- This nest was so well hidden that an allergic client of mine, mowed over this nest and was swarmed! I had to remove this nest quickly, and thoroughly! Assassin underground yellow jacket nests can be deadly, so its paramount that the nest is REMOVED, not just a attempt to treat it and left to die.
Once the nest is removed, and Im finished appointments for the day, I bring the nests home, and fed them to my Emus, Chickens, and Rhea!

I can't believe he didn't discover that a lot sooner. It must have been just at the edge of where he normally mowed and it finally got big enough to be disturbed.. Glad he was OK.
This happens a lot. People mow all summer without incident, then one time it sets them off and they're discovered.
That’s how we discovered the yellow jacket nest that set up shop inside the back wall of my house last year! I’d been in an out of that part of my backyard a million times without incident, and then I had a tree-cutting crew out there on Halloween cutting down some trees I wanted out, including several along the fence line near that particularly. I heard the chainsaws suddenly stop, followed by a volley of swearing, and I looked out the window to see the yellow jackets swarming out! Fortunately nobody was hurt, but our next call was to the exterminator!
Here’s the kicker-this October, my dad called out the same tree-cutting crew (they’re one of the local companies) to get rid of some trees and trim some others at _his_ house, and while they were trimming the crabapple tree by the garage, they came across a hornet’s nest the size of a football used by the NFL! Again, none of us knew it was there, and again we’d been in and out of there all summer! Fortunately it was a hornet’s nest instead of a yellow jacket’s nest, and equally fortunately it was first thing in the morning in October, and those little guys were too cold to get annoyed. When Dad pointed it out to me and my kids at Thanksgiving, our mutual reaction was “Holy F***!!!!” Thank the gods for hard-freeze weather!
Amen
@@dragondancer1814I remember stumbling upon those damn ground jackets as a kid when walking my dogs, right at the dog poo station they’d set up camp, and I didn’t know that till they flew out at me.
They chased me all the way into my house, got stung on my middle finger, and on my neck, certainly haven’t forgiven them since. Been irrationally terrified of all things that go buzz ever since. They even gave my dogs a good stinging, my poor girl had a sting mark on her ear until she passed.
@@urgae9125 I’ve hated yellow jackets ever since I was 12, after I got stung on the leg during outdoor PE! I was standing in line with my classmates, just minding my own business, and I suddenly felt a sharp pain on my upper thigh. I looked down to see a yellow jacket on me, and you know I was pissed! I’ve hated those little bastards ever since!
That was a lot of future queens in the nest. Given the number of them it's safe to say there would have been multiple colonies not too far from the original nest. Doris wasn't easily swayed by fresh nest even though her little taste of freedom wasn't too long.
I once had a ground nest in my back-yard. I placed a large squirrel-cage fan from a mini-compuer (this was the 1980s) over the entrance, and spent part of an evening on my back deck listening to the "ting! ting! ting!" as insects would leave the nest, get sucked into the fan, and turned into minced wasp. The next morning there was an impressive plume of wasp bits downstream of the fan.
good idea
minced wasp 😂
It's fascinating to watch how aware of "others" these birds can be. Doris is pretty careful not to grab your fingers when snapping up larva!
Poor Doris! I'm glad she's home safe and sound. Looks like she found a comfy place to rest in the meantime. 🙂
Pesky birdie
It’s always amazing to think that one queen is responsible for all those nest members. Glad Doris is back. Love the blue tint on her neck. Rhea the Rhea is looking fantastic as always.
The way he talks to his animals ❤
Yeah, the baby talk is the only thing negative about this channel.
@@pakviroti3616it actually helps (at least dogs) to understand you're talking to them and not just talking in general, The change in pitch is what gets their attention, otherwise, you may just be talking to another human or on the phone
@@aylac5971 How much understanding do you think a chicken has? I've owned dogs, when they heard my voice they would look at me to see if I was talking to them.
Those little yellow jackets will be on you before you even know it. I saw one on my knee when mowing and I waved it away. Suddenly I felt some stings and I gtfa. These were some powerful stings from some miffed yellowjackets. It was scary. Brought about 20 in the house with me. All were in my leggings and most were in the bathroom. By then they were all kinda intimidated and were no longer stinging. We got them with a bug zapping racket. I never would have guessed they were around. Mowed many many times and was fine.
Your video has answered one question. How many queens? Just one? Wrong! Many, many queens! We let the colony collapse on its own but next year gonna try to discourage these queens next spring from living nearby and repel them into the woods away from mowers.
Been doing HVAC for 22 years in PA. They love underneath the outdoor unit pads and in the service disconnects. I always give them a tap and watch before I start working. Same thing on a roof doing commercial rooftop systems..they love the disconnects and the heating side of the system that’s not being used. No where to quickly escape on the roof!
