  • Let's approach this tuning form a very intuitive and musical place.
    Basically, it's a good idea to find your I, IV, and V chords, and your major and minor pentatonic scales. That's a good start!

    Happy New Year Eric. I’m a new subscriber. I found you about 4 weeks ago when I was researching guild 12 string acoustics. I actually bought the 2512 (your demo left me no choice) and I’m enjoying it a lot. It’s my lockdown guitar 2021. But watching this vid I’m going to tune a strat to open D. And to round out and improve my playing I’m finally going to start taming my right hand (thumb) after all these years. Traverse picking. I’ve fallen in love with playing all over again and being retired with no where to go, I’m going to let you help me improve my game. NY kid. Lol me too. I’m still here on LI. Thanks for the inspiration.

      By the way, I LOVE lipstick-like pickups. I have 2 SD Lipsticks in my Strat (plus a Tele bridge pup) and they sound AMAZING. Never been so in love with the sound of a guitar of mine. I also love Danelectro guitars and I'd like to have one of those Shorthorn beauties (in orange sparkle!) but I don't have the money to buy a vintage one and the new ones... well, nothing against the guitars per se (I once played one and it was not nearly as bad as they say), but I hear the Evets Corporation, which owns Danelctro since the 1990s, has donated a lot of money in support of banning gay marriage, so I'm reluctant to give them my money. Hey, I can't believe what a bore I am. I'm going to post this anyway but sorry for the dullness and the self-righteousness. Peace and love.

    Came along at just the right time. Series of coincidences. I'd just got a slide again after not having a decent pinky slide for about a year. I do all the Elmore James stuff in open D. Just before I sat down - as you do in Covid times - to find out how Big Yellow Taxi is actually played and was surprised to find it's in open D. So then today I decided to refresh my memory on Simple Twist of Fate because my guitar was already in D, and discovered that apparently most of the songs on BOTT are in open D - and was intrigued by the chords (also cos I found a nice slide lick and had started building a song around it in D pilfering Big Yellow Taxi chords like crazy).

    I just play tuned to Standard D or Eb. A capo gets Eb & Standard E out of Standard D. And I can just play the same chords with & without a capo & it's all relatively just the same Standard E, only darker for the 1/2 & full step down tune as an alternate tuning. Seems to work. And then there's Drop D & Double Drop D that can be tuned instead. Just playing with the same chord structures without having to figure out where the chords went or should be for new finger technique. Just move everything closer by a fret or 2, depending upon the capo'ed Eb or Standard E from being tuned for Standard D.

    Ahhhh! This sounds so damned awesome! I'm a bad drummer who wants to learn some guitar. I love your jams, and that DanElectro is super sweet sounding. For cost savings, what do you recommend, Hiwatt or Supro for the amp? Not gigging, not professional, just want something that allows me to dial-in that sweet sound that you get. Thanks!

    • @EricHaugenGuitar
      @EricHaugenGuitar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think for "ease-of-dialing in" the Supro nudges past the Hiwatt (both good as you can tell).
      However, you won't be able to get the Supro crunch without an attenuator so that's tricky.
      Wait a couple of weeks - Vox just sent me an AC4 handwired and that has a master volume so that may be the easiest to dial in of all!
