It was put up for public comment and the same objections were put forth. It was passed with the objections (but that was when ANC was in majority). Now they are objecting and taking it to court as is their right according to our (flawed) constitution. But ANC MK EFF ActionSA etc still in majority so majority still feel that the dominance of Afrikaans out of proportion to their influence should be stopped. The DA is the most racially integrated of all the parties. The DA would do better to concentrate on the 7 million middle class Blacks who could add to their economically privileged voter base. Come on DA, wake up! You're losing focus by accommodating these Afrikaners whose home is the FF+
The BELA bill would be okay if the provincial education departments were competent, and not focused on making all schools ‘equally bad’. The people on these school boards are far more competent than the MEC’s for education… the results speak for themselves. The bigger question is why is the government education system so bad especially for the poor.
In black schools class sizes dropped from 60+ to 40+, Most 45-50. So improvement but still bad. What we have is the majority of schools were abysmal and funds there to improve them somewhat - but only by giving less to the privileged. These privileged school get less than they used to but still have inherent advantages: infrastructure, rich clientele, teachers come to the school that have received the better education, more educated parents = better learners. So not making schools equally bad but spreading the monies amongst 100 schools instead of given it to only 1. For decades it was R42 per learner as opposed to R644 to white learners that is 15 times more.
Why are teachers not trained properly? Is that a white person's problem. If we have a crap teacher in our school. We insist on meeting with the gov body

