I embraced atheism over 7 years ago, but before the first week of this lent something that is not of this world happened. Now all I think about is the Catholic faith. I was extremely depressed and tired of living for quite some time. I took my dog for a walk one morning, and I looked to the sky and said. “I want to be with God.” Instantly, My heart felt like hands were hugging it with a beautiful vibration and I felt so many different feelings. It felt like swirling energy surrounded my heart. It felt like a rush of water was shooting out of it. My eyes were extremely watery, and they were pouring down like tears but they weren’t regular tears. This went on for about 30 to 45 seconds. I’m 42 and in All my life I have never felt such bliss. For about two weeks my heart felt like it was lit on fire like the one in the picture of Jesus. I went to church a couple of weeks ago and I was praying for forgiveness of all the birds I killed when I was a kid with a BB gun. Right when I was done praying a bird flew in the church, and people were trying to get it out. A few other things have happened but I’m telling you, God is very, very real. Just two months ago I was insulting those who believe in God anytime God was mentioned and now I’m one of those people who can’t stop talking about Catholicism. I feel like a completely different person. Looking back I don’t even relate in any way to that guy I was. I was raised Catholic, but turned my back on the church. Over 7 years ago I witnessed a fatal accident and it really took me down a dark path. Before lent all my comments toward people who believe in God were hateful, and now I’m still trying to delete them. God Bless!

A lot of westerners have only experienced an inherited Christian culture (without necessarily understanding its connection to the Gospel) and do not appreciate the pillars of western civilization fortified by generations of faithful Christians. As an Catholic Indian immigrant to New Zealand, raised in the Middle East, I've been blessed to perceive these cultural differences that are intrinsically tied to the religious fabric of a the local populace. It may be as mundane as holding the door for the person behind you. (regardless of socio-economic status) Western culture isn't a product of a "superior white race", the renaissance, or scientific materialism; it's Catholicism.
The Brehon laws were also eventually informed by Christian beliefs too. I don't think Christianity slowed the progress of Ireland. The monasteries became powerhouses of learning and art that were famed across Europe. People came here from all over to learn there. Also, that isn't to say that some pagan things weren't kept in the Brehon laws. Some where. In fact, I think that some of these actually had a negative effect on Gaelic society in some places - the brehon laws regarding marriage etc. I think that from the lives of the nobility at a stage you can see that society was in confusion towards the later middle ages. However, this was also the time of increased English pressure. I don't deny that the Brehon laws had many advantages and positive aspects. It was a remarkable system that developed quite early on in Irish society.

What happened in Ireland is that the people were sacramentalised but not evangelised. The faith of the majority was swept away by the scandals of the Church and secularisation, it was a 'massive' apostasy and the institutional church lost any moral authority. The country is left with a much smaller church that is going through a renewal - but it is mostly a grassroots movement with a few good priests. The Church is unwilling or unable to respond.
The Church in Ireland has been run by cowards for a long time, evident in the unjust expulsions of good priests from Maynooth for exposing corrupt priests. When thing like that are allowed to fly, then it will eventually bring down the whole Church.
I wonder how we got here, for millenia people lived the faith, how come catholics today (in catholic majority countries) are so alienated and ignorant about their own faith?
The Church started with 12 men. Remember, YOU are the Church! It is up to YOU to spread the Gospel! To act as a witness for Christ! Ireland helped to carry the Church, indeed Western Civilization, by leading simple and pius lives with the help of a few good monasteries and priests doing their jobs to retain priceless manuscripts, educating the people and offering up the Holy Sacrifice to the faithful. It is going to take a few good men who defend our Lord with love and charity!

As an Irishman who came back to my faith over the last couple of years and a lot more strongly, I hope others seek The Lord more fervently here. We can bring it back to a respectable level if we all come together against evil.
I'm also Irish but I don't see any hope for the country, it will hit rock bottom I am afraid, not until people become extremely sad, depressed, lonely and many other negative emotions will they soul Search, Ireland has to become that state of a country before people will look to faith. It is depressing but its our reality.

I was taught by Irish Christian brothers way back in the 1960's/1070's and I was treated appallingly, together with all the other Catholic boys of my generation.... I was delighted to separate myself entirely from the Church because of the abuse, both sexual and by beating abuse done by these men. The Church in Ireland needs to do decades of penance for its actions, including laundries and the convents 'looking after' young babies.
How did the church get so corrupt in Ireland? So focused on beatings and punishment to the living and also hiding abusers and full of abusers? I was thinking maybe as Ireland was so badly abused for centuries that this caused people abused to grow up sick and become abusers more on average including within the church? But I am unsure.
I was taught by Patrician Brothers in a Catholic school in Co Tipperary in the 50s and 60s. Apart from over use of the cane for not knowing the answers to questions there was no abuse at all. And I got a very good education too.
I’ll keep Ireland in my prayers. It is one of my ancestral motherlands, and this along with all the other struggles Ireland has faced over the centuries makes me both weep and hopeful.