I was surprised to see queens coming out as part of the defense squad. I thought they were always deep inside the nest, being protected at all times Great video!
The queens and males were just trying to escape. The queens will attack when cornered, but they are first and foremost just trying to get away.
whats next a queens cheer squad
It makes me so anxious when pets, especially birds when they've escaped. Sometimes they're hard to get back even when you find them! They don't cooperate as much as you want them to lol. Luckily our rooster is highly food motivated and it recognizes the sound of chicken feed shaking in a bottle. Glad you got Doris back
What a naughty birdie. I helped get her in, too, don’t forget😝
If you're Hornet Kings partner, I wouldn't mind seeing you on video also. Family involvement is more important than people really know.
Yeah, and I remember I could have beat both of you unmerciful by the end of that escapade 😆😅🤣
@@HornetKingOfficial 😂😂 I wouldn’t want to mess with the Hornet Queen!
@HornetQueen…you tell him pretty lady! I hope you’re doing well..I miss seeing you in the videos 😊 I hope you and the family have a Merry Christmas! ❤️💚🎄
I recognized the queens coming out! Wonderful how much I've learned from this channel!
I have enjoyed many of your videos. A few months back I stepped on a underground nest, they were smaller, assumed eastern yellow jackets, I got a couple stings. I retreated. I didn't know where the actual nest was. Lots of leaves, vines, etc. in the woods. I came back and hit the general area with Delta Dust. I could see them covered with dust and saw where the opening was. The next morning, most were dead but I dusted the opening again. I don't have your gear or birds to feed.
My mother wanted me to mow her garden spot with her push mower so I started mowing. Mowed over a yellow jacket nest and was stung on my jaw. We waited till dark and poured gasoline down the hole and lit it. Next day I mowed over another nest. We again waited till dark to destroy the nest. The third day after the third nest I quit mowing😹😹😹😹
Yes!, I've been waiting for some Hornet King action!
Thanks brother!
Loved the video! Found a hornet just sitting still on a storage rack shelf in my garage today. Got my trusty wasp jar with breather holes and delicately coaxed her into the jar with taps. Screwed lid on and took her outside. I think it was an Eastern; tried stinging the sides of the glass jar, but I didn't examine the abdomen markings. Successful release, and you deserve all the credit! You can't know how much your videos have alleviated my terrible fear of wasp and hornets. Thank you!👍💖
Great video like always. I'm glad you were able to locate and capture Doris and get her back into the enclosure, that was likely quite the task, I can only imagine how it went! I've had cats decide they were going to be the more dominant one cause all kinds of problems and it usually ended up having to take away the alpha attempting one, I feel for you. I think I have it about to have to happen to me again and I hate the idea of it having to happen. Sweety isn't living up to her name but, alone she might be.
It's amazing how uniform the comb is. Wow.
I got a 14-yo cat and a 6-mo kitten. She refers to him as "that F*cking Toddler."
Poor Doris -- Good for Doris for busting out of her pen -- and then sensibly staying near the property line. Good girl, Doris! TEAM DORIS!!!
You read my mind on having me hear the buzzing and swarming of the yellow jackets. Best regards Nikita.K
Awww, poor Doris!! I'm glad she was okay after breaking out of the fence and that you were able to get her back in!
happy to see Doris didn't wander off too far
She's a good birdie
That was a great removal HK..🎉😮 Those seem to be really aggressive even towards the camera itself..🙄😊 I'm happy you was able to get Doris back in the enclosure..❤ She's so sweet and a good girl..😍🤗 Take care..👍💕🔥👊
“you see the queens coming out” that’s them sending in the boss. “we’re getting killed out here, send in the boss”
Hearing the buzzing with your headphones on just gives you shivers
It's amazing you still are dealing with yellowjackets this time of the year, nice catch buddy, do you have an update on the airial yellowjackets nest you installed in your barn earlier this season?
This was late September.
Yes I will be putting together a video about the relocated colonies.
notifcation squad!!!
As a person very allergic to bee stings I thank you one less nest.
the voice over to your videos sounds like you actually like your job and enjoy your work for a living,,, i just would like to offer my congratulations to you because there are tons of people who don’t get a chance to be proud of themselves and their work 🤘🏿❗️
I stepped on one when I was 8yo. I had crossed the RR tracks behind my house with the older kids. I was standing there and my leg started vibrating and I thought a train was coming. I took a step back and out they came, worst experience ever, got stung 80-90 times according to the doc. Damn you nature's landmine!
I love the emu's dinosaur peets!
