Another interesting review guys, I enjoy the laid back and humorous approach you bring to these reviews and you clearly know your stuff. Where it comes to Von Trier I have to agree with the comments made about his later stuff as I'm not into film that tries to push things to the point where it's simply trying to shock but it's still under the banner of "arthouse". I thought "Breaking The Waves" was brilliant, back when I didn't have a clue who Trier was and the ending, I'm not too ashamed to admit, had me in tears. Really made an impression that film and that was probably due in part to the horrible aspect of religious zealotry that runs through it...anyway, interest piqued enough to check Europa out as it's an earlier one, hopefully in a copy where the aspect ratios do it justice.
Emily Watson is simply superb in it. I think that truly great films are often ones that actually make you forget you're watching a film to some extent because you become so immersed in events and Breaking The Waves had that effect.
Try The Idiots and Dancer in the Dark - even if the first has some hilarious scenes, the ending (as in Breaking the waves is achingly human), and Dancer in the Dark, with brilliant music by Bjork manages to be both a Dark comedy hommage on West side Story and The Sound of Music which despite the most convoluted absurd storyline (Catherine Deneuve as a factory worker- and it works...) and an ending.......well if Breaking the waves brought you to tears, you' e gonna need an entire box of kleenex tissues and an empty stomach (for the punch you'll get). Lars - for the people that stick with him, is as good a master manipulator as Hithcock ever was (and his intros for The Kingdom are as good as any of Hitches intors for HIS tv series). Lars likes to kick you against the chins, but his shocks are never gratuitous, always meaningful, and Melancholia is a brilliant comedy about the end of the world. which asks the brilliant question, if this was your last night, how would you spend it ? Provocateur? Naahhh, brilliant satirist.
Thanks for the comment, ‘The Element of Crime’ is excellent, I have yet to watch ‘The Idiots’. That’s more in line with his later work than his earlier films, I feel. But I have nothing against that though. I’ll try and make time for it soon.
I watched it in cinema at the time when there was no dvd yet and I ve actually never watched any of his other movies back on dvd too. Listening to what is repeatedly said about Lars and interviews, etc, is actually like seeing another movie, i-e "entering", but is that all really needed apart from the last part of his own life that he has the right or not to tell publicly? His work is typically pre or anti social media era unlike Lynch for instance, in the way Godart has been anti whole movie system at all in fact. Deconstructivism of the seventh art. In other words saying Cinema is dead now, that's all folks ! TH-cam is the winner when you seen ppl focusing on how the guy looks like or trying to identify to his life and how he will end it. *Oops with the exception of Dancer in the dark
Could not wait to see this in the theatre when it came out in the U.S. as Zentropa, and was not disappointed.
