This brings memories, use to watch these cartoons in the1960s before leaving for school.

Exactly! The ones we saw with Farmer Gray were silents - we all complained in 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, when we got to school, that they were so primitive. We'd no idea they'd been made before our parents were born!

They were still feeling their way, and they have a ways to go, toward their greatest creation, Mighty Mouse. Despite some crudities, when all this bears fruit it will be well worth it.
For a Mighty Mouse fan like myself, and a Terrytoon fan too, this is incredibly interesting. It is a great post.

Oil Can Harry in this cartoon became Mighty Mouse's regular nemesis.

Even through TerryToons is overlooked today by classic animation fans for being formulaic and cheap,it can pull out unforgettable gems such as this.

i dont really know very much about animation or its history, but i love the old terrytoons. there's just something about them, especially the early silent farmer alfalfa/gray ones. maybe their lack of polish is what appeals to me.

Fannie Zilch singing voice sound just like Pearl Pureheart's and J. Leffingwell Strongheart's singing voice sounds like Mighty Mouse's.

Never seen this short, but thank goodness they used the bumpers from "Farmer Alfalfa and his Terrytoons Pals" TV show. I remember seeing these on TH-cam, but it is gone. I hope they should find the opening and closing to this show soon.

Originally seen on the syndicated "FARMER ALFALFA AND HIS TERRYTOON PALS" in the 1958-'59 season (as the bumpers indicate). The opening theme, "The Villain Still Pursued Her", was indeed used again in the very first Mighty Mouse "musical mellerdrama", "A Fight to the Finish" (1947).

Terrytoons is probably my favorite classic cartoon studio, unpopular opinion maybe 😉

What's interesting is the Fleischer Studios attempted to imitate this format in several mid period Betty Boop cartoons using "Fearless Fred" and "Phillip the Fiend" in these mellow drama parodies. Terrytoons did a better job in terms of humor and content as you can see.

Yes but in what pulp story and in what author did they get the idea for the fanny zilch and oil can Harry cartoons of the early thirties I think that it was Jack London of whom they got the ideas for these.cartoons of the thirties please tell me if I am right on all counts on the question

Despite TerryToons being formulaic and workmanlike,This was Paul Terry’s attempt to be more creative by making an operatic cartoon, before the Mighty Mouse cartoons started to be unique and creative with its formula by using opera for its dialogue and musical score starting with 1945’s Mighty Mouse and The Pirates.

I always thought Deputy Dawg was Terrytoons greatest creation. Opinions differ.