Yes, it is the same in most of the West. Bishops and Priests stopped being Christian and embraced the religion of liberalism with a Christian language. It is called Second Vatican Council. This dishonest religion was dishonestly pushed to the faithful, who preferred the true liberalism to the fake Catholic liberalism, the original to the copy. Then, Bishops and priests proved that they didn't believe in any of Catholic doctrine by withdrawing Mass and Eucharist for months and months. It's not that there wasn't martyrdom or resistance, it's that they didn't protest at all. They became middle managers of the government, the most faithful civil servants.
@@derechoplano no there were good priests who at least provided Holy Communion to the faithful. Most if not all were reported to our police force in Ireland. There were also clandestine Masses. We were not deprived but owing to the climate in Ireland these Masses could not be made public. It was the politicians in power who tried to quash religious worship.

i live in Moanghan and during Easter 2021 because every single church in the Republic of Ireland was closed it left me and my mother having to illegally cross the border into Northern Ireland to go to Mass in a place called Roslea in Fermanagh because churches were open in the North

My prayers for you, Roisín. As I'm sure you are well aware, St. Patrick's, Maynooth, the main seminary, instead of forming priests both morally and intellectually, is doing neither, but is instead largely encouraging sexual immorality, homosexuality and wokeism among seminarians. The trickle-down effect is in schools, where catechism is so watered down and boring that students get totally bored, and in families, who go to Mass and hear the pathetic excuses for homilies - no teaching, no scholarship, so challenge to amend our lives and work for our final Salvation - nothing! No wonder the Churches are empty, except for a dwindling number of truly heroic parishes with priests who are true, godly Fathers, given fully to their family and leading them by example. I pray every day for the re-conversion of my native land. Please encourage young Irish men, who feel a calling to be priests, to go abroad, to a true Catholic seminary. God help them if Maynooth is all they have.

As a catholic, I see that certain "christians" may use that idea as an excuse to shut themselves from any rationality, truth and goodness that comes from pious people and focus completely on their own subjective and hyper individualistic view of God so be careful when using that argument.

@@glennlanham6309 I think it is a problem in the West in general . Catholicism and Christianity in general is booming in Africa and India . It seemed to do well in places where it is persecuted and was always strong in Poland under Communism . My worry is that as these countries become more Westernised ( which on one level is great ) they will become more secular . The church and abuse scandals and cover ups have damaged the church's standing so much .
There is every hope for the Church in Ireland. Some 4 years ago I fractured a small bone in my foot and it had to be put in plaster. Being confined to the house I started to pray the 15 mysteries of the Rosary every day. The day after the 9th day was a Sunday and I was able to attend Mass here in Dublin Ireland where I live. As the penitential rite of the Mass commenced I felt as if a door or veil opened sideways in my heart. A spiritual fire came flowing down from the Tabernacle and penetrated through my chest into my heart. I lost the sensation of the weight of my physical body and found myself burning in what I can only describe as a fire of Love and Life itself and the joy and peace of those few moments cannot be adequately described in human words. God is love itself and He is working very powerfully but also silently and without any fuss whatever. Yes, Jesus is truly present in person in the Holy Eucharist. Open your hearts to Him, spend time with Him and talk to Him as you would to a good friend. He made time for me and He has time for you also. As for Ireland, read about the last vision of St. Patrick regarding Ireland and do not lose hope. God bless you all.

As a priest, I think much of the problem rest in the simple word Conversion of heart. Our faith is not just obedience to a religion, it is fundamentally a relationship with Jesus Christ.
I grew up catholic in Ireland and like many young ones, turned away from it. Didnt understand what the point was and was dragged to church on a Sunday until I was old enough to say no. Funny it was a woman I met in Canada, her ancestor is a protestant from Cavan that got me back into it and understanding you need to read the bible. We were never encouraged to do this in all the years I had as a kid going to church. Ive since learned more from traditional channels like Sensus Fidelium and Father Ripperger than I ever did previously. If there were more men like Fr Ripperger leading in the church I feel we could see people listening. Theres much more to this life than money and entertainment but we have been fed a watered down version of the Catholicism to suit modernity. From my yet limited understanding, the slip started from Vatican 2. It allowed them in and we see the result today, a brainwashed youth who think we have "progress". What is Ireland today? Im 28 so I'm not an old boomer complaining about the good old days lol. The church needs men to lead.

