  • All the details on how to replace a rotted sailboat deck core from the top. I used a Fein Multimaster to cut the deck, scrapers, chisels, a biscuit router bit, wire brushes, etc.

Some info on SAFETY. USE YOUR RESPIRATOR!!!
New OSHA Rule for Silica Exposure
Exposure to crystalline silica has been known to be a problem since the pyramids were built. In fact, silicosis is one of the oldest known occupational diseases. You might encounter Respirable crystalline silica -- very small particles at least 100 times smaller than ordinary sand -- on beaches and playgrounds. It is created during work operations involving stone, rock, concrete, brick, block, mortar and industrial sand. Exposures to respirable crystalline silica can occur when cutting, sawing, grinding, drilling or crushing these materials. These exposures are common in brick and concrete operations.
The new crystalline silica rule from OSHA, covering workers in general industry, maritime and construction, aims to bring worker protections into the 21st century. "Exposure to silica can be deadly, and limiting that exposure is essential," said Dr. David Michaels, assistant secretary of labor for occupational safety and health. "Every year, exposed workers not only lose their ability to work, but also to breathe. This proposal is expected to prevent thousands of deaths from silicosis -- an incurable and progressive disease -- as well as lung cancer, other respiratory diseases and kidney disease. We're looking forward to public comment on the proposal."

I know this is a bit of an older video but thank you so much. I just rescued a very neglected Balboa 26' with a spongy foredeck and now I'm thinking that the side decks might also be affected. It's my winter project so I'll be cutting out and recoring all if this while the snow is flying with the hopes of looking forward to some spring camper cruising. Really appreciate that you made this video. Thank you.

Thanks, I discovered my own wet core problems last night (Paceship 23) and was most discouraged, but your video makes it seem surmountable.

Thanks for this well done and informative video. I also have a Balboa 26 that's been sitting on a trailer behind the barn. Got an 8 inch dia hole where the mast step goes. This will be helpful in my repair planning.

Thank you for sharing. I just got my first boat which has the same problem.
Now I know that it can be repaired fairly easily and how to do it :-) Cheers!

Excellent presentation. Well organized. Very informative and nicely delivered. Thank you for taking the time to do that. One question not covered was approx how many man hours are invested into each step of the project: marking/cutting the deck; digging out all bad wood; cutting/fitting new ply; epoxy/relaying deck top; finishing/taping/applying Kiwi Grip. If possible, even ballpark hours would be helpful. Thanks!

I think I spent about 60 hours total.

I noted when beading deck Hardware, you are using devils glue. When that gives up and starts leaking you should consider using Butyl tape. Butyl tape is much easier to use and last longer than devils glue. I only use devil's glue for project that are below water line.
BTW I really like the way you got the rotten wood out.

See the Yahoo group photos. I recored the cabin roof as well. This time from the inside. I used curved cauls and 2x4 jacks and increased the upward pressure by using shims. Photos under the folder "A B26 Fixed Keel Elizabeth Marie."
