Alec I actually have an idea on what to do with the gold filings that you saved so that none is wasted. Try to get a little crucible so you can melt it down, pour it out in a long string (probably make a little mold) so you basically have a gold wire. And then make a standard wood handle for the little gold knife, and carve inlay into it and lay in the gold wire! I think that would be phenomenal!
The malleability and - let's be honest - the incredible amount of satisfaction generated, really reminds me of play-doh. PS : Congrats on hitting 1M Alec !!!

Something you might consider doing with the shavings. Carve out a design in a handle, mix the gold into epoxy and fill the carving. Sand smooth and you have some beautiful gold inlay
you could do that, but the problem with melting gold the applying it to the wood is that wood starts to burn at about 150 degrees C. Gold melts just above 1050 C. This isnt ideal as it will char the wood under the gold, which will give it a flimsy foundation and eventually lead to the inlay coming out. You might lose a little bit of gold in the sanding process, but when mixed into the epoxy, at least you dont need to worry about losing all of the gold.

Not possible due to the melting points or each of the metals. Silver melts at 940 degress Celsius and platinum wouldn't even have become dull orange at that temperature. Also platinum is extremely hard to weld with other metals besides platinus metals. As for the gold/silver combo, the silver would melt into the gold over prolonged exposure to heat and you would get electrum.

not sure about this gold but yeh using some gold (or silver) to infill the makers mark wold look damn nice esp on some of his fancier more exotic blades.
Heat it to a dull red in low light and then quench it. This anneals the metal and makes it extremely malleable. This is the standard technique used by goldsmiths. Generally, you don't want to hammer on hot gold or silver. Also, you've GOT to work on a clean polished anvil with a clean polished hammer. Other than that....cheers!
Parker Brown This is so weird. I just watched your silver cup video from Three years ago earlier today. You should check out my Chanel, I make jewellery making videos (mostly rings as they’re my favourite) :)
I remember when you used to do the live show in that tiny shed of yours, when you and Sam made videos, when you went on to make your first sword. And now look at you! Look how far you've come! Congrats Alec. Keep on being awesome! Edit: Spelling
Gold does work harden, 24k however work hardens very slowly. If it is worked without annealing it will begin to stress fracture and eventually crack. Very entertaining:)
What do you mean lost?! he turned 100g of gold into a knife and a bucket of gold dust. Whatever got stuck on the sandpapper and the anvil got replaced by impurities
The whole time I was thinking, "don't take it to the belt sander, don't take it to the belt sander... please don't take it to the belt sander" and he did it the madman.
Neels Van Den Berg yeah, I would think you wouldn't ever take gold to a grinder. With steel it's cheap and readily available, so using material removal methods save time. But with rare materials? Probably would use a different forging method to retain as much of the material as possible.
Other option would be to gather up the filings (and the other contaminated material), wrap them up and mail them to Cody's Lab for some proper cross-channel-contamination ;)
I think he did do that and since its gold its pretty easy to melt it back so a solid piece and removing the impurities. Still not the greatest way of going about it cause of the residue of gold on the grinders and what doesn't gets flinged in the bucket he had under it.
Yeah, I was thinking that it would be perfectly fine to make the blade entirely with forging and leaving all the residue of the forge and anvil on the blade. Besides, doing so could presumably make a harder blade and always make a larger blade.

Alec, I'm absolutely loving your channel. The first video I watched was your katana build, but this one was a delight. The way you talked about the gold, it made me wonder if you would liken it to the playdo of the metal world.
The reason why it’s sticking is because gold doesn’t form any oxide. When that residue gets stuck to the anvil, you’re effectively “cold” welding it to itself
@@StrokeMahEgo "Sticking" != "Cold Welding".....The difference is a chemistry concept called => "Surface chemistry". There are many types of adsorption ( "sticking" to surface). One of which is "cold welding" i.e. chemically attached to the surface, and if there is an oxide layer present it's difficult to chemically attach to it (almost impossible), and the other type is in which one is just lying between the surface atoms........ Thnx for reading. *EDIT* :- By " != " I mean " not equal to" (in C++ ).
its called mokume-gane you mix two precious metal like damascus. but the metal need to be with similar propertys so you just dot melt other metal of to get enough heat to another. so with gold and steal it wont work but with silver it will
If I may advise, cold forge the gold and anneal after 75 % deformation if alloyed gold. We use this process in goldsmithing. Anneal is actually done by quench while dull red hot. We usually use due to small pieces a hand held, propane torch with small diameter, and i prefer a older style torch with a mouth piece that let s you breathe oxygen into the flame to control the temperature. It does wonders for precise small items or just partial heating of objects. P.s. can you forge Tantalum? Ta73

Your video was amazing. You’re a Very Talented Artist! I’m sure your Fiancée wears that ring with so much pride knowing that you made it just for her. Congratulations!
