I put Triple Crown Thornless Blackberries in my garden a few years ago, They take up the whole fence now and produce huge berries unlike my thorned berries. The long "whips" can be guided to touch the ground and it will start a new plant where ti tip touches.
@@littlequickfire3296 if you ignore them completely, they’ll spread a lot. Fortunately you can direct the whips pretty easily to create new plants wherever you want them to go.
I was farmer from young age. Growing up in Nepal I had no choice but picked up traditional farming techniques. Some of them proved to be wrong sadly. Here I am 10 years later trying to grow hot chillies for myself in this pandemic. Your videos have been inspirational for me. Hoping to go through all of your videos to expand my gardening skills.

They don't always grow from the crown. The can (and do) spread up to 5 feet or so from where they are planted, but the variety effect this greatly. Also, the are 2 main types, floricanes and primocanes. He is explaining how to tend to floricanes which fruit on 2nd season growth earlier on the spring or summer. Primocanes can be treated different because they will fruit on the new growth of the plant, in the fall (aka fall bearing). Triple crown are floricanes, so I'd you chop the wrong ones the won't be fruit until next year, but primeark freedom are primocanes and you can cut them top the ground each year and you bwt a hefty fall crop.
They are so good. The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Earn 15% and become a TRG Affiliate for our seed & garden shop Sign Up Here: bit.ly/4aarkDD
If you get trailing varieties, they will spread a fair distance..I've had canes pop up 6-8 feet away from where I planted the crowns. If you get erect varieties, the tend to stay closer to the crown. Also, watch the hardiness zone. I am in zone 5b, and some years they do well, other years they mostly die from the cold and only survive close to the ground.

Blackberries take me back to when I was a little boy following my grandfather around through the briars picking wild blackberries in Pa. I’m finally going to plant them in my backyard this spring. I’m going with Prime Ark Freedom and Ponca. I’m hoping to make some good memories with my grandchildren, minus the thorns and scratches. 😊 Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

Thanks, Gary! I definitely want to plant some of these. They appear to provide a little privacy as well. I plan to plant them along my fence, and hopefully make LOTS of blackberry jam.

I want to plant next to our fence next year. Already planning Spring😊🌱. Gary- knew I could find BB info on your site. How far from fence should we plant? Guess for picking I’d need access to back side?

Just watched this video, hoping there might be a tip that I've overlooked with my thornless blackberries. Ive had 3 Triple Crown and 4 Baby Cakes in zone 8 (Pacific NW) and this is year 2 for them. Blackberries grow wildly rampant here - never in short supply and I love them - this is the perfect climate for berries. Anyway, I gave mine a light feed early Spring and keep them mulched, have only watered once or twice this year as we've had excessive rainfall here since late Summer last year. I guess production is good - berries are just ripening now. I sampled one the other day and just like last year I found the taste very offputting. The berries are nice and big but I note there are tiny areas on the fruits that are discolored (tan) and the taste is NOT what I've anticipated. Normally blackberries have that wonderful bright flavor and I would say mine, especially the triple crowns are musty in flavor. Sorry for the long ramble - I'm just so darned frustrated with them and looking for insight. Mind you my raspberries and blueberries have been off the charts this year; I guess that's the good news. Thanks for any ideas you might have. I should say mine are in nice raised beds and receive full sun. They are trellised much like yours. The plants look gloriously healthy.
The reason they taste bad is because they are not ripe. When they are ripe, there will be no tan spot and they will be duller. Same with bing cherries.

I live in an apartment and don’t have a ground to transfer my plant from Its pot (i just have a patio). Now the branches are growing suuuper tall and idk what to do with this plant 😭. Any suggestions on how I can take care of it if I can’t pop it into the ground?

Those are Himalayan Blackberries, which are an invasive, foreign species originally from Armenia/Iran. They're the ones with giant thorns that get 15' tall. Native trailing blackberries have smaller thorns and mostly stay on the ground.
Yep! I can’t even imagine intentionally planting blackberries in your yard. Want blackberries, go for a walk anywhere in late July and August, bring a basket.
Thank you for the video. I am in CT and bought 3 apache thornless black berries this sprint- summer. Well...it gets under zero F here. I just now learned from seller to protect from frost. Do I just bring then in the garage every year? I have to pay due to the weight. OR...can they survive a CT winter on my 2nd story deck? One is about 3 feet tall.

Question...do the blackberries grow larger and larger from their green to black stage? I have HUGE plants in very large containers (30-gal each) and a bazillion berries growing. Mine berries seem smallish. Most are still green or starting to turn reddish. This is a 2nd-year plant, so it's the first time my plants have produced fruit. Last year, they were just beautiful leaves.

Gary Pilarchik (The Rusted Garden) thanks! Wasn’t sure if new canes turn brown over the summer. Just bought a blackberry and will try to grow in a pot.
Thank you for the blackberry video. I just picked about a half gallon this morning. They have been in the same area for many years. Unfortunately, I was unable to maintain them last year, so I'm trying to catch up. They were covered in an invasive vine, which I'll be working on for a many more days to clear them out. Now I've seen there is a white fungus like substance on several of the canes. Do you think Hydrogen peroxide solution will help this?
I think h202 would work. Always test spray. Please visit, The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More

I have a few thornless blackberries, they grow really well, But they aren't producing hardly any fruit. there are blooms, but that is about as far as they go. I have fertilized with 10-10-10 which i was told is good. I have some thornless Raspberries as well, and they are doing better, but not anything like in your video.. Any tips to increase fruits ? These plants are over 3 yrs old now.. What to do ?
If they are blooming, the fruit should follow. Your fertilizer is covering it. You can work on increase P and K next year. But I am not sure. Question : If the canes that are harvested stop making fruit and eventually die off, why wait until the next season to remove them when you can remove them as you harvest their fruit ?

