Why do we need the ice/water mixture? The Answer is that when something burns it produces two gases. One is water vapour and the other Cardon Dioxide. When the water vapour enters the U-tube it is still hot enough to be a gas. The Ice/water lowers the temperature and the water vapour condenses on the tube and touches the Cobalt Chloride paper. Cobalt Chloride paper only turns from blue to pink if water is present. It might work with water vapour - and usually does, but here we are showing the presence of a clear liquid and proving that it is water.

One of the products of the burning of the candle is water. This water is as water vapour ( a gas) and this as it passes through the U-tube is cooled by the ice cold water. The water condenses and is turned to liquid. The liquid then reacts with the blue cobalt chloride paper and turns it pink. This is the test for water.
The idea of the pump is to suck all the gases made by the flame into the apparatus and draw the chemicals through the U-tube and the Limewater bottle. It is run first to show that air does not change either and then when the flame is on the pump sucks the H2O made and the CO2 through the equipment. The pump is called an aspirator and is usually connected to a tap running with water. As the tap runs a little air is sucked out and this provides a gentle flow of the hot gases produced from the flame to go through the equipment and set the tests off.
The pump sucks the air through the system. The products of the combustion are also picked up and detected by the Cobalt Chloride paper and the Limewater.
We want to test the products of combustion so we cooled the ghas and the water condenses and then we testy for it using Cobalt Chloride paper that turns from blue to pink showing that its water.
It is necessary to suck the gases through otherwise they won’t reach the U-tube or the tube with limewater in it. So they won’t then react and show what burning hydrocarbons are made of
Incomplete combustion. Not enough oxygen, so the candle burns and makes Carbon ( soot) and carbon monoxide which will fail the two tests and because its a poison gas not do you a lot of good!!!!
I used a standard aspirator vacuum water pump run from the tap. These are cheap but getting rarer these days because they can use a lot of water. I could have used an ordinary vacuum pump. These are easily found on Amazon.
This is only for complete combustion. Incomplete combustion will produce Carbon - (soot) not easy to test for, and carbon monoxide. There is no specific test for carbon monoxide gas.

Hey Sir Philip, what is the purpose of the ice cold water in the experiment?
One of the products of the burning of the candle is water. This water is as water vapour ( a gas) and this as it passes through the U-tube is cooled by the ice cold water. The water condenses and is turned to liquid. The liquid then reacts with the blue cobalt chloride paper and turns it pink. This is the test for water.

Thanks for the video tbis is sure to help in my upcoming test
Good I am glad I could help. Let me know if you need any videos I haven't done yet
Can anyone please clear a doubt of mine?
My question is - Why is the pump used?
The idea of the pump is to suck all the gases made by the flame into the apparatus and draw the chemicals through the U-tube and the Limewater bottle. It is run first to show that air does not change either and then when the flame is on the pump sucks the H2O made and the CO2 through the equipment. Philip Russell thanks for that answer it really helped me.
Hi
What if you're asked what's the purpose of the pump at the end of the experiment
The pump sucks the air through the system. The products of the combustion are also picked up and detected by the Cobalt Chloride paper and the Limewater.
What is the equation for the reaction that takes place?
Hydrocarbon (methane) + oxygen -> carbon dioxide +water
why is water collected in the u-tube please?
We want to test the products of combustion so we cooled the ghas and the water condenses and then we testy for it using Cobalt Chloride paper that turns from blue to pink showing that its water.
@@PhilipRussell thank you very much
Very well made! Subscribed!
Why is it necessary to apply suction to the apparatus?
It is necessary to suck the gases through otherwise they won’t reach the U-tube or the tube with limewater in it. So they won’t then react and show what burning hydrocarbons are made of

Thanks my teacher is really bad and didn’t even bother to show me this practice so I thatched this video.
Thank you very much Philip Sir 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️
wait what’s the answer to ‘ as the candle burns the funnel becomes coated with soot. why does this happen? ‘
Incomplete combustion. Not enough oxygen, so the candle burns and makes Carbon ( soot) and carbon monoxide which will fail the two tests and because its a poison gas not do you a lot of good!!!!
thank you so much 😊 !
Which type of pump would you use? Where can you purchase it from?
I used a standard aspirator vacuum water pump run from the tap. These are cheap but getting rarer these days because they can use a lot of water. I could have used an ordinary vacuum pump. These are easily found on Amazon.
At 4:17 there is no third part of lid so the carbon dioxide can easily escape into the air
Its just a mistake. It should be fully sealed.

Sir does this test for only complete combustion or also for incomplete combustion. Thanks
This is only for complete combustion. Incomplete combustion will produce Carbon - (soot) not easy to test for, and carbon monoxide. There is no specific test for carbon monoxide gas.
This one came in 2020 GCE exams...exactly
How to set up the pump?
its just a water pump that sucks air out, its quite a fascinating device that need a video on it own to explain, ill get started about creating one!