You could always call the unmated Queens princesses 👸
I am in Australia and we have European wasps. I Walked into my fenced vegetable patch and was puzzled when my foot sank into the ground. I had not dug any holes in that area. As I lifted my foot, I felt an odd buzzing sensation through the rubber clogs I was wearing. Then a huge swarm of wasps came out. I ran back to the house, not a short distance, followed by the dog. I had about a dozen wasps hanging on my jeans, all attempting to sting. I isolated my self in the kitchen and crushed them with a rolled up paper followed by fly spray which seemed to do little to them. Once I killed them all I looked up the best way to kill the nest and armed with Baygon powder on a 20-foot stick and a dark red touch covered the nest. After a few days of no new activity, I dug out the nest, which was over 3 feet wide. The dog and I were so lucky not to get stung. I have bees now, so no more baygon powder.
European bees are often wasp prey, and their numbers have been in decline. So erasing out wasps is helping bees thrive 👍
@@glidershower www.health.vic.gov.au/environmental-health/european-wasps-pest-control
@Glidershower one of the biggest misconceptions of our time.
A few days ago I went back to a dead nest and dug up the remains. There were small paper remnants and scary looking wasp corpses.
Poor Doris, you feel for them when they aren't happy and at peace with each other. All the best King.
We had yellow jackets nesting under our aluminum siding just above the foundation this summer. This was next to our garbage and recycle bins so we were around them a lot. They were never aggressive and I even had one fly into my ear but it didn't sting. Somehow they were getting into the house in the same area and appearing in our floor to ceiling front windows. We just kept catching and releasing them until fall and then we started swatting them instead. Years ago we had some in a different location plus some who nested in my old truck and those were very vicious and stung me several times. I have a live and let live attitude whenever possible.
They weren't behind your siding, the nest was in the wall/ceiling/floor of your home.
Post Southern Yellow Jacket nest removals more often. I live in Oklahoma and those things essentially behave like Killer Bees and I've been attacked by them dozens of times.
I post interesting removals, not based specifically on species.
@@HornetKingOfficial Fair enough.
The way he talks to his animals❤
“Empty nest syndrome!”
I've been watching a nest here in Pasadena Maryland. Not sure what kind of underground yellowjacket it is. Anyway, colony has been dying as it got cold here. Was just down to 3 small bees coming up to get morning sun and going back down. Until this Saturday. It got warmer last 2 days. When I went to see the nest, there were the small ones and about 12 large queens or males, Idk which, pushing their way out of the tunnel! Didn't think anything was left in the nest. Would show the pics if I could. What's going on? Males or queens? And why don't they hibernate in the old nest?
Another great video! I'm so glad Doris is home, safe and sound. Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas, and a Happy New Year.🎄
My last underground yellow nest , I just used ammonia, GONE
I've never seen so many queens like that! I think I assumed that there was only ever one queen, or if they produce another queen they get kicked out to make their own nests.
There’s no telling how many queens you’ve vacuumed up out of there
Nice!
Keep up the good work!
She really tries to get the comb and not your hands. A sign that she is gental and sweet.
Doris the escape queen. another great removal and video by the Hornet King!
All the respect for ya, HK! I would not wanna be you for a minute! 🌟🌟🌟✨✨✨🏆🏆🏆🥇🥇🥇
Got a wasp question. Im in the UK and go to car boot sales in summer. Means standing for hours in one spot whilst dozens (not exaggerating) of wasps get up in your face from 5am onwards. Just regular small wasps. No stings yet. Gently swatting them off seems to do the job. Tried DEET, lemongrass, mint, all kinds of remedies. But the whole joint is just swarming with them. Probably because of the bins and food trucks. Not just our stall. Its all around.
Sorry for long message. But any tips. Its been good exposure therapy for my wasp phobia lol but getting a bit annoying.
I think the remedies might have been what aroused the wasps' curiosity to begin with, lolz. All I can think of on how to dissuade them is to avoid any colognes /perfumes and wearing vivid clothing colors, it has helped me when I've done yardwork.
Try getting into a water-only shower before going to one of those events as well, and let your bare human smell do the rest of the work of letting wasps know you ain't food (yet).
Doris seems so sweet❤
Doris was playing hard to get 😊
At least you got Doris back in the yard. I'm not sure I'll spell this right but I dreamed of Vespula Sclamosa Southern yellow jackets last month.
Hello, another great intervention with lots of queens as a bonus.
I don't know about you but in France the wasp season is ending. Keep it up and good luck!
Phil of Dordogne
I’m saying holy cats for the rest of my life now lol
You and me both 😄
Favorite part is when you feed the larvae
I think I'd use more than one vacuum. Maybe twelve. And a flamethrower. Oh, and the pressure washer.
This is oddly therapeutic to me lol. Learned plenty!
Wow you are saving his life. So many of them
More queens than a drag show!
Doris just chilling in the woods, vibing lol.