@ed7002 yes big tech, media, infiltration of education establishments and the fallout from abuse took its toll, but they are big players for this destruction, have a look at the English reading list for junior and secondary schools 2021 and you will understand why the church had to be removed. Degradation of young minds is a Communist dream machine. There is more to this than meets the eye. The TLM is increasing with a growth in young men for the priesthood and it's congregation. But it is rumoured that this will be shut down. So you see there is a big agenda at play.
Sounds a LOT like the state of catholicism in Spain: watered down. It looks like we have to be ashamed of having once been home to many great saints. It has more to do with marxism, pretty evident in our civil war. But this new ideological program established slowly throughout the past 30 years has proven to be much more effective. As a Protestant I feel we share a similar empathy for seeing this world becoming less and less influenced by Christ and our countries in the west are apostatized from Christ and a Christocentric worldview. I am grieved.
As a Protestant from the North I totally agree! It's a shame and what's worse evenone just shrugs their shoulders like what can ye do. They get angre if you say that worldview should be more aggressive etc. I mean actually attacking a false worldviews etc. It's infuriating!

@@The12thSeahorse It is only 40 , 50 and certainly 60 years ago that Ireland had so many priests many went to work abroad . I live in England and in the 1970s there were so many Irish priests . They werent just descendants of Irish parents , they had been born in Ireland up until the late 1950s and had Irish accents but opted to leave their families and come here and minister to us . The last one to do that was probably in the early 1980s and most of the ones we have left are in their 70s and 80s and retired from active ministry .

i finally went to the land of my fathers, Ireland in 2016. Been to 34 countries but never found one that was so anti-catholic. All radio stations 24/7 blaring out a tirade of hate against the church- didn't have this in China or vietnam

I have just now found god again after many years of just not believing. I lost my grandma who helped raise me, then my mother 7 months later. The 2 women I loved the most besides my wife. 12 hours after losing my mother I just went to church. Something was calling me there. I walked in and started crying from the overwhelming feeling. I sat away from everybody. Out of nowhere and older couple walks in and sits right in front of me, without even looking at me the lady said “you’re a new face” she introduced herself and husband (Karen and mark) she must’ve known I was crying because she just put her hand on me and no other words were said. I felt like everything read from scripture that day was targeted towards me. Just a surreal feeling. My journey has just now started.

I am a RW &B American, but since becoming a rugby fan, in 2014, and the reputation for being a solid Catholic nation, my heart has clung to Ireland, I even found a Irish radio station I can listen to daily. Sadly, the past three years, with the complete decline in morels, like what is going on here in my homeland, I continue to be a Irish rugby fan, but the country needs our prayers and I have lost heart for her.

There's a tremendous well of grace in God's heart for the Irish. They loved Him and lived His example for centuries. As Pope Benedict said Irish monk missionaries converted and later saved Christianity in Europe. In the 1800- mid-1900s Irish missionary priests preached and served the Church in the USA, Australia, Canada.
Something occurred to me earlier today, as I listened to an apologist saying that it is up to men - the fathers of families - to teach the faith to children and to lead them towards Jesus. Yet, the impression that has always been given is that in Ireland it has been the mothers who gathered the children together, took them to Mass, pushed the boys towards the priesthood etc. Could this contrast have anything to do with the collapse of Catholicism in Ireland?
I think also we are facing a different enemy. Christianity and believing in jesus is seen as ridiculous, embarrassing, moronic, something to be mocked and bullied and targeted and humiliated for. People just aren't willing to associate themselves with something that is going to make people laugh at them about. There is no respect for jesus or Christianity. The mindset is "This is is stupid I can't see any value in it so I'm not going to let you get away with believing this rubbish - it's my right to mock you I am doing nothing wrong, cos if you're stupid enough to believe in this then you deserve to get mocked". This is what I feel is facing Christianity in the west and what is the most subversive enemy. You can see this in all anti theists and even apatheistic people. They just think its stupid and have contempt for people that believe in it. So we need to face being laughed at and mocked before we can get people to church.
If you think of Christians in the first 3 centuries. They were not just mocked, they were publicly tortured and killed. The earliest depiction of Jesus on the cross is a piece of graffiti showing Jesus as a donkey. Even despite that, Christians were able to grow in numbers. Christians could handle it, and still spread the faith and gain new believers, even under this severe oppression. Mockery should not be enough.