Gold, silver, and copper all melt at close to the same temperature, so forge welding them together should be possible. Experimenting with silver and copper is probably a good way to work out the method with less costly materials.
Egyptian weapons were made from Bronze, and no they couldnt make those weapons alone, because tin was incredibly rare. There were only two places in the whole known world at the time of ancient Egypt were you could get Tin, northern Europe, and Anatolia.
Im sure they found many ancient egyptian artifacts carved from gold. it was a very common metal back then. THey did not fight with gold weapons though, they fought with Bronze, just like everyone else, they also collapsed at the end of the Bronze age just like everyone else.
If you wanted to make something useful out of it, you could make a letter opener. You don't need or desire a sharp edge. You might be able to work harden it enough that the opener would hold its shape without bending when slitting an envelope. The biggest problem is keeping contaminating materials out of the gold. You need polished tools and working surfaces.

not sure about this gold but yeh using some gold (or silver) to infill the makers mark wold look damn nice esp on some of his fancier more exotic blades.
I was thinking neodymium, but gold on some of his prouder works would be nice.
This guy’s energy is something I can get behind 😂
You should melt the scraps into a small Steele logo pendant for yourself
A bit late, but 1:42 to 1:47 was exactly what i said when i lost my virginity
Manu Tequila 😂😂😂
Lmao
Lmao
HAHAHAA
Omg😂😂😂😂
Heat it to a dull red in low light and then quench it. This anneals the metal and makes it extremely malleable. This is the standard technique used by goldsmiths. Generally, you don't want to hammer on hot gold or silver. Also, you've GOT to work on a clean polished anvil with a clean polished hammer. Other than that....cheers!
Parker Brown This is so weird. I just watched your silver cup video from
Three years ago earlier today. You should check out my Chanel, I make jewellery making videos (mostly rings as they’re my favourite) :)
I know this is many years later, but I love how much Alec is geeking out about the way gold reacts to forging in this film.
Well this video was gold. Ha see what I did there.
CONGRATS ON THE MILLION IM SO PROUD
Are you his dad?
you never know. might i be?
Please put a clear epoxy handle on it. Maybe with some gold leaf suspended in the resin
He could use of the filings he saved
Of all the ideas on here, this is the best 🖒
Underrated comment.
That is *the* best idea I’ve seen suggested! Nice one 👍🏻
I remember when you used to do the live show in that tiny shed of yours, when you and Sam made videos, when you went on to make your first sword. And now look at you! Look how far you've come! Congrats Alec. Keep on being awesome!
Edit: Spelling
The fact that he’s so excited puts me in a good mood
Gold does work harden, 24k however work hardens very slowly. If it is worked without annealing it will begin to stress fracture and eventually crack. Very entertaining:)
Argentum Moon Jewellery reminds me of H1 steel
now you are going to clean your work shop very well😂
What did it weigh at the end and how much was lost?..
great question
What do you mean lost?! he turned 100g of gold into a knife and a bucket of gold dust. Whatever got stuck on the sandpapper and the anvil got replaced by impurities
Wijione no offense, I laughed when I read your comment because the voice in my head was saying sandpapper xD
It is truly a joy, to watch you work and be so passionate about your craft. I love your content and truly wish you the best!
Imagine how meticulously ancient jewelery was made. Pure insanity
Piece of piss by the looks of it.
Was melted down and poured into molds they didnt forge it lol
@@ghosthunter0404 upond some light reading on the subject it seems the mesopotamians were definently forging gold so...
@@ghosthunter0404 Nope. There was some casting, but most items were made by working the gold with tools and by soldering pieces together.
The whole time I was thinking, "don't take it to the belt sander, don't take it to the belt sander... please don't take it to the belt sander"
and he did it the madman.
1001101 yes but i guarantee he lost an assload to airborn particulate.
As a goldsmith, my wife had a heat attack when you put the Gold on your grinder ... lol ... she said you need a talking to ... ;)
Neels Van Den Berg yeah, I would think you wouldn't ever take gold to a grinder. With steel it's cheap and readily available, so using material removal methods save time. But with rare materials? Probably would use a different forging method to retain as much of the material as possible.