Schools are a anc problem. 30years and what did they do... Stole all the money, cant build any schools. Its always easy to take existing well maintained white schools. Your life is a lie.
Yoooh this ANC government, why do they act only after a crisis has occurred?, why the blame games?, this is all because of cadre deployment. This government is a shame.
If you feel that some voices are not being heard or that certain individuals are undermining the unity that the country should aspire to, it might help to consider how important it is to keep dialogue open-expressing frustrations constructively can go a long way in helping the country heal, but it's also crucial to listen to each other and try to build consensus. Would you like to explore more of these issues-whether it's about the flag, South Africa's history, or the way forward for the country?
How many Zulu and Xhosa schools did the ANC built. Why bother with Afrikaans schools and make it a racial thing. It's like the ANC want to divert the problems they have created by not building schools for all languages then they invent laws to make it look like they care about the " racial problems". In Cape Town we have children of all races in all schools, so what is the problem? Please ANC concentrate on the schools you promised you will build for all languages. Stop interfering with school laws and stop looting.
The focus is on the wrong thing here. Afrikaans community BUILDS what they need. Why is the government focused on trying to TAKE OVER Afrikaans schools? THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD BUILD NEW SCHOOLS.
@clintonvandenberg1189: When did Afrikaners begin the project of establishing their own schools? While it expanded significantly during the Apartheid era (1948-1994), the roots of Afrikaans-medium schools actually go back earlier. Although many schools were built and supported under apartheid policies, this period cannot fully represent the origins of Afrikaner schooling, as it was tied to a system of oppression affecting others.
One of the ANC’s major failures was allowing other public schools to continue teaching and learning in Afrikaans. Non-Afrikaans families are forced to take their children to private schools if located in areas such as Pretoria North and Centurion. Public schools should do away with Afrikaans as the main language. Afrikaans speaking parents must take their children to private schools
This is true. In Pretoria East there is an abundance of Afrikaans schools but no English schools. So I'm forced to send my child to an English private school at a huge cost. But in saying that, the school includes Sepedi which my child enjoys.
Ooh! My 2 granddaughters have learned Afrikaans from Grade RR- R, and from Grade R to date, here at Tshwane, they don't have problems and they are doing Afrikaans as a mother's tongue language because the BELLA BILL approved only Tshivenda, Sesotho and Sepedi languages .
Speak for yourself. My community is 90% Afrikaans with 7 % "white" people. So why don't you come and tell this poor working class community of Afrikaans-speaking coloureds to send their kids to a private school? Hou jou bek, privileged boy.
In 5 years you will try to take those private schools as well. As you will break the maintained once as well. Facts of the country cant be argued against.
We(African children) have been learning all subjects with English except our mother tongue, why are they only fighting it now that there is a possibility for their kids to learn in a different language that is not Afrikaans?
@@dn822 Because of the status quo. By and large the employers speak English or Afrikaans. So to get a job your need to work in that language. Mitchells Plain moved from 70% Afrikaans medium to about 5%. You can hear the Afrikaans diction but because English is the language the parents want their children to spea it. Universities Eng or Afr. So if you want the best for your child pre freedom you had to bow down. ANC not changed that reality so people will resist being taught in their mother tongue as it is prejudicial - no matter how many laws you pass.
English should be the medium for learning in urban areas. We'll be forever spending more and more money than we should because schools have to cater to each and every language
That would be ideal. One language. BUT there many people whose parents cannot speak English. I notice that you mention Urban areas but Mdantsane is in a urban area in when I taught there 10 out of 81 learners in a class could understand English. So this is a long term project. However the advantages given to Afrikaans is a throwback to when only English and Afrikaans were recognized languages. We should have that all exam papers are in english with a 1 page translation into the learners chosen home language. This would be a low cost step in the correct direction. Getting home language teachers to mark each group so as to allow them to write in their home language where they feel constrained would also be a financially feasible option
The English are the minority, sorry but the white English class can gladly further destroy your school system and your social democracy. Afrikaans people built our schools away from government and no government in South Africa ever laid a brick to build us schools! I suggest you go and research what the brittish and liberal English class did to Afrikaans people in apartheid and why we built our own schools away from your idiocy
I hate what AfriForum stands for, but I agree with them on the language issue. The fact that the government did not make education available in all languages is not their problem. They don't want their kids to be taught in a language foreign to them. They have developed Afrikaans up to tertiary level and the government cannot just do away with that.
lack of skilled trained people you need skills that is the problem and people that do not turn up over weekends but claim overtime .this is the truth. engineers left the country so what now. and after 30 years if you do not do maintenance and build new infrastructure specially in urban areas that is the problem. all municipalitys abuse the finances to their will and inrich themself instead of careing for citizens that do pay.and illegal connections is stealing not just from the municipaltys but from their own people.
Since Kallie Kriel is advocating for pre-eminence of Afrikaans as the official language of the school he should do this interview in his 'mother tongue'.Currently MKP parliamentarians are being ridiculed for inability to be proficient in English.
Honestly i didn't look at it from Afriforums point of view, We should officialise our languages in school, but our government is not serious about translating Education in any language Like science in Pedi or Xitsonga, We shouldn't make the same mistake of adopting 1 Language, remove afrikaans from the argument, put Xhosa in the equation, then U looking at a different point. The point of the bill is to ensure that schools offer multiple languages. A school should concider the linguistic demographics of a area wen choosing the languages it offers.

This man is hiding behind indigenous languages, why only marching now? If they cared so much about equality and poverty we would have seen it in their actions. BELA is here to stay and its officially a law.
Just because something is law does not mean we should not protest it. That was the reason the oppressor said they denied selling us land and letting us into their schools - because it was the law. All unjust laws we should fight against.
The problem is inclusivity. English learners should not attend exclusive Afrikaans schools. Is this progressive??? The concourt will decide. Clearly Afriforum is not ready for change. So it means Afrikaans schools should remain exclusive without catering for English learners in those schools??? The concourt will decide. We may not fully understand the bill.
These people are so selfcentered. Afrikaans is the apartheid language. Will never be different. They can pay for their own Afrikaan schools. The indigenous African people have paid enough under injustices.
Afrikaans cannot be on par with other African languages because it's not an indigenous language. We added it like English for the purposes of promoting an inclusive society.
These people wanted to enforce Afrikaans down our throats in 1976 as a medium of instruction in our schools. Then the country became engulfed in riots and they killed our children for protesting. They show no remorse and still want to perpetuate afrikaans as secret and superior to all other laguages. Is unfortunate we still have people in afrikaans speaking community with that mentality. All languages must be treated equally in free South Africa. Apartheid cannot be resucitated.
They do not want to force Afrikaans to others. They simply want to keep their school only Afrikaans medium of education. They problem with that is 1)Their school is 100% Afrikaans speaking but the people who want to attend the school is 70% not Afrikaans. Do they have the right to exclude them because the status quo is Afrikaans medium. 2) Are the using this as an exclusion mechanism for certain groups of people. Most came from English speaking homes where there diction was Afrikaans as people did not want their children to speak Afrikaans to give them a better chance in life. About 20% Xhosa. About 20 Zulu, about 20 Sotho. How do we cater for them. As a poor school we had Xhosa Home Language taught for 3 hours on a Friday by extra teacher. When the DA had a leader whose mother tongue was an indigenous language, they lost voters to FF+
The traditional Afrikaner segment of the population is better served by the FF+
It's obvious the DA is desperate to retain its voter base.