I think some of the targeting comes from the fact that kids are brainwashed into believing something they have no control over. If your religion is so believable they will be able to accept it when they are old enough. But we know that they won't be as susceptible to brain washing when they are older. The most progressive and peaceful countries in the world are the ones that are leaving religion behind. I'm not saying religion does not have a place in the world. It has done many good things but the only way you will get an otherwise good person to do evil is by saying their God commands it

This is a very frank, honest and accurate analysis of the situation that existed in Ireland and I suspect in other places as well. Many Catholics have a poor intellectual understanding of their Faith. This has meant that it has become insipid for them as they have been unable to answer questions both for themselves and other people. This seems at odds with the thoughts of the Council in the 60swhich thought we were developing a Catholic generation of articulate, spiritually interested, religiously thirsty Catholics. The opposite has been the case .Moreover, the power of western secular culture has influenced many Catholics as much as it has influenced millions of others. People suggest we have lost two generations to the Church and are heading for a third. We Sacramentalise thousands each year. Many are poorly Catechised and poorly Evangelised with the result that Sacraments often become important social occasions which are outgrown and gently placed aside as irrelevant, childlike, non essential. What will be the situation in the Catholic Church in twenty or thirty years when the older generation has died? I feel it will continue to decline as it has in so many other European countries and is happening in North America. The scandals did not help and we shall bear the pain for a hundred years. However, the declaration be started in the 60s with a growing indifference. Add to that a growing absence of the need for God, religion and the moral certainties of the past and we see a continuous decline that is growing at wharp speed. I find it interesting that the story of Sodom and Gomorrah might be applied to our current age when huge moral changes often perceived as a new form of tolerance and progress seem to affect some of the absolute pillars of our traditional beliefs: the sanctity of life from womb to tomb, the value of the family and marriage, the acceptance that the sexuality given us is given by a God who makes us in his image, the values and guidelines of the Commandments. Our secular western culture seems determined to gradually change all this and more besides. Are we in the age of Babylon or Sodom and Gomorrah? We are living in interesting times!!! Notice that to to out of step with the new tolerance is to find you may be treated with great intolerance. Being out of step takes great courage and moral conviction.
There's also still the issue of the Papal bull granting permission to England to invade without repurcussions from the Vatican - the most powerful army in Europe at that time. We have long memories lol.
What a great video and very disturbing to me as a Catholic in England . The church in Ireland which had still existed against the threat of great persecution 400 hundred years ago when worship was illegal under the pain of death for these holy priests and people and which was the author of it's own downfall to some extent . As the guy being interviewed said , because it was held in such high esteem it had much further to fall and what was all the m ore shocking is the short space of time it happened in . They say ' every cloud has a silver lining ' so perhaps some good will come from this in the form of a simpler and renewed church . We should also remember how many priests from Ireland went around the world evangelising and bringing the faith to Africa particularly and went to places like the USA , Australia , Canada , New Zealand and the UK and in fact any part of the English speaking world where Irish people had emigrated to . Ireland has almost become a mission territory itself now .

He's an ex Muslim atheist but he highlights a lot of Christian suffering and disenfranchisement in the Muslim world particularly in Pakistan where his family are from. He's also an aussie so I'm sure you two would have loads to talk about! But yeah I think we in the west need to speak out more about the suffering of Christians (and other minorities) in places where there is no religious freedom and where minorities are bullied rather than protected. I went to a school run by Irish Palotine Priests in the 2000s. Good men of God, and quite patient with my atheism. Sadly some of them were martyrized in 1976. May God bless their souls in heaven.

One thing that is profoundly different in European cultures compared especially to the American one (I don't know the Australian): the American culture has competition engrained in its DNA, with all its good and bad results. And European cultures don't. So for an American it's normal to try to attract people to his or her point of view about religion - it's something you usually don't do in Europe. Not on the streets. Not among friends. Not even in Church. Sad but true. And if you're not equipped with rational arguments for your faith - why practice them, you don't use them anyhow - a lack of intellectualism is the logical result.

I tried bringing a boys retreat group to Ireland a few years back. It would have been free of charge with an aim to help young Irish boys be stronger Catholics. I contacted several dioceses and archdioceses and never heard anything from them.
Probably because the priests and bishops feared you'd be robbing them of their bum-boys. The sooner all priests are dead and all religion vanished there is no hope for humanity.
The whole idea of a mass rock is interesting because that was actually how at least Germanic Heathens would give offerings to the Gods. It's called a hurg and it's basically a big flat rock in the middle of a sacred grove, usually near a sacred tree or well. There's something I can appreciate about that almost coming full-circle, as well as empathize with because like Irish Catholic mass these sacrifices started out as large public festivals, like I've heard there was an account where once a year the river Thames would overflow with swords, but then during the conversion they became very private and secretive things as the attendants would have been in fear for their lives. I'm glad that barring covid regulations both Catholics and Heathens can now publicly observe our faiths.

Depends on which european country we are talking about. Different things are happening to the church in different european countries. In Ireland everything is decreasing, but in Poland churches are being built and in 2016 Jesus Christ was officially crowned king of the country with the participation of the president. Not everywhere has a dark outlook and this is just one examples of two different ways
When I see that happening in the west I see how my country (Brazil) differs much, in the US and EU people are leaving the church to be secular, while here people left the church for being soft in social issues, so they became evangelical. Instead of becoming secular, we are becoming a protestant country.