Anduril never is a really long time ... ;)
I have done it and suffered my wife's 1000 yard stare as a result
You know, I was hit with a sudden depression episode about an hour ago and only discovered your channel like, 2 days ago. anyway, I jumped on TH-cam and saw you "forging platinum" video on my suggested videos and watched it because of how excited you are about everything. the video definitely helped me smile and pull me out of my funk
I have been feeling the same lately my friend. Depressive mood swings, and it's nice when you can watch channels like this to lift your mood
Alec, I've been a subscriber since you've had 28K. Its so amazing to see all your hard work and creativity on this channel. Very proud of you for all you've done! Congratulations on 1,000,000 subscribers!!
Ryan Brodsky I was actually getting ready to comment that as well, I think it was around 24K for me. But it's amazing how much has happened so fast!
same here. It's amazing how much you've grown, Alec, not only in the craft. You've matured so much in everything and you should be very proud of what you have achieved, because you're not just like so many channels just entertainment. No, you're an example to us all, and inspire people young and old, and that is truly unique!
Yep same here. Like 26k or something.
So so proud of you! Love this video, congrats on reaching 1M subs, thank you for bringing amazing content to us every day, this doesn't get said enough but Jamie you have done an amazing job on the editing as always. Hope Alec and Jamie see this! 🔥🔨❤
Kelsey Oakes he deserves all of us and much more
Aluminium is difficult
Give it a try...
Plz try and forge aluminum
im pretty sure that the fumes of it are pretty toxic...
Dan 53s you might be thinking of zinc, aluminum doesn't fume
yeah, you are right... sorry :D
Where do you get aluminum?! Is it next to the aluminium store XD
Wijione you shut your mouth XD
Soft, cold forgeable, light on the wrist. It really looks like gold is a good starter material!
Ha ha! Great work and congratulations to 1M
Congratulations on the success. You and your team have put in countless hours of work to get here. Here's to another million!
Thanks man!
Alec Steele congrats!
And hey john! Didnt expect to see you here.
Fun fact, the stickiness of the gold is it welding to your anvil.
EJ Beerbower cold wielding
shane Flood Nope, the wold welds itself to the steel because it has very little oxidation on it’s surface.
I'm almost certain it is doing that because of the borax left over from the original pour
Long-term thought: make sure this knife ends up in your coffin, to confuse future archeologists.
You should send the dust and objects contaminated with gold to Cody’s Lab and ask if he will refine it!
Andrew Evenson yes
i very much agree
Hell yeah! Send him the grinding belt and I bet he will get some out of it
yup
Thatsa very good idea
Close your eyes and listen from 2:10 to 2:30
Stefan Stojkovski bruh lol 😅
Pervert 🤣🤣🤣
Hahahahahahaha
Hilarious!!
Hahahhq
All that filing is making me cringe
right?
I KNOW RIGHT! I WANTED TO PUT MY HANDS UNDER TO RETREIVE THE GOLD ! OMG!
You mean the sanding on the belt.
Absolute madman
He had a bucket under it though haha
So this is the guy that Bond villains go to have their weapons of choice made.
May I shake your hand, sir? Beautiful, just masterful comment. Thank you, sir.
Goldmember. Groovy, baby!
Congrats on 1mil dude!
Bobby Duke Arts oh my did not expect you to be here big fan
you should ask to make a carved handle for this knife
steve vanmol yes omg yes they need to collab on a project
Bobby wtf are you doing here 😂
Thanks man! Very grateful! Congrats yourself for the recent mill!! 🙏🙏
Polish that thing to a mirror finish! Congrats on one million!
One *RING* to *FORGE* them all
Gandalf's voice... Epic
Alec, I'm absolutely loving your channel. The first video I watched was your katana build, but this one was a delight.
The way you talked about the gold, it made me wonder if you would liken it to the playdo of the metal world.
This video seems to have more likes than any of your other videos.
You're crazy, Alec. Congratulations. Can't wait for your next project!
You're so inspiring! Hoping to meet you in person one day! Amazing work☺ Congratulations!
It's got more likes because nobody can resist the shinyness of gold
It's now at 24K ;)
The reason why it’s sticking is because gold doesn’t form any oxide. When that residue gets stuck to the anvil, you’re effectively “cold” welding it to itself
Not even a joke of him calling gold "tacky"?
But the anvils *HAS* an oxide layer, not pure metal surface. So it's not cold welding.
@@PotionsMaster666 But he said it picked up a gold sheen/coating.
