Hydra will always be my favorite Toto album, but then again I'm prejudice-Toto was my first rock concert, and it was May, 1980, Hydra tour. They absolutely blew me away.
imo, 1: Toto 2: Toto IV 3: The Seventh One 4: Hydra 5: Turn Back 6: Fahrenheit 7: Isolation 8: Kingdom of desire 9: Mindfields 10: Toto XIV 11: Tambu If you can’t tell, I like their 70s and 80s albums. I think it’s mostly because of Steve Porcaro’s synth work, I think it helps lift Toto up. I like basically all the songs on their debut album, I love Toto 4 mostly because of good for you, Rosanna, Africa and waiting for your love. Africa was actually the song that got me into Toto. The seventh one doesn’t have one bad song, they all should be hits, but to me it lacks the “classic” vibe that the first few albums give. Hydra is a very good album. The title track, 99 and white sister being my favorites from that album. I like how on this record Steve Porcaro went all out with the polyfusion (a synth) with all the brass sounds. Turn back is criminally underrated, although I guess it good it is, because Toto IV would have never happens because of it. Million miles away, English eyes and if it’s the last night are my favorites from this album. The only downside for me in record is live for today, which got redone in the music video and it’s is so much better than the original . That’s all I’m gonna write because if I kept going I’d have to hand this in as a research paper lol.

I don't exatly have a precise order but as it is very common these times to make tier lists, I'm gonna make mine (and we really don't have the same taste, like REALLY!) S - Hydra / Mindfields / Falling in Between A - Toto / Isolation / The Seventh One B - Toto IV / Tambu C - Turn Back / Kingdom of Desire D - Fahrenheit Each tier is chronologically ordered, haven't listened to Toto XIV yet. If any questions about why I placed this album there, feel free, I love these kind of conversations.
@@rjakobej After some thinking (if you're interested), I'd say that B and C tiers can be swaped at every moment. Both Toto IV and Tambu are (with the exception of 2-3 tracks each) really balanced in the mood and quality, so they are great to listen to as albums but (with the few exceptions still in mind) there's not much that stands out. On the other hand, Turn Back and Kindom of Desire are kinda unbalanced as there are some moments/tracks that don't really go somewhere or are not very creative, but there are also moments/tracks where it's like WOW it's so great, unique and well crafted...
Pretty good ranking; at first glance I think my ranking would be similar ( I would probably have IV even lower on my list), and I like your takes on the albums. I recently sort of did a fly-by of all their albums over the course of an hour as I had re-ripped my collection to FLAC after having initially only ripped it to mp3, so I was just giving a listen to songs here and there to see if I could tell much of a quality difference. As I went from album to album listening to some tracks in their entirety and just snippets of others, I got to Tambu and have to admit I am probably least familiar with that album as it isn't one of my favorites, but damn, even that album is so well done I might have a hard time ranking it. I'm generally not very analytical about my music but as Toto is one of my favorite bands I feel like I should really know how I'd rank them. I am now going to have to give the whole collection a good listen and see if I can come up with my own ranking.
I disagree in much of your ranking. I would have Tambu, debut album and Hydra much higher. Hydra is my favorite one. I agree in your opionen of the third album. Its quite underated record.

The reason why Turn Back and TOTO itself have not been as "successful" as they ought to be was due to the record labels, in my opinion. Nobody does rock and its variants better than TOTO. Live of Today and English Eyes are brilliant songs indeed. Favorite song....Home of the Brave
Yes. Record Companies didn't advertised their albums after TOTO IV as much as they should have. The less important they got in the US however, the more recognition and love they got from Europe and Asia
Decent ranking, I agree with The Seventh One and Farenheit they are phenomenal albums and the most musical. Joseph Williams for my money is the best singer that TOTO ever had. Saw them live in Sydney 2019, incredable band.
Great list, but there’s some things that I don’t agree with, and I think you meant to say Stranger In Town insetad of Stranger In The Night. You might of got Lovers Of The Night, and Stranger In Town mixed up 😂
"Fahrenheit" belongs besides the album "Kudos" from Trio Töykeät to the albums my CD players have played most frequently in past 20 years. This is my personal 'worst to best list' of Toto Albums (a couple of those I haven't listen to for a while): 14 Isolation 13 Turn Back 12 Through the looking glass 11 Kingdom of desire 10 Tambu 9 Mindfields 8 Falling in between 7 Toto 6 Toto IV 5 Hydra 4 Toto XIV 3 Old is new 2 Seventh One 1 Fahrenheit According to some of the comments, I should listen to my lower rated albums again.
@@rjakobej I hate "Isolation" too, because of singer Fergie Frederiksen's high pitched voice. i mean they had Steve Lukather whose voice was awesome, what did Toto need the screamer fergie for?
@@martinrasinger6306 He wouldn't be able to sing most of their hits for the lack of range. The 2 albums he recorded as the lead singer are good but lack variety. Fergie was great. Just my opinion of course.
XIV would be higher on my own list, but I hate the weird production on it. The mix is awful. Falling In Between would be my #1, followed by Isolation, The Seventh One, the debut and then Turn Back (which I agree is underrated). I can respect Fahrenheit being someone's #1, but I think only about half the album works songwriting -wise. All this being said, if you love Toto circa '84 through '88, you should pick up The Rhythm Of Love by Lava and also the album Artwork by Work Of Art.
thanks for your thoughts :) I don't know Lava so I will check them out. I've listened to Work of Art, I think I really liked their second album. But I usually avoid new bands playing 80s aor because the digital production just doesn't sound right (+ the music is usually too predictable). There were many great bands in the 80s like Dare, Strangeways, Eric Martin (early stuff), Glen Burtnick, Paul Janz... I'm planning on doing 80s related video series, so hopefully soon :)
@@rjakobej The Lava album I mentioned sounds like the long lost cousin of "The Seventh One' at times. Some really great songs there. I agree with all those names you dropped: great bands and music. The first Work Of Art album is their most Toto-like overall, but I can agree that digital production is hit n' miss with a lot of the modern AOR bands.

When he speaks about the album ISOLATION, he reffers STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT( the one by SINATRA) . I assumed he talks about STRANGER IN TOWN .
considering the album he was discussing, Strangers in Town is probably most likely what he meant & was talking about.
