"Partners in Motion" is the second single from Wild Nothing's forthcoming album, 'Indigo', out 08/31/2018. Order here: WildNothing.ln... Artwork by Aaron Lowell Denton.
When the song modulates at about 2:50, I was like "...wtf...How'd he do that?" So I picked up a guitar and figured out the basic transition that was used. It's a genius change imo. 10/10 songwriting! (keeping in mind I've done this in 10 min over a cup of coffee...) the song appears to start in G#min or its relative major, B major. Basic progression of intro is E F# G# (which in B maj is IV V vi)(or in G#min- VI VII i). But the modulation is subtle and in my HUMBLE opinion, expertly executed. When the progression changes and the sax solo comes in, the new progression goes V IV V IV V IV, then goes to C#, then leads back to QUICKLY resolve to the G# min. Here's where it gets interesting and blew my mind: After resolving that G# minor cadence, it goes up chromatically (one half step) and uses the note A as the transition to the new key, A min/Cmaj. The progression here is the same as the intro/verse, but now in the key of A min. I love learning how my favorite bands do this kind of stuff, I feel like it expands my own musical hipness. I did not know how or even why you would modulate from G#min to A min...aka B major to C major. In conclusion, the modulation takes the song up one half step, which may be obvious, but it just shows how one note outside of the main key during a drum fill can be such a great way to change keys. And to get back to the home key of G#m/Bmaj, a direct modulation is use. I don't hear any transitional notes, it seems to just go BAM! ...Right back to the tonic key. This is why I love Wild Nothing. PS. The new album is wonderful. I doubt most people will be that interested in this analysis, but hey, it's just for fun and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Now I have a closer relationship to this song, which makes me identify and love it even more.
I was not only interested but that was the part of the song that jumped out at me the most and I'm very grateful for this. *goes to play around with chords*
Waiting to start work early on morning right in the heart of downtown Phoenix. This song comes on the radio, very cool vibe with all the buildings lit up around me, very 80's feeling.
This song definitely leans more into the Life Of Pause era, at least to me. It's like Life Of Pause revisited, but with an 80´s vibe to it. Also, I can notice that Jack has been working a lot on his voice and range, he sounds better than ever.
I always thought Life of Pause and just about most of his work since Nocturne has had a heavy '80s vibe to it, and this new album seems to continue exploring that sound. Definitely agree about his vocal range improving. Seems to get even better with each release.
I know! His voice just keeps getting better! Empty Estate was like a transition between Nocturne and Life Of Pause, but I wouldn't call it something with an 80's vibe. Life Of Pause definitely has it tho. What I think makes *this* Really 80's is the sax solo, straight out of a music video, lol
True. I realized the sax in this reminds me of A Dancing Shell from Empty Estate. That might be the song I was attributing an '80s sound to off of that. I also just read a new interview with Jack stating that this new song is something he's been "inching towards since Empty Estate". I have to say that this does feel like it could fit right in on that EP.
I was so psyched when I saw this song this morning on Jacks Wild Nothing page. I was in a bad place when I became a listener, and I'll never forget. I was at a club in Frederick setting up my keys for the set that night when Shadow came on the radio. I've been mesmerized since.
Excellent new material! Loving the atmosphere in general, how all the instruments are mixed together with the vocals, great production, sounds beautiful.
What a nice surprise to just randomly youtube some Wild Nothing music and find out a new album comes out in a few weeks lmao. Awesome. I think I need to follow more closely my favorite artists.
LYRICS: I caught you in the doll house Drinking coffee with your new wife How is your new life swiping through headlines? How do you find the time? You two look very nice (very nice) Silver in your eyes The sinning that's committed Red and open wide Of life in the wild You're looking very nice You're looking very nice Now I'm obsessive, walking through keyholes Fixing picture prints, letting the soil drain I had a temper, but now I'm delicate I keep it to myself, I keep it to myself Silver in your eyes The sinning that's committed Red and open wide Of life in the wild Partners in motion, beautiful devotion Take over dream nights to find love Partners in motion, beautiful devotion To know you can, you don't have to go Partners in motion, beautiful devotion Take on my dream Partners in motion, beautiful devotion

when i hear this i imagine being at like a boring wedding or boring event and there’s some guy looking at me and finally we just leave and go do random stuff in the city at night and then i lose him in a busy area and i never see him again
Today makes exact 2 years since I've seen Wild Nothing live for the 1st time in São Paulo and now I'm getting this amazing new music? Feels amazing!!!!
I think about waking up early and having breakfast with your significant other. You both are appreciative of another day and heavily in love with one another wishing that time could stop for a little while
Man in the beggining it looks just like any typic indie song, but definitely a remake of the experimental synth and groovy chillin chords of the 80s era that feels like a real good jam
Easily best song on the album. It's a far cry from where he started with Gemini but it's all too gorgeous to undermine. Shallow Water and Letting Go are nice... but this sound is something truly great.
If this dropped in 1984 this would hit number 1
Maybe
it should still get that any year it drops