I embraced atheism over 7 years ago, but before the first week of this lent something that is not of this world happened. Now all I think about is the Catholic faith. I was extremely depressed and tired of living for quite some time. I took my dog for a walk one morning, and I looked to the sky and said. “I want to be with God.” Instantly, My heart felt like hands were hugging it with a beautiful vibration and I felt so many different feelings. It felt like swirling energy surrounded my heart. It felt like a rush of water was shooting out of it. My eyes were extremely watery, and they were pouring down like tears but they weren’t regular tears. This went on for about 30 to 45 seconds. I’m 42 and in All my life I have never felt such bliss. For about two weeks my heart felt like it was lit on fire like the one in the picture of Jesus. I went to church a couple of weeks ago and I was praying for forgiveness of all the birds I killed when I was a kid with a BB gun. Right when I was done praying a bird flew in the church, and people were trying to get it out. A few other things have happened but I’m telling you, God is very, very real. Just two months ago I was insulting those who believe in God anytime God was mentioned and now I’m one of those people who can’t stop talking about Catholicism. I feel like a completely different person. Looking back I don’t even relate in any way to that guy I was.
I was raised Catholic, but turned my back on the church. Over 7 years ago I witnessed a fatal accident and it really took me down a dark path. Before lent all my comments toward people who believe in God were hateful, and now I’m still trying to delete them. God Bless!

A lot of westerners have only experienced an inherited Christian culture (without necessarily understanding its connection to the Gospel) and do not appreciate the pillars of western civilization fortified by generations of faithful Christians. As an Catholic Indian immigrant to New Zealand, raised in the Middle East, I've been blessed to perceive these cultural differences that are intrinsically tied to the religious fabric of a the local populace. It may be as mundane as holding the door for the person behind you. (regardless of socio-economic status) Western culture isn't a product of a "superior white race", the renaissance, or scientific materialism; it's Catholicism.
The Brehon laws were also eventually informed by Christian beliefs too. I don't think Christianity slowed the progress of Ireland. The monasteries became powerhouses of learning and art that were famed across Europe. People came here from all over to learn there. Also, that isn't to say that some pagan things weren't kept in the Brehon laws. Some where. In fact, I think that some of these actually had a negative effect on Gaelic society in some places - the brehon laws regarding marriage etc. I think that from the lives of the nobility at a stage you can see that society was in confusion towards the later middle ages. However, this was also the time of increased English pressure.
I don't deny that the Brehon laws had many advantages and positive aspects. It was a remarkable system that developed quite early on in Irish society.

What happened in Ireland is that the people were sacramentalised but not evangelised. The faith of the majority was swept away by the scandals of the Church and secularisation, it was a 'massive' apostasy and the institutional church lost any moral authority. The country is left with a much smaller church that is going through a renewal - but it is mostly a grassroots movement with a few good priests. The Church is unwilling or unable to respond.
The Church in Ireland has been run by cowards for a long time, evident in the unjust expulsions of good priests from Maynooth for exposing corrupt priests. When thing like that are allowed to fly, then it will eventually bring down the whole Church.
I wonder how we got here, for millenia people lived the faith, how come catholics today (in catholic majority countries) are so alienated and ignorant about their own faith?

As an Irishman who came back to my faith over the last couple of years and a lot more strongly, I hope others seek The Lord more fervently here. We can bring it back to a respectable level if we all come together against evil.
I'm also Irish but I don't see any hope for the country, it will hit rock bottom I am afraid, not until people become extremely sad, depressed, lonely and many other negative emotions will they soul Search, Ireland has to become that state of a country before people will look to faith. I was taught by Irish Christian brothers way back in the 1960's/1070's and I was treated appallingly, together with all the other Catholic boys of my generation.... I was delighted to separate myself entirely from the Church because of the abuse, both sexual and by beating abuse done by these men. The Church in Ireland needs to do decades of penance for its actions, including laundries and the convents 'looking after' young babies.
How did the church get so corrupt in Ireland? So focused on beatings and punishment to the living and also hiding abusers and full of abusers? I was thinking maybe as Ireland was so badly abused for centuries that this caused people abused to grow up sick and become abusers more on average including within the church? But I am unsure.
I was taught by Patrician Brothers in a Catholic school in Co Tipperary in the 50s and 60s. Apart from over use of the cane for not knowing the answers to questions there was no abuse at all. And I got a very good education too.
I’ll keep Ireland in my prayers. It is one of my ancestral motherlands, and this along with all the other struggles Ireland has faced over the centuries makes me both weep and hopeful.

