They really are well engineered. Over engineered I think really, but that is part of what makes them such great cars!! Good luck on your restoration and keep watching for the episode on my Euro 78 restoration!
I own two i8 roadster (beside some other cars) and I allways think it's crazy to own two nearly identical cars. 😂 But now I think about buying an aditional Coupé, since two same cars are nothing...congrats to your 928s! Great cars and dream of my youth!
I own 3 Porsche’s 2001 Cab, 71 911t & a 90 928GT which is my favorite by far! I bought it from the original owner in 1994 who got it as a wedding gift In Boston, he had his choice of any car he wanted and picked a new 928GT, he and his bride drove it across the US, got a few tickets on the way and had it serviced at Beverly Hills Porsche and put it on a boat to Maui. He was a trust fund baby and had the choice of any home he wanted. I met him thru friends and ended up playing poker at his house every wk and noticed the 928 in his garage covered with boxes of Xmas decorations and a flat tire. He lost the keys and hadn’t driven it in a yr, it had 3800 miles on it! A yr later he got a sent from Germany but then the drivers side door glass won’t go up and it set in his garage another yr or so. Every time I saw him I jokingly told him I’d be happy to tow it off for him so he’d have more room in his garage! Then one month his trust fund ck didn’t come thru and he owed everyone money, out of the blue he called me asking if I was interested in the car! I told him I was just a working stiff and didn’t have much money, but really loved the car. He sold me the car at an extremely good price and I’ve owned it ever since! We moved from Maui to Arizona last yr and it now has 18,000 on it and Finally gets to stretch its legs! IMO the GT is the best 928 Porsche made, the gearing, suspension and engine put it ahead of even the GTS!
WOW! What an incredible find and story! What a great car. The GT was quite a car. They should have used the GT cams in the GTS and then that 5.4L would have really sung the song that it should have from the get go! I am in a wheelchair so I can’t drive the manual cars, but I bet the GT and the 5 speed GTS are quite amazing machines! I certainly did love owning all four model years of GTS for about a 6 year period or so. They are such great cars. Just really love them so much!
Dallas has some great driving spots especially out here in the Terrell Kaufman Rockwall areas. I have a house out here and have enjoyed driving my 928s out here since I bought mine in 2015. BTW sounds like you have just as many 928's as Roger here in the dfw area. Aka 928srus.
Once upon a time I was close to Roger on the 928 count front, but not anymore. I only have 5 now. I had 14 at one point. Two of those were parts cars but the other 12 were really really nice.
Thanks for the visit and yes, the blue one was perfect! '82 with 3775 miles on it when I sold it about 5 years ago. Miss that car because of its absolute perfection, but it was really not one to drive because its value was in its low miles. The color is one of my absolute FAV Porsche colors and in fact my race car was painted that color nearly a decade before I got the '82.
Yes, the GTS certainly beats out the S4, but not by much. I do prefer the flared rear fenders of the GTS and the aero mirrors and body colored rear wing too. S4 gets you about 95% of what a GTS gets you, but that last 5% is the best part!
@@pcar928fan Dear James, as you well know, the GTS has more grip, better low-end torque, better brakes and offers a more precise steering, probably due to the different set up. The GTS is quieter and slightly more comfortable. One advantage of the 5 liter engine over the 5.4 is that it burns much less fuel, especially at steady cruising speeds. When you push real hard, they both do 3km per liter. I enjoyed my 928S4, travelling across Europe some thirty years ago, but the GTS is just a much better car. I still have a manual 1995 which I use a couple of times a month and, even though I own faster and more sophisticated cars, the 928 GTS remains one of my all-time favorites.
@@davidcontini7217 everything you said is right on. The only disappointment with the GTS is the oil consumption, fuel consumption, and the fact that it was not given a hot enough tune. That engine could have been tuned to 400hp from the factory without much effort if they had wanted to. They did just enough to get by. It was still best of breed and still stands out as one of the all time greats from Porsche!
@@pcar928fan Yup. The oil consumption is high, especially if you drive fast and really push the engine hard. But one liter per 1000 km is in spec. The power is sufficient for the chassis. Perhaps an extra 10% would be okay. Another thing. I remember when I used to travel across Europe in the GTS, I could hardly put 7000 kms on the rear tires, so for long trips I would have to make sure the tires were brand new. But this is true about most sports cars.
@@davidcontini7217 even the S4 has quite high oil consumption on the race track. I have been shocked by how much oil I needed by the end of a track weekend! In my experience a 928 chassis can handle 500hp without any problems. I tend to run more than a bit of front camber and some toe out so the inner shoulders of my fronts wear faster than my rear which I keep pretty square to the pavement.
Amazing cars. I commented another of your videos too, I'm a lifetime 928 fan. Never owned one though but I'm just a fan. You have so many 928's. Did it ever even cross your mind to get a 911? Just curious as the 928 people seem to be well... different. ☺
Actually the first Porsche I ever drove was my uncles 1984 911 Cabriolet. I wanted a 911 first but I broke my back in 1990 and in 1996 when I was looking for my first Porsche I could not afford a 911 with a tiptronic trans. They were still too expensive for me. So I looked in to the 944, too slow, the 951, no automatic trans and finally the 928... JACKPOT! Found a beautiful 1988 S4 still in the original owners hands and I was able to buy that one! I still have it and love it! Over 10,000 track miles on that car! So many great memories!
Well, I guess it depends on what you want your car to do. The later cars are definitely faster and better long distance GT cars. If you want your car to be more of a sports car then the early cars are indeed superior. I would say that if you drove a 928 EURO S back in 1980 and then drove a 1980 911 SC you would be shocked by how much better then 928 is than the 911. It would feel just as sporty, though it would definitely feel heavier, and it would be far faster than the 911. In the US it would be a little less cut and dry since we did not get the 300hp EURO S engine. The early cars are for sure more nimble than the S4 and GTS.
@pcar928fan Thanks for the quick response. In that case I'm definitely interested in the early euro 928s. I heard twin distributor is the one to go for but it's a rare find. If you have any euro 928s let me know. I prefer a clean car with service history. I'm looking for a fun back roads sports car.

Yea, I didn't produce this video and I am trying to figure out how best to change things out. I think I might have to do a voice over and add that track to the original video and delete the existing sound track...
I love them all, but I have to say the GTS is still my favorite! The arrow blue '82 in this video is an amazing car. I sold it several years ago. It had only 3775 miles on it when I sold it! It still smelled like a new car inside and it was as close to perfect as a used car could be. I wish I could have kept all my 928s! I got up to 15 at one point! Down to 5 now.
Very nice collection! Do you agree that the early cars are the best drivers (of course with the manual transmission)? Also is the gts worth it to pair with an early car?
The early cars have a beautiful balance and handling. Just lovely to drive. When you drive them you realize how serious Porsche was about replacing the 911 with the 928 at the start of the 928 development. The S4 and GTS are clearly grand touring cars. While they can be great fun and fast on a race track they are not the scalpel that the lighter (during the days of production) 911 were. I think if you want a minimalist but quality 928 collection having one of each of the 4 body styles is the real way to do it! OB, S, S4, GTS!!! You can't beat a GTS, but they are also very expensive, but look carefully and deals can be found! Thanks for the comment!
