- Writer/director/producer Jordan Peele joins UCSB’s Matt Ryan for a Script-to-Screen discussion of Get Out (2017), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Peele explains how the tone of the film was influenced by his background in comedy, the work of Ira Levin (The Stepford Wives, Rosemary’s Baby), and the desire to subvert the tropes of African American characters in the horror genre, as well how he created “the sunken place” through conceptualizing racism in a new way for the screen, and bringing it to life through stand-out performances from the actors.

Anytime. Any. Time I watch the Sunken Place scene or Peele talking about it. I get CHILLS. This film is the best and will forever be one of the most iconic shifts in film lexicon.
Just saw the DVD commentary for Get Out and had to learn more about it. Jordan is so open about his creative process - it's really inspiring to see such a young, humble master reaching this level of success.
He was 38 when the movie released, he wasn’t “young”
@@lachlanosborne1058 Come on, man, Hitchcock and Kubrick directed movies way into their 70s. 38 might not be young for a MMA fighter or something, but for a director to win an Oscar for writing, that's crazy young.

This interview is amazing!! I watch as many Jordan Peele interviews as I can because I think he's brilliant, but hadn't heard a lot of these stories before. Kudos to the interviewer for asking super interesting questions!
Agreed, when the interview started and I saw that PHAT stack of cards, I knew it was gonna be something good.

The Key and Peele sketches were great. I loved them. They are the best American comedy double-act alive. So, while Peele reaching this level of success as a filmmaker is exciting, it is definitely not a surprise.

It’s really powerful writing something that ends up making you feel such an emotion. I’m currently writing a stage play for my English/Creative Writing class and I ended up crying from what I wrote. Writing is such an incredible and powerful tool. This was a great interview.
The whole movie is just so clever, the thought process that went into this is beyond genius.
It is really great being taught by the greatest.
Jordan Peele is extremely creative,smart and I'm such an addictive fan of his work...
Rosemary's Baby is such a great portrait of slow burn that satisfies& delivers because the horror element of it is a character in itself because of tension,high tension!!! I'm going to have to go back and visit Rosemary's Baby,I enjoyed it for it's pace& how the film grows to the climax.

Feeling of the voiceless being a scapegoat in a malignant toxic covert NPD family feels just like that scene so much so I couldn’t watch this film for two years that scene upset me too much ... one of my favourite films now along with Rosemary’s baby which is one of if the the best gaslighting movies ever made

@@southlondon86 It’s art. This whole talk is about him representing certain ideas in the form of a thriller movie. Him explaining how his ideas are put into that medium and in certain scenes shows that he accomplished his goal, so he made good art, regardless of whether you liked the movie or not. If you need jumpscares or easier scares in a movie then that’s fine. If you can’t relate to the ideas so they don’t make you feel much when watching then that’s fine. But calling it a crap film and saying it’s just political correctness boxes being ticked makes it seem like you’re just uncomfortable with Black people addressing ideas and stances you yourself hold.

And yes your predictable routine about will preferring jump scares is redundant. This is not a scary or unsettling movie in the slightest, it’s overrated crap that ticked off boxes. Get out is one of my top 5 favorite films of all time.

Director's assistant then. An assistant director isn't what you seem to think it is.
I saw Get Out in the theaters when it came out. And the scariest part of that movie for me was the silent auction. As a viewer you see all these people bidding on him. You know no one is gonna stand up and say this is wrong, you know no one is gonna try to warn him, you know no one is gonna come to his aid. He is completely alone and completely unaware. And as a viewer there is nothing you can do to help him and you see no help for him either.
That isn’t horror. There are plenty of great horror movies that don’t get recognition but sadly an overrated movie that ticks off all the political correctness boxes and is average at best earns oscar nominations.... I guess any movie with a black lead will do well no matter how crap it is.
southlondon86 I wouldn’t call it crap. Little cliché I give you that, but we can both agree that the idea or thought of this actually happen is terrifying, and while sci-fi ish has a nice undertone that doesn’t scream, “Ouuu racist white guy and a black guy that do black things.” He does photography which is way better then the playing a sport troupe, and is well manner to where it’s not force it’s just his personality. The concept didn’t show negativity towards blacks but instead enforce the positives of being black as a “style” rather then what he is. I think the message of the movie wasn’t too political corrected, but hey I am black so maybe I look at the movie differently then you did.

pryor did also joke about that, with the Exorcist and Dracula. The dracula one can be seen on "Live and smokin'" i'm not sure the Exorcist one can be seen on video but is on one of his albums i think (as well as Paul Mooney telling the story of seeing it with Richard which is hilarious, look it up here on youtube). He also did a sketch for SNL on the same movie, also on youtube. great interview his simple but profound insight into the stepford wives and rosemary's baby and the "normal weirdness" was incredibly interesting. I'm not done yet but I'm glad this man is making films, and in the genre they're in. But why it would be nominated as a comedy...I cant say im sure I'm clear on that one. excited to see what he does with Candyman.

I didn’t realize the movies connection to Stepford Wives when I saw it, but do now. Still “Get Out” is the best film I’ve seen in a very long time!

Agreed! This is one of those movies that get under some people's skin and they lash out. I went to see it with 8 people (6 were white) and their questions afterwards were eye-opening. Everytime I was told how "unrealistic" certain situations were all I did was remind them of a moment from our friendship and said, "Now imagine it from my perspective?"
For example, the scene where the brother makes a huge deal about Chris' physique in a fistfight and all I had to do was remind them of when we watch UFC where they do the very same thing about Anderson Silva as opposed to GSP. Their assessment of Silva (a black Brazilian) is all about his innate physical gifts. Whereas they never stop talking about George St. Pierre's work ethic and Intelligence in the octagon.

So the movie takes place in upstate New York, but filmed in Alabama?
For anyone from New York (such as myself) it's immediately obvious it wasn't filmed anywhere in New York, either Upstate or Downstate, the topography, and vegetation is completely different and a lot more clearly "Southern"