The DA is the most racially integrated party and shouldn’t allow this FF+ group to cause them to lose focus.

We are talking about water drought and every one is focused on langauge? Just shows you where our priorities are
Multi tasking. Just because their is a fire in the house does not mean we should take the white children out first.
Well if Lesotho finishes the new water project and Zimbabwe stops cutting off the countries water from the Limpopo river aswell as rand vaal water is fixed their wouldn’t be a drought… it’s deliberate
May we are not united enough to stand together for issues that are important to us. Right now our kids are dying from eating snacks like flies and we quite. Maybe Afrikaans speaking people are showing us how it's done...unity.

The focus is on the wrong thing here. Afrikaans community BUILDS what they need. Why is the government focused on trying to TAKE OVER Afrikaans schools? THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD BUILD NEW SCHOOLS.
The Afrikaner community WERE the government when they build those schools
Which part of the act/bill implies a takeover?
You are misinformed, the BELA ACT if public schools, schools that were built with tax payer money
wrong, Government buildt it not afrikaneer
@clintonvandenberg1189: When did Afrikaners begin the project of establishing their own schools? While it expanded significantly during the Apartheid era (1948-1994), the roots of Afrikaans-medium schools actually go back earlier. Although many schools were built and supported under apartheid policies, this period cannot fully represent the origins of Afrikaner schooling, as it was tied to a system of oppression affecting others.
The BELA Act has been signed into Law,including sec 4and5 of the act.

We(African children) have been learning all subjects with English except our mother tongue, why are they only fighting it now that there is a possibility for their kids to learn in a different language that is not Afrikaans?
Question here is why did you not fight for that?
One compulsory language with the mother's language better.
English as language of instruction but other language subjects should also be taught.
Why is the minister shouting bakithi. Can she even whisper? 😭😭
Excited to be on tv, angie's twin sister
I hate what AfriForum stands for, but I agree with them on the language issue. The fact that the government did not make education available in all languages is not their problem. They don't want their kids to be taught in a language foreign to them. They have developed Afrikaans up to tertiary level and the government cannot just do away with that.
the problem will always go back to the ownership of the of land and economy.
This one is talking like a spactator, she is a minister she must come with plans and solution
lack of skilled trained people you need skills that is the problem and people that do not turn up over weekends but claim overtime .this is the truth. engineers left the country so what now. and after 30 years if you do not do maintenance and build new infrastructure specially in urban areas that is the problem. all municipalitys abuse the finances to their will and inrich themself instead of careing for citizens that do pay.and illegal connections is stealing not just from the municipaltys but from their own people.

The point of the bill is to ensure that schools offer multiple languages. A school should concider the linguistic demographics of a area wen choosing the languages it offers.

But we do pay. I pay R2000 per month per child and that is at a fairly cheap school with many SGB paid teachers.
The slaves of the Dutch invented Afrikaans, not the "white occupiers".

There are many dangers in letting Gov decide on what is best for the school. But at the same time there are dangers in letting the school perpetuate the discriminatory status quo.

How do we cater for them. As a poor school we had Xhosa Home Language taught for 3 hours on a Friday by extra teacher.
