      Isn't that the truth? Education is touted as the gateway to knowledge but you can learn a lot of things without a college degree

      The only reason I didn't stay in my stepdads dump truck business is cause my mother, grandmother, and teachers and counselors kept kicking it away from me. Now I'm in my middle forties about to get my CDL to pursue my lifelong dream of flatbed, dumptrucks, tractors, and equipment.

    The cost of machines is on the steady rise. I will not let an unproven employee hop into a machine. People get hurt, machines get abused, and profitability suffers if an undeserving person gets in the operator seat. Earn the chance to climb the ladder. Be dependable, honest, and steadily improve yourself.

    • @DieselandIron
      @DieselandIron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      100%. You have to earn the seat by proving you can handle the responsibilities of the seat.

    I’m looking in to being an operator so what he’s saying is don’t go to the school and just get the job as a laborer and work your way up to an operator? Don’t you need a license to work the big machines been hearing so many different things not really sure where to start

    • @DieselandIron
      @DieselandIron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the US you do not need a license or any special certifications to run heavy equipment. It is far faster (and more money in your pocket) to go to work for a contractor and start as a laborer. You will get a better education and you will earn money rather than paying money.

    • @williamchevalier2224
      @williamchevalier2224 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's my understanding that the only license you need is to drive a crane.

    • @DieselandIron
      @DieselandIron  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the beauty of this industry. As long as you don't mind starting on a shovel and you like to work hard, it doesn't matter. You can start your career at any time. I didn't get into the industry until I was about 24.

    Brian, I thought you had better judgement than to teach young operators not to get educated. How are jobs figured? What mathematical skills must be employed? How do you invest the companies money or retire if you don't know how to calculate compound interest? What is shear strength, why is concrete so strong? Because of what you're putting in this man's head, he'll not have any of this information and he'll be hard pressed to run his own business some day. The best operators I know are some of the best educated people I know. The skills of desire, self esteem, discipline derived from desire and a proper sense of self are best learned at school. I have a degree in music education and my college background has made me a better operator and business man. We both know school is difficult, and I worked part time jobs while in school and it was really tough, and I don't regret a minute. I believe telling someone not to continue their education at least to the end of the High School level is presumptive and foolish. Love you as a person and really enjoy your channel, but I believe this advice is a huge mistake...

      The one thing I'll say here is that I firmly believe everyone should finish high school and get their diploma. I was too busy thinking about how cold I was to pick up on the part of the conversation where they were saying it's fine to bug out of high school. I adamantly disagree with that.
      That being said, you will never convince me that it is worth $25-60k to send someone to college to learn about compound interest and concrete compressive forces. Unless you plan on becoming an engineer, you don't need that information to run a business. I've never needed to calculate compound interest to run my business and if I did, there are plenty of tools out there to help me do that. You'll find that most guys in the trades are extremely resourceful and educate themselves by doing and asking questions. If we need to figure something out we either take to the internet or find someone smarter than ourselves to educate us. None of this requires us spending a bunch of money on a college education.

      @jacoblarsen6974 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DieselandIron I mostly agree, but what happens when you want to calculate to retire or invest? I know there are a lot of ways to get that information. It was just an example...Love your vids.

  • @mrchambers06
    @mrchambers06 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I definitely disagree with this I'm in the construction trade and you really need a high school diploma

    • @DieselandIron
      @DieselandIron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would agree that having a high school diploma will make life significantly easier but I think Rick's point was you can get by without having one in this industry
      EDIT: So I rewatched this and the conversation was different than I had recalled. The point I was trying to make was the most of the college level classes you take are mostly useless information that doesn't translate to the real world. I should've done a better job of addressing the lack of a high school education. While it is possible to make it in this industry without a GED, life is much harder and you will absolutely be limited in how far up the food chain you can go. I apologize that I didn't address that specifically. I'm in complete agreement with you.