What happened in Ireland? Bishops and Priests stopped being Catholic, it is that simple. Over the last 15 months in Ireland the message has been very clear that the Mass and Eucharist was not essential and we could get mass on TV .
Yes, it is the same in most of the West. Bishops and Priests stopped being Christian and embraced the religion of liberalism with a Christian language. It is called Second Vatican Council. This dishonest religion was dishonestly pushed to the faithful, who preferred the true liberalism to the fake Catholic liberalism, the original to the copy.
Then, Bishops and priests proved that they didn't believe in any of Catholic doctrine by withdrawing Mass and Eucharist for months and months. It's not that there wasn't martyrdom or resistance, it's that they didn't protest at all. They became middle managers of the government, the most faithful civil servants.

@@derechoplano no there were good priests who at least provided Holy Communion to the faithful. Most if not all were reported to our police force in Ireland. There were also clandestine Masses. We were not deprived but owing to the climate in Ireland these Masses could not be made public. It was the politicians in power who tried to quash religious worship.

i live in Moanghan and during Easter 2021 because every single church in the Republic of Ireland was closed it left me and my mother having to illegally cross the border into Northern Ireland to go to Mass in a place called Roslea in Fermanagh because churches were open in the North

My prayers for you, Roisín. As I'm sure you are well aware, St. Patrick's, Maynooth, the main seminary, instead of forming priests both morally and intellectually, is doing neither, but is instead largely encouraging sexual immorality, homosexuality and wokeism among seminarians. The trickle-down effect is in schools, where catechism is so watered down and boring that students get totally bored, and in families, who go to Mass and hear the pathetic excuses for homilies - no teaching, no scholarship, so challenge to amend our lives and work for our final Salvation - nothing! No wonder the Churches are empty, except for a dwindling number of truly heroic parishes with priests who are true, godly Fathers, given fully to their family and leading them by example. I pray every day for the re-conversion of my native land. Please encourage young Irish men, who feel a calling to be priests, to go abroad, to a true Catholic seminary. God help them if Maynooth is all they have.

It seemed to do well in places where it is persecuted and was always strong in Poland under Communism . My worry is that as these countries become more Westernised ( which on one level is great ) they will become more secular . There is every hope for the Church in Ireland. Some 4 years ago I fractured a small bone in my foot and it had to be put in plaster. Being confined to the house I started to pray the 15 mysteries of the Rosary every day. The day after the 9th day was a Sunday and I was able to attend Mass here in Dublin Ireland where I live. As the penitential rite of the Mass commenced I felt as if a door or veil opened sideways in my heart. A spiritual fire came flowing down from the Tabernacle and penetrated through my chest into my heart. I lost the sensation of the weight of my physical body and found myself burning in what I can only describe as a fire of Love and Life itself and the joy and peace of those few moments cannot be adequately described in human words. God is love itself and He is working very powerfully but also silently and without any fuss whatever. Yes, Jesus is truly present in person in the Holy Eucharist. Open your hearts to Him, spend time with Him and talk to Him as you would to a good friend. He made time for me and He has time for you also. As for Ireland, read about the last vision of St. Patrick regarding Ireland and do not lose hope. God bless you all.

As a priest, I think much of the problem rest in the simple word Conversion of heart.
Our faith is not just obedience to a religion, it is fundamentally a relationship with Jesus Christ.
I grew up catholic in Ireland and like many young ones, turned away from it. Didnt understand what the point was and was dragged to church on a Sunday until I was old enough to say no. Funny it was a woman I met in Canada, her ancestor is a protestant from Cavan that got me back into it and understanding you need to read the bible. We were never encouraged to do this in all the years I had as a kid going to church.
Ive since learned more from traditional channels like Sensus Fidelium and Father Ripperger than I ever did previously. If there were more men like Fr Ripperger leading in the church I feel we could see people listening. Theres much more to this life than money and entertainment but we have been fed a watered down version of the Catholicism to suit modernity. From my yet limited understanding, the slip started from Vatican 2. It allowed them in and we see the result today, a brainwashed youth who think we have "progress". What is Ireland today? Im 28 so I'm not an old boomer complaining about the good old days lol. The church needs men to lead.

Whatever did happen it was very quick and very visible. 15-20 years ago when I was a kid there would be over 1000 people at each of several Christmas masses at my parish, this year there wasn’t even close to 100.
Not only that……I was reading a religious article on Ireland 🇮🇪 a couple of years ago…..stating for that year, there’s was only one ordination (one ordination for the whole of Ireland…..I thought to myself…..gee….that’s pretty bad!).

