Glad to see you back on the youtube grind. Honestly I enjoyed all the Phandelver content you made, so many good ideas.

This is awesome! The part about intentions not jumping from calm to murderous in an instant and telegraphing emotions with body language is golden. I've had those same doubts as a DM and as a player.

Thank you! It's a really good habit to get into as a player, so you don't accidentally steal someone's spotlight by ending a conversation too early :)

One of my favorite videos, along with the joining of phandalver and icespire suggestions. Took me a while to finally listen to this one but got there in the end.

Great stuff! Every DM should watch this, study this, and make use of this advise often.

Haha thanks Rob! Maybe one day I'll hit that 100k - I reckon I'll hit 10k before the end of 2021 :)

@@heyitsMattyP here's hoping. I've used your lost mines ideas to great effect. This is the third time I've ran it, but my first time incorporating some of your suggestions. My players are loving it!

Thank you! I think this is one of my last greenscreen videos, because with my busier release schedule, I don't have as much time for the extra setup / pack-down or the post-production visual gags

@@heyitsMattyP It's the least I could do! Plus you're charismatic and seem super likable. Welp. Guess I'm joining the patreon.
Should also mention you have an NPC proxy in my game who allows my players to exchange purified chardalyn for magic items. So I guess you're likable in both life and in D&D, as my players love "Perkins, Quartermaster of Candlekeep."

I hope this doesn't come across mean, because I've been a fan of your work for a while now and don't think any of it has been bad, but your last couple of videos have each felt like your best work yet. Like, markedly better presentation, practical advice, and tighter pacing all while still keeping the charm that got me following you in the first place. Really appreciate all that you do.

Thank you! Very high praise :) Though fair warning - there are much looser videos coming up as part of the Table Talk series, which are completely unscripted.

Been loving a lot of your ideas like the Lost Mines stuff and chase mechanics. Thought I'd pipe in here and mention something you might find interesting, namely, Pathfinder 2e diplomacy mechanics. One time the rabbit hole led me to some guys (Knights of Last Call) explaining how in that system, NPCs position on a typical 1-5 scale (hostile-helpful) is altered by their interaction with PC's. Persuasion and deception can slowly net you info you seek but intimidation can get you almost everything but their disposition is automatically downgraded 2 steps as they now think you're a dick lol. Im sure there's more to it than that. Kinda complex system but it makes me wonder if there's more interactions worth mining...

There's no harm in giving an NPC some flare. It creates an impression and gives your players clues on how to best deal with them. And honestly the parts of RP with NPCs that your players are enjoying never need to be streamlined. If you want your NPC to be distracted from the conversation because they're busy working at their craft or if the NPC is too busy leching on the most attractive male PC to answer questions, that's fine. But once you've established the character of the NPC you're fine to get down to business.

Im two session in in Mines of Phandelver and i was starting to think exactly what you describe as bad interactions. I dont feel like im in control of the dialog, and rather just make stuff up on the fly. Guess its a matter of practice. Thanks for the advice.

Gatekeeper NPCs in the story aren't great no matter if they need to be won over mechanically or through roleplay. One of my players really got upset that a powerful noble in a game exploited the players to get what he wanted so when the players went back to him to get help with a problem he opened with "Eat a dick". There's no great way around that but I adjusted the story to create another path because there was no earthly way Eat a Dick wasn't going to get you on to the next act. And it created a cost in future game sessions when that noble started referring to the character as "Oh yes.. eat a dick, I remember you..". The point is that they created an obstacle rather than necessarily closing a door. Obstacles can make the passage from one act of the story to the next more entertaining when they're managed well.
