Steven Ellis, 'The All-But King of Ireland: The Great Earl of Kildare'

  • A keynote lecture delivered in the Edmund Burke Theatre, Trinity College Dublin, by Professor Steven Ellis, Head of History, NUI, Galway entitled 'The "Great Earl" of Kildare'. The lecture examines the mythology surrounding the career of the 'Great Earl' of Kildare with focus on the conflict between his posthumous reputation in the early ears of the Irish Free State and his unacknowledged legacy of expanding English rule. After a brief introduction by Professor Seán Duffy, Professor Ellis is introduced by the Provost of Trinity College Dublin, Dr Patrick Prendergast.

    The great Earl was a master of duplicity and diplomacy it would seem, keeping some Chieftans on side while plundering the land of others and keeping the Crown on side all the while! Fascinating insight into this crucial point in Irish history where English power was at a tipping point. Of course , we all know what ensued in the years after this but the relations between the New English, Old English and native Irish was more finely balanced at this point than i had realised.
