  • Two old rivals are pitted against each other in basic training and fight over the same woman. They later become aerial gunners and face the enemy in the Pacific war zone.
    1943 American War Drama Film
    Jon Davis is a policeman who informs “Foxy” Pattis at his shooting gallery that his criminal father has died. Foxy blames all policemen for his father’s death and vows revenge. Jon enlists in the U.S. Army Air Forces and Foxy is drafted into the same branch. Foxy becomes an instructor at an aerial gunnery school and makes life miserable for Jon, who is one of his students. He tries to force Jon to quit or fail the course, but Jon perseveres and passes. He also befriends a young Texan gunner, Sandy, whose father was killed at Pearl Harbor. Sandy invites Jon and Foxy to his family’s ranch, where they both fall in love with his sister Peggy. After graduation, Jon becomes a pilot of a light bomber and many of his classmates become his crew. Foxy is assigned as his gunner and continues to antagonize him.
    Aerial Gunner was directed by William H. Pine, who also produced the film with William C. Thomas through their company Pine-Thomas Productions. The film was based on an idea by Jack F. Dailey, a former public relations executive for Paramount Pictures who joined the Army and worked at Harlingen Air Force Base in Texas. The film was written by Maxwell Shane, who also wrote several other films for Pine-Thomas Productions, such as Flying Tigers (1942) and The Navy Way (1944). The film starred Chester Morris and Richard Arlen, who were the two top stars of Pine-Thomas Productions and appeared in many films together. The film also featured Jimmy Lydon, who was known for playing Henry Aldrich in a series of comedy films for Paramount Pictures. The film was inspired by the real-life training and combat experiences of aerial gunners in World War II. The film used authentic footage of aerial warfare and bombing raids over Japan. The film was released in 1943 by Paramount Pictures. It received positive reviews from critics and audiences and was a commercial success. It was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography.

    I watched this and think of my Dad. He was in WWII a radio man on a B-24. What a great generation! I was a combat medic in the jungles of Vietnam. 1st Air Cav 1968-69. We both were proud to serve our great country. I only wish that this country was as good as the old days. God bless America.

    Great Movie of the times, thanks for posting. My Dads generation, most of the pilots and flyers were 20 to 23 years old. I wonder if there will ever be a greater generation? Only history will tell.

      I doubt it. They just did their job and didn’t bitch about it. I miss that generation.

    Una grata sorpresa ver estos filmes clásicos del género bélico en tan buenas condiciones. Nada como el cine de una era dorada en seguir gustando con el correr de los años.
    Saludos y bendiciones a todos los cinéfilos de corazón desde Venezuela.

    My friends father was in a B17 as a tail gunner
    When he first went into his ship, 1:19:06 he said he just knew he could never get out the escape hatch. When his plane was shot down, said there was room to spare .

    Something wrong with the sound. It kept cutting out throughout the whole movie!

    I heard of a pilot who shot down many planes but could not prove it because the videos on his plane showed no planes in sight. Because he always shot in front of the planes, and let the pilots fly into the bullets.

      @larrygribaudo1092 So, there should have been footage of enemy planes flying into the bullets, assuming the camera was gun activated.

      All pilots fired ahead of the target and their cameras worked fine. That story is baloney.

    Hard to watch with the sound track "hiccups". Had to bail out at 5:42.

    • @Jens-Viper-Nobel
      @Jens-Viper-Nobel 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Why? Sure. There were hiccups. But it's an old movie by far and not digitally remastered. And even with them and me being hearing impaired, you still get the whole thing. You might miss a word or two here and there, but generally you get the meaning of even those sentences. Much like you do in everyday life.
      I'll let you in on a little secret that instructors know (yeah, I'm active duty naval guy). In most cases when anybody is talking to anybody else in a very quiet setting, they will get the whole sentence straight. But as soon as some background noise comes in, it deteriorates slightly for most people. Even when paying attention. It won't make a sentence hard to understand in any way, but your brain will miss part of a word here and a shorter word there, but given the convo subject, your brain will interpret it by itself and insert those missing pieces as it, based on your experience and knowledge of things and the other persons habitual way of talking to your knowledge, into the sentence to make it full again, and because it is something the brain does automatically, people don't even notice it.
      So, the propability is that what you are experiencing in this movie, you only notice because there are no disturbance from other sound sources while you are watching tv/computer. Had you been watching it in a room full of other people talking, you most likely would only notice it if the tv was turned up loud, and most likely wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't and there was a buzzing of people talking in the background. And it is because the brain is used to interpret in that way when there are other sounds to blur the total soundpicture as this is the most normal situation for people living in the normal setting of society today with all it's gadgets and vehicles and electronics buzzing all around us all the time.

    Where is Robert Mitchum?

    • @aktimes2
      @aktimes2 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      He was like half way through the movie. He was the leader in a different flight and made a wager with one of the main protagonists that his flight would score higher in the flying shooting qualifications.
