vertriest, supervisor of field gemology, builds on the earth science introduced in “Geology 101 for Gemologists” to explore how alexandrite and spinel form in the earth’s crust and why pegmatites - an igneous rock that is the source of an incredible variety of gems and mineral specimens - are known as "nature's treasure chest."

A simple explanation of Valence shells helps. By moving down the number of shells increases as does the mass and size of the element.

I have a mine in Carnaiba Bahia, the 2 meter deep pegmatite produces emeralds and Alexandrites in parallel schist

It literally breaks my heart thinking of all the gems destroyed on the way to the secondary deposit that never had a chance to be found.
