Hey Harri, sometime you have to check out Foreigner, their 1977 debut album is great (Cold As Ice, The Damage Is Done, Feels Like The First Time and Long, Long Way From Home) and their songs were played on the radio a lot with Styx, Boston, Supertramp, Heart and KANSAS. It's about time you got back to Heart and KANSAS. Styx Castle Walls and Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man) are both worth checking out, too.
I'm glad you found that particular video of Come Sail Away, because the "official video" of it, cuts out the entire middle keyboard section(!), and the song kinda loses somethin' that way. "The Grand Illusion" is another great Styx song on the same album, and here's some of their many other hits and deep cuts: "Light Up" "Lorelei" "Suite Madame Blue" "Lady" "Fooling Yourself" "Blue Collar Man" (Renegade) "Lights" "Babe" "Why Me?" "Eddie" "Love In the Midnight" "Too Much Time on My Hands" "Rockin' the Paradise" "The Best of Times" "Nothing Ever Goes As Planned" "Mr. Roboto" "Don't Let it End" "Show Me the Way" "Love Is the Ritual" (there's a ton more too)
I think the motif of the song is that even if childhood dreams might be broken or lost, that doesn't mean you can't still dream and adventure anew.
First it's like a friend saying, "Come on! Let's go adventure!" Then it's a spiritual awakening, with angels saying to come with them. Then it's pure flights of fancy and imagination running free, the sky's the limit, when the aliens take you aboard their starship, and your mind is totally free.
But really, the whole time the band is beckoning you to follow their lead, like the pied piper leading you away from lost dreams.

I have been listening to Styx from the mid 70's. They were great live but they aren't the same now without Dennis DeYoung. I love watching the live performance of Suite Madame Blue. It was written for the bicentennial and Dennis DeYoung sings it. I like Tommy Shaw's Crystal Ball. The band added Tommy Shaw when they saw him playing in a club. He and Dennis DeYoung both sing lead. Castle Walls, Pieces of Eight and of course Lady. Lady is the song that made them known.

A song by them that no one else has reacted to is "Born for Adventure" from the album Equinox. You may like it and it shows them in a good light too that many may not know.
The three members of the band that sing lead vocals are Dennis DeYoung (keyboards), Tommy Shaw (lead and rhythm guitar) and sometimes JY Young (Lead and Rhythm guitar/Keyboards). Dennis and Tommy are the primary two.

Dennis sang many of the bands early hits, but they rounded out their sound when Tommy Shaw joined them in the early '70s. Their harmonies and songwriting got so much better at that point. That's why they are legends to this day...
The lead singer of Renegade is Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung was the lead on this song. Back in the day they shared the lead singing duties.

I LOVE the best of times! my dad used to drive me and my sisters to swim practice every day (a super long distance - like an hour or more each way) and we would listen to his CDs… the most popular in our car was the greatest hits of styx, and we were ALL obsessed with “the best of times.” super special to me.

There are three lead vocalists in the band (at least during their heyday). This one is Dennis DeYoung. Tommy Shaw sang lead on Renegade. James (JY) Young sings lead on songs like "Miss America". JY also splits vocals with Tommy Shaw on "Snowblind".

I don't know for sure who's singing, but yes, they had multiple great vocalists. This could be Tommy Shaw., but I don't think so. After Styx he was vocalist for a supergroup called Damn Yankees. If you like Styx you should check out R.E.O.Speedwagon. They are really good friends with Styx and tour with them often. And have more than 20 top 40 hits over a 50 year career including the number one album of 1981 called Hi Infidelity. (Keep On Loving You, and Take It On The Run were the 2 biggest hits from that album).Lots of great songs from earlier in the 70"s Give a listen to Roll With The Changes. Also Time For Me To Fly and Riding the Storm Out.

Dennis DeYoung is the principal singer. Tommy Shaw (Renegade) and James Young sing lead on several songs. Dennis DeYoung tours with his own band now and performs much of the Styx catalog as well as new music. I saw him and his band perform Styx’s Grand Illusion album from start to finish for the album’s 40th anniversary. It’s the wonderful album that Come Sail Away is on. I hope to see him again in February.
The 70s, at least in the US, there was a large interest in UFOs, and anything alien. So it’s no wonder the imagery showed up in a song too. As we got into the 80s there was an interest in new technology and “big brother”. Styx released a concept album called Kilroy Was Here featuring a song called Mr. Roboto.
You should check out "Castle Walls" and others from "The Grand Illusion" album. All really great stuff. BTW, Tommy Shaw may well be immortal. The man does not age! Great player and singer!!

I read it as the band saying you can live your usual life, life on the water and ride in the usual boat(s) or you can get much higher (with us) and try new adventures (drugs) and fly away. Embrace new experiences, in whatever form that might be, is the message I get.

They were #1 ticket sales draw for 4 or 5 years in the late 70's to early 80's.
This album is one of their best. There's an occasional third singer, James Young. Miss America is his song on this album.

If there was ever an underrated band, it's Styx. (IMHO)

Personally, I think the best albums by them were "Grand Illusion", "Equinox" (pre Tommy Shaw), and "Pieces Of Eight". For some fun (and a funny song), check out "You Better Ask" from Styx II featuring John Curulewski, who Tommy Shaw would later replace when he decided to leave the band.

Their most famous ballad is" Lady". You will absolutely love it. DeYoung sings it too. I was a female rock singer back in the day and I absolutely fell in love with this band and another band like this called "SuperTramp". Check them out. This was the theme song of our senior class in high school.

This is a 2-Dimentional song. The 'lyrics are a 'subterfuge', for the 'under-lying' solos. 'Isolate' the words & listen to the solos in the background-guitars,keyboards, drums, synthesizers...WAY ahead of their time...like the band-'BOSTON', that's another one to check out.