@@The12thSeahorse It is only 40 , 50 and certainly 60 years ago that Ireland had so many priests many went to work abroad . I live in England and in the 1970s there were so many Irish priests . They werent just descendants of Irish parents , they had been born in Ireland up until the late 1950s and had Irish accents but opted to leave their families and come here and minister to us . The last one to do that was probably in the early 1980s and most of the ones we have left are in their 70s and 80s and retired from active ministry .

i finally went to the land of my fathers, Ireland in 2016. Been to 34 countries but never found one that was so anti-catholic. All radio stations 24/7 blaring out a tirade of hate against the church- didn't have this in China or vietnam

Even the Archbishop of Dublin at the time said that Ireland "wasn't ready for a papal visit"...which translates as, if this guy were to show his face in Ireland after what's just been uncovered, particularly about his role in covering up abuse, there'd likely be protests and demonstrations that'd spoil our little get together. They feared getting a (deserved) bad reaction and so he stayed away.

I am really sorry 😞 for Ireland , l was brought up by an Irish Nun Sister Alphonso Burns late in 1964.She has two brothers Father Patrick and Father Jim who was ordained in Mary Help of Christian Cathedral in North East lndia ,Meghalaya. I have just now found god again after many years of just not believing. I lost my grandma who helped raise me, then my mother 7 months later. The 2 women I loved the most besides my wife. 12 hours after losing my mother I just went to church. Something was calling me there. I walked in and started crying from the overwhelming feeling. I sat away from everybody. Out of nowhere and older couple walks in and sits right in front of me, without even looking at me the lady said “you’re a new face” she introduced herself and husband (Karen and mark) she must’ve known I was crying because she just put her hand on me and no other words were said. I felt like everything read from scripture that day was targeted towards me. Just a surreal feeling. My journey has just now started.
I am a hermit frm the Philippines since 1995. And I'm looking for an abandoned monastery that I can stay and take care of. Would Ireland be open for the idea of me living my eremitic life there? I can be a living witness of the presence of God there.

I am a RW &B American, but since becoming a rugby fan, in 2014, and the reputation for being a solid Catholic nation, my heart has clung to Ireland, I even found a Irish radio station I can listen to daily. Sadly, the past three years, with the complete decline in morels, like what is going on here in my homeland, I continue to be a Irish rugby fan, but the country needs our prayers and I have lost heart for her.

There's a tremendous well of grace in God's heart for the Irish. They loved Him and lived His example for centuries. As Pope Benedict said Irish monk missionaries converted and later saved Christianity in Europe. In the 1800- mid-1900s Irish missionary priests preached and served the Church in the USA, Australia, Canada.
Something occurred to me earlier today, as I listened to an apologist saying that it is up to men - the fathers of families - to teach the faith to children and to lead them towards Jesus.
Yet, the impression that has always been given is that in Ireland it has been the mothers who gathered the children together, took them to Mass, pushed the boys towards the priesthood etc.
Could this contrast have anything to do with the collapse of Catholicism in Ireland?
I think also we are facing a different enemy. Christianity and believing in jesus is seen as ridiculous, embarrassing, moronic, something to be mocked and bullied and targeted and humiliated for. People just aren't willing to associate themselves with something that is going to make people laugh at them about. There is no respect for jesus or Christianity. The mindset is "This is is stupid I can't see any value in it so I'm not going to let you get away with believing this rubbish - it's my right to mock you I am doing nothing wrong, cos if you're stupid enough to believe in this then you deserve to get mocked". This is what I feel is facing Christianity in the west and what is the most subversive enemy. You can see this in all anti theists and even apatheistic people. They just think its stupid and have contempt for people that believe in it. So we need to face being laughed at and mocked before we can get people to church.

If you think of Christians in the first 3 centuries. They were not just mocked, they were publicly tortured and killed. The earliest depiction of Jesus on the cross is a piece of graffiti showing Jesus as a donkey. Even despite that, Christians were able to grow in numbers. Christians could handle it, and still spread the faith and gain new believers, even under this severe oppression.

I think some of the targeting comes from the fact that kids are brainwashed into believing something they have no control over. If your religion is so believable they will be able to accept it when they are old enough. But we know that they won't be as susceptible to brain washing when they are older. The most progressive and peaceful countries in the world are the ones that are leaving religion behind. I'm not saying religion does not have a place in the world. It has done many good things but the only way you will get an otherwise good person to do evil is by saying their God commands it

