Love the way you let your kids experience the real world. My daughters grew up in east Africa so soon adapted to bush living and no power and sometimes no water. It will make them much more resilient and self reliant adults.
Fascinating to see more of the hydrology of your land revealed through this rain event. Those who farmed there in years gone by clearly knew it well and built accordingly as you say. Also lovely to see Puck sloshing around but also noticing the way the water is moving across the land. Last but not least i love your “cat plant” 😽
I love how down to earth & calm you are about everything, that's how places like yours came into existence years ago & it's also how it'll be rebuilt by you & lived in & loved for many years to come. The way of life most of us have is so out of touch with the planet & sustainability & actual living as opposed to consuming & I'm really looking forward to seeing how you keep developing your land & enjoying life with your children. Far too late in my life to do what I'd like to but I think I live minimalistically & as kindly towards our planet as is possible for me. Look forward to your next video. ❤️🌱
Rain is a blessing, especially in dry regions. In Northeast Brazil, where I live the climate is very similar to yours and we wonder every year how good will the rainy season will be. When is good we see a transformation on the countryside, the dry, gray vegetation turns green and nature is happy, and so do we. 😃
Seal your pond by encouraging ducks. Their manure settles and forms a seal. It also takes time. So nice to see people who understand that good things can take time.
It is exciting to see the landscape when it rains! As you have said, it also identifies the areas that you will need to work on. So much water! Such a blessing!
We appreciate your openess and honesty Lea. Patience is a virtue all though frustrating at times but you have the temperment to deal with your needs while adapting and woking with your environment. Waiting and observing the land is wise to your requirements. Country life is a slower pace for many reasons that become more obvious as you work on the homestead. Great video, thanks for sharing and see you next time. 💯 👍
Wow, after such droughts, the rain came with a vengence. What can we do, must be grateful for it. You are good to yourselves and good to the land. The Dutchmen are famous for solving water problems - who but you? :)
Thanks for the video, it’s very cold & icy here in England this week. I sometimes cut my potatoes in half, score them & smear with oil, they cook in half the time & are just as tasty (if not better). Have a good week & hope the rain stops soon 😊
It’s so beautiful there even in the rain. So peaceful looking I love watching the meals you prepare thanks your the tour of the land looking forward to next week
Your rainbow is lovely after the rain. If you like curry and onions, I cook 1 teaspoon full of curry powder once the onions are almost cooked clear, add a little butter then some scrambled eggs (6 eggs plus 5 dessertspoons milk. Once the onions are clear I add the scrambled egg mixture. You could try what you add, i.e. cooked potato or cooked cabbage. Your lunch looked nice.
You guys must be so proud of how your hard work has really paid off. That well looks so amazing. Thank you for the walk along. I love seeing places during all weather. Mostly in the winter. It is such a dramatic change. Thanks again.-Melanie 🦋
I love the view from the mountain! Beautiful! We have a similar situation here, but not as tense as yours. I am so thankful for the rain because of the drought this year. My garden almost died because our well and nearby creek went dry. We got water from our neighbor or we would have had to move away for 3 months. I started mulching with straw, and that helped. Five years in a row with almost no rain made it very difficult for us here in the south. The people on the coast are having a hard time with this flood and I hope and wish them all the best and the help they need!
That was a lovely walk around the property. You have the most fabulous view of the valley, and the mountains surrounding you from your future home site.
I apparently also have a pond,, not as big as yours,, but It was just a dry hole when I bought the place. and there is a stream down in front my house as soon as it rains.
When water is standing in your pond. You would have to shake the clay inside after one week in order to that the pond is tight. On the side the damm needs to be equal to 1 to 2, which means if it 1 meter high you need to have 2 meters wide. Otherwise you run the risk that the dam is going to break. Furthermore you need an overflow on the side. I learnt this from Sepp Holzer directly who is doing permaculture. How to build ponds is not mentioned in his books though.
My kids grew up around hot fire like yours. They dont touch it but can accidently trip or fall so we ALWAYS had a fire guard...burn scars are never healed
In China there would always be drainage channels at the high side of the road. Probably not the first thing you want to work on, but some areas of the road might be really useful to protect from washing away. China has many flaws, but building roads in mountains with monsoon rains they are pretty good at.
Oh wow, that'll be a challenge for the next few years to make your new road play well with the hydrology. I'm sure you'll figure it out as you find out things like this. Its route may not have any alternatives and it obviously can't be placed to follow terrain contour lines to avoid water running down its surface but perhaps there are other solutions to slowing down and dispersing the flow, or laying down a gutter or something when that's not possible Loving the "cat plant", a familiar species in various other climates too!
