VW T4 TRANSPORTER - WIPER STALK - STEERING COLUMN SMOKING

Here is the wiper stalk from my VW T4 2001 plate. Nearly every time I turned on the ignition the wipers came on with out turning them on and a whisper of with smoke and a plastic burning smell occurred.
Turn the ignition off and back on again and it stopped. so I done a bit of investigating and bought a second hand wiper and indicator unit from eBay for £40 and decided to fix it.
the job took 15 minutes and I do not really have that much experience but it was easy. Here is the findings. there is a great video on youtube showing you how to remove it ... just follow that it is simple.

The same thing happened yesterday on my wife's VW Lupo. It seems they have the exact same stalk.