This is a very frank, honest and accurate analysis of the situation that existed in Ireland and I suspect in other places as well. Many Catholics have a poor intellectual understanding of their Faith. This has meant that it has become insipid for them as they have been unable to answer questions both for themselves and other people. This seems at odds with the thoughts of the Council in the 60swhich thought we were developing a Catholic generation of articulate, spiritually interested, religiously thirsty Catholics. The opposite has been the case .Moreover, the power of western secular culture has influenced many Catholics as much as it has influenced millions of others. People suggest we have lost two generations to the Church and are heading for a third. We Sacramentalise thousands each year. Many are poorly Catechised and poorly Evangelised with the result that Sacraments often become important social occasions which are outgrown and gently placed aside as irrelevant, childlike, non essential. What will be the situation in the Catholic Church in twenty or thirty years when the older generation has died? I feel it will continue to decline as it has in so many other European countries and is happening in North America. The scandals did not help and we shall bear the pain for a hundred years. However, the declaration be started in the 60s with a growing indifference. Add to that a growing absence of the need for God, religion and the moral certainties of the past and we see a continuous decline that is growing at wharp speed. I find it interesting that the story of Sodom and Gomorrah might be applied to our current age when huge moral changes often perceived as a new form of tolerance and progress seem to affect some of the absolute pillars of our traditional beliefs: the sanctity of life from womb to tomb, the value of the family and marriage, the acceptance that the sexuality given us is given by a God who makes us in his image, the values and guidelines of the Commandments. Our secular western culture seems determined to gradually change all this and more besides. Are we in the age of Babylon or Sodom and Gomorrah? We are living in interesting times!!! Notice that to to out of step with the new tolerance is to find you may be treated with great intolerance. Being out of step takes great courage and moral conviction.

What a great video and very disturbing to me as a Catholic in England . The church in Ireland which had still existed against the threat of great persecution 400 hundred years ago when worship was illegal under the pain of death for these holy priests and people and which was the author of it's own downfall to some extent . As the guy being interviewed said , because it was held in such high esteem it had much further to fall and what was all the m ore shocking is the short space of time it happened in . They say ' every cloud has a silver lining ' so perhaps some good will come from this in the form of a simpler and renewed church . We should also remember how many priests from Ireland went around the world evangelising and bringing the faith to Africa particularly and went to places like the USA , Australia , Canada , New Zealand and the UK and in fact any part of the English speaking world where Irish people had emigrated to . Ireland has almost become a mission territory itself now .

He's an ex Muslim atheist but he highlights a lot of Christian suffering and disenfranchisement in the Muslim world particularly in Pakistan where his family are from. He's also an aussie so I'm sure you two would have loads to talk about! But yeah I think we in the west need to speak out more about the suffering of Christians (and other minorities) in places where there is no religious freedom and where minorities are bullied rather than protected. I went to a school run by Irish Palotine Priests in the 2000s. Good men of God, and quite patient with my atheism. Sadly some of them were martyrized in 1976. May God bless their souls in heaven.

One thing that is profoundly different in European cultures compared especially to the American one (I don't know the Australian): the American culture has competition engrained in its DNA, with all its good and bad results. And European cultures don't. So for an American it's normal to try to attract people to his or her point of view about religion - it's something you usually don't do in Europe. Not on the streets. Not among friends. Not even in Church. Sad but true.
And if you're not equipped with rational arguments for your faith - why practice them, you don't use them anyhow - a lack of intellectualism is the logical result.

I mean where do I start with the problems facing the Church here? It is catastrophic. The hostility towards Catholicism in Ireland nowadays is frightening.

Ireland 🇮🇪needs a revival, a move of the holy Spirit. Jesus is the only way. I pray God changes Catholics hearts to live for Christ and not the Pope. We must recognize we are all in need of a saviour, our works cannot save us. We cannot fool God. We are saved by his grace

I tried bringing a boys retreat group to Ireland a few years back. It would have been free of charge with an aim to help young Irish boys be stronger Catholics. I contacted several dioceses and archdioceses and never heard anything from them.
Probably because the priests and bishops feared you'd be robbing them of their bum-boys. The sooner all priests are dead and all religion vanished there is no hope for humanity.
The whole idea of a mass rock is interesting because that was actually how at least Germanic Heathens would give offerings to the Gods. It's called a hurg and it's basically a big flat rock in the middle of a sacred grove, usually near a sacred tree or well. There's something I can appreciate about that almost coming full-circle, as well as empathize with because like Irish Catholic mass these sacrifices started out as large public festivals, like I've heard there was an account where once a year the river Thames would overflow with swords, but then during the conversion they became very private and secretive things as the attendants would have been in fear for their lives. I'm glad that barring covid regulations both Catholics and Heathens can now publicly observe our faiths.

Just a quick fact, life expectancy has doubled in most countries in the past 50 years and it wasn't because of religion

Depends on which european country we are talking about. Different things are happening to the church in different european countries. In Ireland everything is decreasing, but in Poland churches are being built and in 2016 Jesus Christ was officially crowned king of the country with the participation of the president. Not everywhere has a dark outlook and this is just one examples of two different ways

When I see that happening in the west I see how my country (Brazil) differs much, in the US and EU people are leaving the church to be secular, while here people left the church for being soft in social issues, so they became evangelical. Instead of becoming secular, we are becoming a protestant country.
