  • AD tested positive for COVID in 2020 and it turned their world upside down. The 2nd overall pick in the 2019 WNBA draft battled the virus for nearly two years in what was diagnosed as “Long haul COVID-19.” AD feared they may lose their life. Refusing to give up, and fighting day in and day out, AD returned to the court in April 2022 for training camp with the New York Liberty. Months later AD would be traded to their hometown team - the Atlanta Dream.
We partnered with Uninterrupted to tell this compelling story of AD's return to basketball, their journey in finding themselves, and never being knocked down.
Note: Portions of this documentary were filmed before AD’s pronouns (they/them) were publicly changed. They have given permission for the content to remain.

Thanks for this, it’s so powerful to see what they’ve gone through. AD landed in the right place, through a lot of hard work and perseverance!

I love that you brought up your mom forcing you to wear dresses. That's how I grew up. My mom made me wear all those frilly girly dresses to church. I started putting my foot down in high school and still hate wearing dresses. With this new openness in the Pride movement has opened my eyes. I am definitely gender non-conforming. That was uncomfortable enough for me growing up. I couldn't imagine truly feeling like I was male and being forced into all those things. You are who you are and I love you for that!

This is really inspiring. I'm glad that more people are talking about the effects of long COVID. The family/self discovery moments were a great, unexpected addition.

Must say I had always been indifferent about AD before seeing this...now I have that much more respect for them after seeing their journey to come back to the game and beyond.

Incredible story. AD is so strong to come back from this. As a long hauler athlete myself I fully relate. This gives me so much hope. I’m grateful AD shared her story. All the best to AD and anyone else struggling with long haul.
