I have 2 under 2. One thing I did when I knew I would have the other right away was buy mostly gender neutral clothing to pass down. Then I made a savings account for each child . That was the start . I thought I would stay home until they started pre school but I need to do my side hustles / part time gigs . Because, I want to up my savings for their future . The expenses are low for the most part because I don’t buy most brand names . In diapers or anything . And I focus more on activities than “things”. There’s plenty of DIy crafts for my toddler . Our one income has been doable but it doesn’t do so great for the savings . So I think part time around hubby’s work is best . Daycare was never something I ever wanted . ❤️
And yes - Ibotta and chase cash back helps . If you use it for regular groceries every month you should have at least $40 cash back . And sell the old baby clothes on Fb marketplace to buy new baby clothes as the baby grows .

My daughter is 5 months now and when I learned that I was pregnant I started saving like crazy. I already knew I wouldn't have that much help so I wanted to make sure I would be okay for a few months after she was born

Same ! Plus I shopped for very little . My mom always says we need more baby clothes . Because I have just enough to last the week and a half . She’s nuts 😅

When I found I was pregnant with our first, it was right before FMLA came into being. Since I'd been w the bank for a year before, I was grandfathered under the old plan which was (don't get jealous now😂) SIX MONTHS PER CHILD maternity leave. My coworker had twins and was out a full year. The catch was it wasn't all paid leave. First we had to exhaust your leaves which rolled over yearly. So personal leave (2wks), then sick leave (3 wks), then family sick leave.(2 wks); then short term leave (6 wks,), then 10 weeks of long term. All that was paid by what you accumulated. So I had about 5 months of the paid leave coming to me.
I started putting away $$;with every paycheck, then before my commute back home, I'd stop in the local grocery and pick up the busted packs of diapers (usually a quarter size rip or a slice in the pack by a box cutter when they were stocking).
It didn't matter to me whether for boy or girl because I figured it only goes in one direction, out 😂.
By the time our first was born, I had well over 80 packs and a little over $1900 cash saved. Toward the end of my leave, we relocated and I followed the same pattern w our next two.
It just took some planning and being proactive.
I didn't take getting a shower for granted. And all showers I've been to hardly gave enough for one or two years. Maybe one or two months if that. If people want to contribute, great. But I was raised to basically plan ahead and do what you can instead of waiting 9 months then not having what I needed.
I'm not knocking showers, but I've always been a planner and it really made no sense (to me) to not accept hand-me-ups while I was pregnant. The fancy stuff I could get once he came. & We didn't find out the sex until birth (coming from 10 boys, there was no surprise when he came & Salvations Army had plenty of little jeans & sailor & dress suits for outings & pics)
By the time our first was born, I already had a swing, high chair, adjustable crib that transferred into a toddler bed, strollers (traveller & umbrella), pack&play pen, car seat, onesies, snow suits (NYers born & raised), so many items, I was able to bless the quad (4 closest girlfriends) with the duplicates.
Seemed the only thing left to give was $$ and he had a beginner college fund by the time he was 4 months😊
I also checked ahead w the hospital and chose a shared room (cut the cost to half).
With each child, I also participated in consignment sales each season (fall & spring). I pulled anywhere from $150-$300 every sale so that came to the equivalent of about $200-$250 a week for 4 months (spring ) & a bit more for fall/winter season, all tax free and fun.