wow you're a genious: "The song appears to star in G#min or its relative major."
I was not only interested but that was the part of the song that jumped out at me the most and I'm very grateful for this. *goes to play around with chords*
bro, you should be working for NASA
thanks for this.
@Trevor Combs bro do you even music
I've never heard a band or song so perfectly capture the sound and spirit of Roxy Music. Absolutely perfect.
If GTA5 was made today, this wong would be on Radio Mirror Park... and it would completely rock.
Yessss, I swear I feel like I've heard this song or a similar song on GTA 5. I was looking for it right now but I couldn't find it
Very Tears for Fears vibe, can't wait can't wait
Or Fears for Tears The Working Hour
Waking up every morning to this in Tampa Florida
This song means so much to me. Thank you, Jack.
*DROP THE ALBUM ALREADY I CAN'T WAIT*
This is my new favorite band, and I’ve only heard two of their songs.
Tim Cantrell how was Nocturne?
Waiting to start work early on morning right in the heart of downtown Phoenix. This song comes on the radio, very cool vibe with all the buildings lit up around me, very 80's feeling.
I've only heard it on 93.9 KWSS and on TH-cam.
Vintage wild nothing. Love this
Exacto!
Yeah! (I loved The Drums on your profile pic too!)
Holy shit the tropical summer vibes are strong with this one. Goes perfectly with face up from washed out

You're right, it does sound like it could fit right in Empty Estate perfectly
more like empire estate, better revisited !
I don't understand how this song isn't more popular, it's just so good. I haven't play it out since it came out. I can't say the same for many songs.
YES.
Amazing song, crafted with sophistication and sensitivity fusing 80s new-wave and R&B funk aesthetic.
Saw Wilde Nothing perform this in Chicago on November 9th. Blew me away. Jack Tatum is an incredible talent. Truly.
This sounds more 80s than the 80s
Right
This could be used in a 80s high school teen coming of age drama movie like Breakfast Club
This very much could of came out in the 80’s but it doesn’t sound more 80’s than the 80’s.

@@princealbertz or too gun 2
I love everything this band creates.
Eel People especially Nocturne! 🎶❤️🔊
They deserve to be a lot more popular

Just heard this on the radio and swore it was from the 80s not on a 2018 album. awesome!
Scott M89 omg are you serious!
Octave "adjustment" at 2:50 just blows my mind !
"Partners in Motion" debuted at #5 on the New Alternative 40 Chart this week!
Excellent new material! Loving the atmosphere in general, how all the instruments are mixed together with the vocals, great production, sounds beautiful.
So much groove and funk in this, topping it off with some tropical vibes. Awesome tune!
What a nice surprise to just randomly youtube some Wild Nothing music and find out a new album comes out in a few weeks lmao. Awesome. I think I need to follow more closely my favorite artists.
Wasn't too hyped on this when I first heard it, but it's grown on me and now it's spectacular
That bass!!
thinking this album's gonna be lit
This song is so amazing
LYRICS:
I caught you in the doll house
Drinking coffee with your new wife
How is your new life swiping through headlines?
How do you find the time?
You two look very nice (very nice)
Silver in your eyes
The sinning that's committed
Red and open wide
Of life in the wild
You're looking very nice
You're looking very nice
Now I'm obsessive, walking through keyholes
Fixing picture prints, letting the soil drain
I had a temper, but now I'm delicate
I keep it to myself, I keep it to myself
Silver in your eyes
The sinning that's committed
Red and open wide
Of life in the wild
Partners in motion, beautiful devotion
Take over dream nights to find love
Partners in motion, beautiful devotion
To know you can, you don't have to go
Partners in motion, beautiful devotion
Take on my dream
Partners in motion, beautiful devotion

You sure it's 'I caught you in the dog house'? I hear doll house.
Petar This little memo.on MySpace and stereogum.please.mark.Howell work.fix death threats um.Christie world could cause cancer sad about the kill.no.idea um.yeah not gettimg.paid Obama.allowance.

It really sounds like he's saying "connected" not "committed" but I may be wrong
I absolutely love this band with my whole heart.
Been a fan if WN for about 10 years now and this is the album.

Wild Nothing getting into synthwave a bit? Perfection.
EDIT: I've been listening to this non-stop since it was posted. I LOVE this song!

He's done it again. Something special is happening in Jack Tatum's brain.
Probably good drugs
Magic is within him
Beautiful. Though Nocturne will never be truly topped, this will run it close. Two songs so far. Both different. Both brilliant.
I had the opportunity of seeing them live and my mind was blown by each track they played. They did more than deliver. LOVED IT.❤️
I feel this song deep in my soul 🌙✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Those synths though, god damn.
Worthy of an award
Listening to this feels so fulfilling
This is absolutely excellent. Reminds me of the Nocturne album but with a hint of Life of Pause. Absolutely magnificent sounds :)
