If done right trading King, Cease, Arraez could actually help bring in more controllable mlb ready top prospects. Maybe focus on rebuilding by adding a few top prospects/mlb ready players around Leo De Vries and Salas. If those two turn out to be what they believe they can, and get a good return for cease, king, arraez, while having merrill, tatis, manny, that team could be very scary. Obviously this year may be a down year but with salas and de vries coming in the next couple years these trades could have a huge impact on the future. No way we are re-signing cease after this year, King very doubtful since he's now heading for arbitration. I was and still am concerned about the future but honestly if done right trading these guys would be for the best long term.
@@sagedog6770 getting red of those three and even our closer should make a rebuild a rather short endeavor. No one wants to wait five or six years but if we get the right players in return which MUST include top young pitching Padres could be right back at it in one or two years. Are minor league catcher and shortstop aren't going to be ready until at least 2 more years anyway. This could be a nice young group we Padre fans could watch for a few years down the road rather than the constant in two years and then out only to have others come in for 2 years and then out, I'm tired of that. In those trades we could also get some talent to put in the minors too. I would gladly sacrifice 1 , or two years waiting for it to come together. I would love to be in on that from the beginning even though I'm running out of Good Year's to watch these guys.
Padres should go all in this year. I would invite Trevor Bauer and Julio Urias to Spring Training. Tell them one small mistake the team will cut you. The upside would be fantastic at a minimum risk.
The problem is if King, Cease, and arraiz don’t sign extensions this season then they walk next season in free agency and then the padres get nothing. Just like what happened to the Angels when Ohtani left. At least if you trade them this year you get young controllable players for the future. However, yes it means rebuilding and a few extra seasons before competing again. But realistically the dodgers have surpassed the padres making them a Cinderella team if they beat them
Folks at this point would anything surprise you with the Padres? We're not in the room with all the Eggheads so it's hard to say whether they should trade him or not. If they knew at this point right now there is no way they would be able to extend him then of course they should trade him now. They know they can't sign Cease so he should go. This is a team with way too many holes to fill and no help in the minor league system. Get some young controllable pitching in return, fill the holes, and let's get at it. It doesn't appear they can make even a small run at it at this point. The Dodgers just recently dumped one season knowing they were going big the following season but unfortunately for the Padres they fell flat and the Dodgers still won. Got to get some new young GOOD blood on this team, HUNGRY BLOOD WITH TALENT.
Completely agree, no way we re-sign Cease, King, Arraez very unlikely. The return for those three could be pretty awesome if done right. You may even be able to find a good match for that cronenworth contract and save some money. They still are a playoff team and everyone knows anything is possible in baseball in October but they definitely need to find some good young pitching like you stated.
The players do not care until a deal is done. Rumors are rumors and most of it is trash. These dudes are living life on tens of millions, just ready to play baseball. Nothing the padres do is gonna match the Dodgers, it just comes down to one series in October…

@ I haven’t read or heard anywhere that the rumored $170M threshold has come from the Padres. Pretty sure that’s just speculation and click bait at this point in time. When AJ says that, then I’ll believe it. I believe they’d like to remain under the first luxury tax penalty. I know they are close to that now. With the $36M they will save from the Arraez, Cease and King trades, they could sign those 3 free agents. I’ve read Heaney will cost $11-$12M a year, Scherzer $12-$15M, and JD $3-$5M, with incentives. It’s close, but I trust in AJ. He’s been dealt some sh!t cards to play, gonna have to get creative to make it happen and stay competitive.
If they are trading Cease, King and or Arraez they will be getting prospects back in return, not MLB players. And by doing so you are basically punting on at least the next 3-5 years. Best case scenario at that point is that some of those prospects pan out and they can somehow afford to eat enough of Bogaerts' remaining salary to dump him. Then you have the remaining 5-6 years of Manny and Tatis with the new crop of young guys they develop by then.
@@RossCipriano says you. MLB ready prospects is who you trade your 2 frontline starters for. Just look at what the Orioles traded to the Brewers for Burnes. Anyways, the Padres have holes to fill on their MLB roster, so the only way that AJ trades his frontline starters is for MLB ready prospects. Period. Full stop.
@@darrenmichael7978 I think you are more optimistic than I am about their chances of competing this season. If they stand pat and try to add a LF, C and DH via FA I don't see that getting them over the hump. If they want to fill those needs via trade it will cost Cease and King or Arraez and then they would need a 1B to replace Arraez and at least one more pitcher. I think they need to start tearing it down sooner than later. That means stacking as many prospects as possible.

It's not going to happen overnight but as long as we all see progress and light at the end of the tunnel it can be enjoyable.

i'm a dodger fan but that sounds like an excellent idea to entertain ... alot of upside!
At some point, they should have a 2nd chance. Its my understanding that Urias as been sober for a year.