Destino Portugal seems to be a couple who attract strays and they have a two-year old female dog who may need rehoming (and renaming). Two potential problems are that she's very energetic and her name is the same (or very similar) as yours.
I grew up with wood stoves, so did my sibling, and all my cousins. Not one of us were ever burned, not once. No one warned us, watched us, we just didn't play, run, touch, the stove when a fire was burning, from the time we could crawl. We spent most of our waking hours playing in the forest, the creeks, the rock cliffs, the lake, only one injury among us, my brother fell and broke his arm, we were little, I instinctively splint it and stabilized it while we walked the long distance home to my Mom. That was it, and we took care of it. We were lucky to experience caution, not fear.
Children are very inquisitive with fire and water. Lea, you are a lovely person please do not be complacent. Place a guard around your stove and put a cover over your water wells.
When you showed the water under Maarten's bridge, I immediately wondered if you'd seeded or plan to seed watercress there. Not sure now would be the optimal time to do so, but something to consider??
And yes, some things just take time, especially things involving nature. Patience and understanding needed. Improving soil, waiting for clay to settle, for trees to grow. But it is worth the wait. One of my favorite things in our yard was my old 'cold compost pile' [Really the place I dumped all the weeds and grass, and tree trimmings, and dead plants, and brush, because I had to put them somewhere....] BIG LONG pile! 6 or 7 years later, it was soil enough, and slumped enough, that it made a gorgeous rock garden :)
We learn very young that hot things are dangerous and we don't touch them however, even as adults we can't resist that fatal touch whenever we see a wet paint sign......😄
Have you ever watched Justin Rhodes youtube channel? He is working on the water sources on his property and I think maybe there are a few videos that could help you with your springs!! You guys are water blessed!!
be very careful, if the pond leaks! ...if the pression is too big, suddenly can happen a break! (we had this last year...it's more water, than You imagine!)
Here in central Spain we´re swimming around like you are! 😆Hasn´t rained so much in the 5 years we´ve owned the land. How are you doing for power? This is the first time I´ve had to use the generator since we installed the wind turbine, as we just have a blanket of rainy clouds sitting over our heads all day with practically no wind and our panels are obviously no use (I call it "bloody Englsh weather"). About the stove, I spend most of my early childhood playing in front of an open fire with no problems. My parents eventually put a wire mesh fire guard in front but only because I started to get interested in what happened when I threw stuff in. 🤣
We went off grid here in southern Italy at the start of October. 😳 November was not kind to us solar wise and the generator was also used extensively. I need to install our wind turbine again after the wind took it down along with part of the wall it was mounted to. Not keen on running the generator so often though. Further improvement to my system is required if I want to be off grid successfully during winter. Our vegetable garden and hoop house was under 3 feet of water this week. Got about 20 inches in 12 hours last Saturday night.☹️ it has only just drained and more rain is coming. The joys of off grid life. 🤣🤣
We've used the generator a few times now, which is not usual for us. We only need a few hours of sun the recharge the batteries fully, but no such thing the last few weeks. Being off-grid is the hardest in the winter for sure
A really neat crop you can plant in the streams is water cress. Great green which can be used in salads or can be used to make soups. And wasabi. There are many other Japanese/oriental greens that grow in flowing streams. These could augment produce that isn't produced in the ground. They like colder temperatures and running water which should be a perfect match for you there.
20:13 Looks like a Parasol. If the vulval ring is free of the stem it is very likely. I'd need a closer look. Good eating if it is. I dry them mostly and keep them for stews.
Where are you, in theAstelo Blanco area. If so. you only need to worry when you don t have enough water, like July/August when you need, like last year.
During the Easter season, I would save the large size of the shell. Then I would place them in dye. After they are dry, I'd place a wick inside, pouring in the wax. They make lovely gifts, and were very welcomed by my family and friends. Placing the egg tree with the egg candles in the center of the table, made a beautiful a centerpiece. My friend was preparing for a wedding and she asked me to make some for their tables and gifts for anyone that wanted to take them home. Her husband made egg trees to display them. She told me that most of egg candles were gone including the trees. Thinking I'll start saving the shells for the Easter season. It's been many years since I have made these candles, so new eyes 👀 will see them and appreciated them once again. Have to keep an eye 👁 opened for the egg trees. Or maybe I can start making some wire stands for displaying. It is January 1st of the New Year. Happy New Year to everyone. Hopefully the New Year will be filled with blessings for!