The gold would then prefer to stick/cold weld to the gold sheen when hit
@@StrokeMahEgo "Sticking" != "Cold Welding".....The difference is a chemistry concept called => "Surface chemistry". There are many types of adsorption ( "sticking" to surface). One of which is "cold welding" i.e. chemically attached to the surface, and if there is an oxide layer present it's difficult to chemically attach to it (almost impossible), and the other type is in which one is just lying between the surface atoms........
Thnx for reading.
*EDIT* :- By " != " I mean " not equal to" (in C++ ).
@@PotionsMaster666 gold cold welds to itself very easily.
To those that don't know or care for the difference, it looks like it's sticking.
We want DAMASCUS GOOOOOOOLD !!! CONGRATS FOR 1M SUBS !!
it wouldnt work
its called mokume-gane you mix two precious metal like damascus. but the metal need to be with similar propertys so you just dot melt other metal of to get enough heat to another. so with gold and steal it wont work but with silver it will
Copper and gold damascus?! Or maybe silver
Ta73
by far the hardest video to sit through that you have ever posted
you have persevered through thick and thin and never even broken a sweat. there are few people who have (literally) worked as hard a you have to get to the one million subscriber mark. you so deserve it congratulations from us all
Been here since 160 thousand subs. Man I love this channel. Alec you are amazing and so inspiring to me even though you are younger. Thank you for your great content. Keep it up.
dude your crazy, gold flying all over the workshop, i could cry
Someone has got to say it. You’re*
Graham K no one needed to say just people like to.point out people's failings.
He retrieved most of it in the buckets.
Your video was amazing. You’re a Very Talented Artist! I’m sure your Fiancée wears that ring with so much pride knowing that you made it just for her. Congratulations!
Gold and silver damascus?
0KOrbU0 if it's possible that would be stunning
Gold, silver, and copper all melt at close to the same temperature, so forge welding them together should be possible. Experimenting with silver and copper is probably a good way to work out the method with less costly materials.
its called mokume-game and it is possible
needs to be done
3200 british pounds ~= 4200 usd
$4,200 usd --> $5,738 aud
$5,738 aud --> 34,432 nok
Its literally a *_butter_* knife
Mythic Cobalt budder*
Andrew Boettinger SkyDoesMinecraft always called gold, “budder”.
My god that reference takes me back...
Nostalgia
SkyDoesMinecraft would be proud-
What is the weight of this blade, and what is the weight of the filings?
When you are going to finish that knife?
Hey Alex, cool stuff man! I just recently watched a new video on King Tut’s death mask. Like 38lbs of gold, all hand crafted, 3000 years ago 😁
Abom79 silver was actually rarer at the time back at the time. All the gold was on the surface and silver you had to mine for.
Loveing it
His name is Alec
Egyptian weapons were made from Bronze, and no they couldnt make those weapons alone, because tin was incredibly rare. There were only two places in the whole known world at the time of ancient Egypt were you could get Tin, northern Europe, and Anatolia.
Im sure they found many ancient egyptian artifacts carved from gold. it was a very common metal back then. THey did not fight with gold weapons though, they fought with Bronze, just like everyone else, they also collapsed at the end of the Bronze age just like everyone else.
Hell Yeah Brother !!! I am REALLY Proud that you achieved this amazing goal !!! Much respect and congratulation, Cheers from Czech :)
a zo slovenska tiež :D
Z Polski również ;)
Adam Celadin you and Alec should do another collaboration.
You should talk to Cody's lab about doing a collab forging gold
And gold recovery from the sanding belts and files...
Hey Alec, I hope you see this comment in the sea of supportive comments that I'm sure you get. I just want to let you know that this is some of the most fun I have had watching one of your videos. I can tell just how much fun you were having testing out that gold as I'm sure everyone else could. Congrats on the 1 mil!! I'm so glad I get to be a part of this fantastic community and here's to another million!!
considering the current price of gold......... that's a very expensive little knife
Acceptable Potato I would buy it from him for 4k just cause Alec made it
what did you do with it? do you still have it?
i wanna see the handle... or how do you call it in english? maybe with silver inlays... that would be a nice contrast.
HEY ALEC! Loved that chef knife series, sooo inspiring.
That is so cool.... 😁
AGGRED
Gold and Platinum Damascus????
Congratulations sir, It is an honor to share in your excitement. Keep having fun and we will too!
He could do gold and lead but not platinum
Yasss but make it a bowie knife
I am a bench jeweler and ever since i have been watching these videos i have been wondering if you could create some kind of Damascus out of it but i do know using different karat weights does not work it does not change anything or make a pattern or anything like that
gently does it i was thinking gold and silver
2.28M now.. this channel deserves more I mean that. I enjoy every second of your videos. Thank you.