Nice birdie
Great video thanks for sharing there was a lot of big queens wow
Just for grins, you can introduce the Jackets or whatever w/ "Welcome! I am here to sting you!"
Can’t/ believe so many queens were in that nest.
Dang no sqwerrry squirrel this time???? Dang. 😂
😆
Thats a good vacuum cleaner ad. Hopefully you get sponsored with a top of the line dyson
I wouldn't take a sponsorship. Especially from a brand I don't use.
Doris is using those legs and toes to jump or climb the fencing and launching herself over. It's a corner, so she has extra support. I guarantee it.
good episode!
Do the wasps attack the camera on the tripod because it is something new in their area or is it some sort of electronic field attraction?
They attack anything out of the ordinary around the nest
I WONDERED why u just don't stick nozzle in hole. That owner has my sympathy, I TÒO, was stung on a riding mòwer also. And I am highly allergic also. 👍
He said they won't come out and the foragers won't try to get back in. So he would get less if he stuck the nozzle in the hole
I wanna see what cleaning out that vacuum and disposing of the yellow jackets looks like
Thank you for making your shorts the same as the long form.
I was beyond curious what kind of bird that was and couldn't find the info in the short
Good God definitely has lots of queens ready for next year's generations. Most queens are born from early September to as late as December depending on your location since I live in central Texas our first hard freeze is around or before Christmas
Sheesh good timing those queens were about to go off and start some more colonies
I think your emus and chickens will be very happy when their favorite food arrives. There are many wasps and hornet larvae. I've seen hornets sting people. It's very scary because hornets sting people who are allergic to hornet venom.
Omigosh. Incredible!
Imagine your taking a hike and you see a ostrich😂
"these will become new queens"
Emus and rheas be like "this become my new dinner!"
Well, they don't eat the adults, though 🫣
@@HornetKingOfficial I guess you need some frogs or turtles for that.
I love it when you do ground nests, they are my fave to watch tbh.
They are best when you get a angry 1, and they bite onto ur gloves and swarm, i know there prob the worst 1s for you, but they are the most fun for me 2 watch lol 😂😂
I must be a sadist or something, im sorry buddy lol.
More queen's than nightingales in Birmingham
Awesome video man. Keep up the good work
You should take two different types of hornets and put them together see which colony wins
It's still creeping me out xD but it's nice to see how the removal part is taking place. Greetings from The Netherlands.
Oh boy, that's a vision of hell.
I love you. Even though Doris was a pain in the ass this week, you still feed her delicatesse.
Great job!
obsessively watching these videos while i work on my finals (sleep deprived and anxious) has convinced me that i have hornets in my walls 😭
Hey! Nice video!
Thanks!
One thing that I would’ve suggested: if the hole is small enough, why not stick the hose of the vacuum inside the nest cavity and at the entrance/exit tunnel that they themselves made? that probably would’ve tricked them even more! Let them come to the entrance that they made only with no sign that anything is out of the ordinary, and only to find out too late that the vacuum hose is still there at the bottom of the tunnel and ready to suck them in!
They'll see that something is off because there's no light coming through the hole. Plus there are plenty of wasps that are out foraging that are caught going through the entrance.
that's a LOT of queens!
Great video
Beautiful property
This reminds of an incident from my childhood. At one point in the winter one of my parents had lit a large lantern we had outside of our house ( it was partially sunk into the ground for stability). So after they lit the fire inside we were enjoying the night until I notice that the lantern was buzzing. Long story short a swarm of hornets had made a small nest inside and when the fire was lit it was directly under said nest which then caught fire. ( The lantern had a door that opened in the side so the nest which had been attached to the top was undisturbed prior) The next morning we opened the lantern to see the aftermath and the colony was torched and all that was left of the hornets was one whose wings were burnt off .
Doris didn't look happy lol.
Doris doesn't know what she wants, so I tell her what she wants 😁
thanks for the video
You're the Oppenheimer of the Wasp World bruh. Destroyer of worlds.
I got stung by 5 or six of them when I was weedeating, just as it got dark and I didn't know there was a yellow jacket hive I just went over. I was hurting that night. But they ended up paying for it the next before the sunrise. I found a hole where they were coming in and out and poured gasoline down that hole and set it on fire. You can see the flame as it burned for 45 minutes. Didn't have anymore problem from them mean pesky after that.
i keep hearing 'down in a hole' playing while watching this.
This is so cool ! Truly fanciful, fantastic and fascinating. 😅❤😂
I wonder if Doris is looking for somewhere to lay an egg could also explain her attiude towards the other female.
Nah. Emus don't lay eggs like chickens. They need a male to get them in business first.
@@HornetKingOfficialWell thats her problem she's frustrated.