Love your mountain top view. Do you ever talk to Puc in English? Does she understand? You are both such kind and patient parents. Your children are very lucky.
That fritata creation episode came up just as I got up and turned on the computer---without breakfast! Needless to say, I am siting in a pool of 'drool'----it looked so good and relatively easy to make and me w/o cabbage, sausage, or even an onion! Where is the justice??? 😗
Many young people and new arrivals do not realize that even here in Algarve it used to rain substantially from October to May- this may just be an old-fashioned pattern. Few seem to realize how close we were here in Portugal to having our water run out. GOD bless the rain. Feliz Natal/Christmas/ Noel/ Natale, etc.
Yes we definitely got very low on water this year, much worse in the Algarve from what I've seen as well. I know this used to be normal, here in the region is has always been up and down from the statistics I can see online. Would just be nice to get some sun hours though, because we are still in a building phase and need to get stuff done. In a few years I'll happily huddle up inside for a few months :)
Digging the pond was the important start. It will develop over time and in years to come when it is stable and holding water for months, you will look back at this video with a big smile 😁. I have seen where people have used ducks to stabilize ponds, but that would mean more work for you, which you probably don't have the time for, especially with a young family.
Muito, muito, muito chuva 😪😪😪 I'm sure a dog, or two will fall into your lap. Sorry, just catching up on your last few episodes as we've been snowed under/rained under. I have guessed what you're doing next year 😉
Mmm that looks good! I am going to try making that! Puc doesn't know what she's missing! I know, I was picky when I was a kid too! I have been using cabbage a lot more lately. I just have to think what sausage to use. When this video ended, it autostarted another video where the first thing you say is that it is annoying that it has not rained yet and your well is getting low. 😁. When it rains it pours!
@@ourportuguesehomestead I might have to try it with bacon too! I made it tonight with kielbasa, onion, garlic, bell peppers, cabbage, eggs and milk. I also sprinkled some shredded cheese on top! It turned out great! Everyone in my family loved it (except our six year old refused to try it) and we ate it all! Huzzah! Have you guys tried to grow garlic yet? I think you can still plant it now and have a good result in July. Thanks for the inspiration for dinner! 😁👍😁👍😁👍
@@ourportuguesehomestead Hmmm. I have never experienced rotten garlic. I am sure if you had a patch of ground that was elevated and/or well draining, the garlic would be fine as long as its not immersed in water. It does most of the growing early, before your weather turns dry, so it may do well to plant it in an area that might be too dry for other veggies. Good luck with it and try to include a little clip of your garlic in a future video! 👍😁👍
right now I find myself reminiscing fondly about that drought, as we sit here and need to ration our internet because the batteries are struggling with the constant rain and clouds…
@@ourportuguesehomestead i'm a bit afraid my Summer-self would time travel and slap me for having such thoughts lol. It's the problem with basically living outside full time, these days just feel a tad miserable :')
Not a stupid question haha. The big pond at the bottom is exactly where all the water already goes. And the smaller pond higher on the hill is springfed. I’m doing my best to put ponds where they will fill naturally. Cheers, Maarten
Just looking at all the trimming and digging done over the years amazes me, especially knowing all the work/time raising and feeding the family requires. You guys will look back with pride after your goals are complete.
@@ourportuguesehomestead Oh.. ok. He's done a good job with the road and everything. I hope he'll fix his excavator soon so we can see more of that. :) BR
What abundance after this summer‘s drought! Makes you wish you could harvest all of that water all at once, doesn’t it? I am always surprised at viewers‘ worries about the kids safety in your area. I find it more dangerous in the American suburbs.
Can i ask, what part of the country you are? Should be center/south if 100ml is too much :-). Here in the northwest área of Minho, close to the Gerês National Park, that's just normal rain.
@@ourportuguesehomestead yes, that part is very dry. Good luck for the next days, more heavy rain is coming on monday and twesday. Even here where the soil has no clay, things are getting problematic but we have rain since late september. All my peas got rotten with so much rain. Even the fava beans that love water are starting to complain.
Move chicken pen higher. Several other American couples in Portugal having similar issues with water/rain including chicken pen - move it. Your place not as bad as some others. Romans were very smart about drainage and roads.

She can learn about mushrooms, but it was just one so not much use.
Is that Monsanto and the estrela mountain range you look over from the top
It's the Serra da Estrela and the Gardunha, can't see Monsanto from our place
Digging the pond was the important start. It will develop over time and in years to come when it is stable and holding water for months, you will look back at this video with a big smile 😁. I have seen where people have used ducks to stabilize ponds, but that would mean more work for you, which you probably don't have the time for, especially with a young family.
