Messejana

Messejana é uma freguesia portuguesa do concelho de Aljustrel, de origem bem antiga, cujo nome provém do arábe e significa prisão ou cácere.
Uma das mais antigas e enraizadas tradições de Messejana é a tourada. Já em 1573, quando D. Sebastião esteve no Sul do país e passou 4 dias em Messejana, aqui se realizaram três touradas.
No Museu de Messejana encontram-se algumas preciosidades: uma sala reconstituindo o escritório de Soares Victor, filho ilustre da terra, os cântaros utilizados por Francisco Manuel Bartolomeu, último aguadeiro de Messejana, reconstituição de várias dependências das casas típicas alentejanas, nomeadamente as cozinhas, a despensa, o quarto de cama e a casa da costura.
O legado patrimonial conta com o Pelourinho de Messejana, a Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, a Igreja, Prisão e Torre da Miericórdia, o Castelo, a Lagoa e a Praia.