I ordered 3 blackberries varieties and live in zone 9a houston texas. I came across your channel when research to grow blackberries. Love your video and all blackberries canes you have. May I ask? Are blackberries have any diseases and how do you treated them. Thank you so much for all your help and time. Thank you so much 🙏
I am sure they do but I have not encountered any here in Maryland. I would ask local nurseries etc but you would only treat if there is something significant in your area. There isn't a disease I am aware of that would wipe out the plants and totally kill them. Maybe some leaf mildew and such effects them. Good luck. Hi Gary, my blackberry is just one long cane. I got them last year and planted them in the ground but instead of becoming a bush they became a single cane. I live in Southern California and I don’t think they like the heat much. How do I get that single cane to become a bush? Thanks in advance for any advice
They arent normally bushes so I am not sure what type you have. The roots system will product more canes but they are going to be canes not like a blueberry bush. Sorry. Why do you have to leave the canes until next Spring? I have the same question for raspberries. Do you have to worry about winter damage if you cut the canes back in the fall? Seems like it would be easier to cut the canes back in the fall when you can tell which canes have fruited. Thanks.
You could cut them. As long as you know you have varieties that dont produce on old canes. Please visit, The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More

I put Triple Crown Thornless Blackberries in my garden a few years ago, They take up the whole fence now and produce huge berries unlike my thorned berries. The long "whips" can be guided to touch the ground and it will start a new plant where ti tip touches.

I just bought this variety, can you keep them pretty contained or are they really hard to keep from spreading?
@@littlequickfire3296 if you ignore them completely, they’ll spread a lot. Fortunately you can direct the whips pretty easily to create new plants wherever you want them to go.
Can we eat these blackberry vine or not.??
I was farmer from young age. Growing up in Nepal I had no choice but picked up traditional farming techniques. Some of them proved to be wrong sadly. Here I am 10 years later trying to grow hot chillies for myself in this pandemic. Your videos have been inspirational for me. Hoping to go through all of your videos to expand my gardening skills.
So glad to help and good luck!
Thank you. This is the post I’ve been wanting to find. Seeing how the blackberries grow and how to trellis it. I learned a lot.

They are very good sweet and sour taste and very healthy one too I have blackberries bush in my garden
They are so good.

Absolutely agree, the same as my experience with the spreading. Definitely research the varieties before buying.

Mine spread everywhere. Up to 6-8 feet away from the original plant. I’m constantly pulling out canes that spread.
Interesting. Blackberries will spread but not as bad as raspberries. They are good to dig up and sell or swap.

So yours are a trailing variety instead of an erect variety, correct? It sounds like the trailing varieties spread further.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

Same with bing cherries.
wow nice berries
Thanks

I live in an apartment and don’t have a ground to transfer my plant from Its pot (i just have a patio). Now the branches are growing suuuper tall and idk what to do with this plant 😭. How do you know which canes to cut or keep.? Do yo mark them?
Old canes brown (woody) and new ones more green than brown. If you're unsure keep them all and then cut the vines that don't start flowering. Cheers

Does anyone know if they need full or partial sun in Florida.?
On the ones I bought it says full sun, but in southern Cali it gets 110 in the summer should I try part shade?
Part shade with bright light (if that makes sense) they need a lot of sun light to produce big sweet berries
Any protection from high sun hours would be good.

I lived in OR for 8 years, and the wild blackberries were all over! I so miss Rainier cherries and Marionberries.
In the Willamette Valley in Oregon, we can't keep the blackberries in one spot for anything! They're considered an invasive weed by some.
Is June too late to plant in Tennessee?
Are these thornless? Thx
They are

Wow😍
Question...do the blackberries grow larger and larger from their green to black stage? I have HUGE plants in very large containers (30-gal each) and a bazillion berries growing. Mine berries seem smallish. Most are still green or starting to turn reddish. This is a 2nd-year plant, so it's the first time my plants have produced fruit. Last year, they were just beautiful leaves.
Yep

Hi there! Will the new non-producing canes still flower but not fruit?
Do you think I could set up a blackberry wall, having the blackberries planted in containers?
It is possible. I would go with nice size containers and use a rich container mix. They are hardy and should do well

Great video. BlackBerry bushes all along fence line. Trim in fall or spring?
Gary mentioned in the video to prune early spring .
I remove dead canes in spring. Light prune later spring too when leaves are popping out.

You could keep track of them. I just what till the die. Sometimes nutrients are pulled back to plants but that is speculation.

Sorry.

Where is Maryland zone 7? I’m in MD too. I want to create a berry garden on my acre. Do you have any more posts on berries? Can I mix blueberries and blackberries? There are tons of native wild blackberries in the woods in my neighborhood so I figure I can be successful with this.