I'm sure it will be beautiful in the end :) You're right, we can't really take on more animals at this time
Louie would love some new duck friends 😅!
@@catarinatorres6378 we’ll get him a doggy friend first 😅
can you post your egg and cabbage dish recipy. looks yummy.
It's just onion, shredded cabbage (pre-boiled), chorizo (I also make it with bacon), and eggs :)
Muito, muito, muito chuva 😪😪😪
I'm sure a dog, or two will fall into your lap.
Sorry, just catching up on your last few episodes as we've been snowed under/rained under.
I have guessed what you're doing next year 😉
I think we've had enough rain now... Don't think I've told you about this project! So you'll have to wait and see ;)
Heerlijk al dat stromende water na die lange droogte
Van het eene extreem naar het andere 😅
Mmm that looks good! I am going to try making that! Puc doesn't know what she's missing! I know, I was picky when I was a kid too! I have been using cabbage a lot more lately. I just have to think what sausage to use. When this video ended, it autostarted another video where the first thing you say is that it is annoying that it has not rained yet and your well is getting low. 😁. When it rains it pours!
How things can change! Any sausage would be nice, I also make it with bacon which is also excellent :)
@@timeflysintheshop I have garlic ready to be planted, but am afraid it might rot in the ground with how wet it is now?
@@ourportuguesehomestead Hmmm. I have never experienced rotten garlic. I am sure if you had a patch of ground that was elevated and/or well draining, the garlic would be fine as long as its not immersed in water. It does most of the growing early, before your weather turns dry, so it may do well to plant it in an area that might be too dry for other veggies. Good luck with it and try to include a little clip of your garlic in a future video! 👍😁👍
nice life
You are a wonder!
right now I find myself reminiscing fondly about that drought, as we sit here and need to ration our internet because the batteries are struggling with the constant rain and clouds…
Crazy how that works 😂 But I've always liked the heat more, that's why we moved here
@@ourportuguesehomestead i'm a bit afraid my Summer-self would time travel and slap me for having such thoughts lol. It's the problem with basically living outside full time, these days just feel a tad miserable :')
I was expecting the water to be flowing down the road. Some of then can get quite rutted without proper side ditching.
Just on the old part of the road :)
This is probably a stupid question but have you considered digging the ponds where the water naturally flows?
Not a stupid question haha. The big pond at the bottom is exactly where all the water already goes. And the smaller pond higher on the hill is springfed. I’m doing my best to put ponds where they will fill naturally. Cheers, Maarten
Just looking at all the trimming and digging done over the years amazes me, especially knowing all the work/time raising and feeding the family requires.
You guys will look back with pride after your goals are complete.
It's been a lot of hard work so far, but it's already so beautiful!
I was wondering if you have discovered what type of medicinal plants grow and are used in your area?
Not really, we are not so interested in herbalism
I think you might need to move the chickens to higher ground maybe
😌
The pond looks fantastic! Marteen should be proud of it at least now. :) Why doesn't he film anything anymore? :D
He’s just been doing some repairs in the background
@@ourportuguesehomestead Oh.. ok. He's done a good job with the road and everything. I hope he'll fix his excavator soon so we can see more of that. :) BR
What abundance after this summer‘s drought! Makes you wish you could harvest all of that water all at once, doesn’t it?
I am always surprised at viewers‘ worries about the kids safety in your area. I find it more dangerous in the American suburbs.
Do wild animals/ other peoples pets ever fall into the top well?
It’s in a corner, not really a logical route, so no.
グッドモーニング☕🍞🌄。☔
Can i ask, what part of the country you are? Should be center/south if 100ml is too much :-). Here in the northwest área of Minho, close to the Gerês National Park, that's just normal rain.
We’re in the Castelo Branco district, so this is not usual for us 😅
@@ourportuguesehomestead yes, that part is very dry. Good luck for the next days, more heavy rain is coming on monday and twesday.
Even here where the soil has no clay, things are getting problematic but we have rain since late september. All my peas got rotten with so much rain. Even the fava beans that love water are starting to complain.
Who are able to say that in summer there are 40 temperatures over there|!!!!!!!!!!!strengh from Lisbon
Move chicken pen higher. Several other American couples in Portugal having similar issues with water/rain including chicken pen - move it. Your place not as bad as some others. Romans were very smart about drainage and roads.
It’s in the never ending to do list 👍 We’re Dutch, not American btw.
