2024 Stuart Boat Show Express/Pilothouse/Walk-Around Boats - All Made in North Carolina!

  • There is a rare breed of fishing boats that were once arguably the MOST popular fishing boats - the venerable cabin boat. This includes Pilothouse, Walk-around and Express styles and we get to see one of each in this video. The crazy part of the three brands we looked at in this video, Parker, Albermarle and Grady White, is that they are all made in North Carolina. It got me to thinking that all the popular Florida brands have seemingly gone away with their cabin models and solely focus now on Center Consoles (and to a lesser extent, dual consoles).
Let me know why you think this is in the comments.

Up here-having a cabin keeps the wife comfy and allows you to ride out some bad weather when it pops up on you.During the late fall you have your canvas for protection from that morning cold and it acts like a green house so for me it’s way more universal.
Down in Florida having AC would be mandatory-that humidity would funk up anything you kept in the cabin for sure.
I’m sure as long as people in colder regions keep buying them Walk around and Pilot house type boats will stay available.

Great video John. We have a 2013 Marlin that we bought used in 2020 and repowered with f300s - very happy!!!

It’s not just fishing boats but boats in general. For folks who want an express cruiser or any type of boat that can comfortably sleep a small family of four, the pickings are slim. Companies like Sea Ray seem to want to chase the Florida market with huge day boats with open bows which limit the boating season for us northern folks, especially on the big lakes. Sea Ray made its name on the Sundancer line - from as small as 24’ up to 50’ or more and you would have a comfortable three-season boat but they have abandoned that style. Now companies like northwest manufacturers like Cutwater/Ranger Tugs are pretty much it if you want an all-around boat.

That Grady takes me back to the nineties, when I was barely an adult, and fishing in the Chesapeake on my good friend Steve's 34 foot sea ray bridge boat. Man, that thing was comfy! Kitchen cabin with a dinette and a nice head, Jack! The dual 454's we're always overheating, and golly, we're they thirsty.

Love my ‘03 2120. As solid as the day it came from the factory and the biggest 21’ you will find. Without that stupid transom livewell thing they put on the new ones, the cockpit is very roomy and can fish up to 4 decently comfortably. People on THT will tell you the cabin gets “stuffy”… quite the opposite with windows open and nice and dry!

Walk arounds are the compromise , fish and overnight. People who want to overnight prefer more space and luxury of a cabin cruiser. Pure fisherman want ease of piloting and fishing a center console. Any boat is better than no boat but the Marlin is an old school fishing boat.

Was in town for the show and both the GW and the Albe were the boats I spent the most time poking around on. Truthfully, both were somewhat underwhelming given the price point but I suspect that's more to do with the current environment than a true market comparison.
As a Great Lakes resident and angler, and I'd note the express, WA and PH is still more common here than CCs for obvious seasonal and environmental factors. Both of the aforementioned brands having pretty good reputations and and at least for the GW, representations around the region. To your point, though... If you're fortunate enough to be in a position of being in the market for a new fishing boat with a sizeable cockpit and an enclosure with a cabin, there's not a ton of other options.

I finally got to see the Grady White Adventure 218 at the New England Boat Show at Mohegan Sun Casino. Wow, what a gorgeous boat with plenty of head room down below, especially when sitting on the toilet. Being 6'3" at 290 lbs, I just don't fit in a lot of boats and I find the center consoles seating to close to the helm. The steering wheel knob is up against the family jewels even when the helm is tilted. But, yeah, that GW 218 is a beautiful walk around.

They really did a nice job redesigning that model.I owned a 208 and never should’ve let it go-I would definitely buy a 218 in the future USED-Price new is just too damn steep

That Albermarle is very, very nice. Grady is sweet too, but the interior layout and positioning of things seems too busy. Those little Parkers are super cool, but that boat is screaming for a different transom design. The way they have it really robs a ton of usable space.

I'd also like to say that $100k for that model Parker is absurd. I don't give a sh!t what inflation and the economy are doing right now, that's bat sh!t crazy even by today's market.

Another good vid, thanks. The walk around Grady reminded me of days gone back when I craved to own a 272 Sailfish. Great memories. Edit: Funny, just mentioned nostalgia after I posted this.

In the northeast, it's nice to be on a boat with a cabin, especially in the fall when blacklisting. My friend has a Parker, so I'm partial to Parkers.

Love my 30 Ablemarle express. Can hit 58 fully loaded with a seakeeper and generator with trip 300s. Ride is awesome too.

These walkthroughs are fun to watch. I also felt some nostalgia looking at the Grady and the express boat. I live in Florida and used to have a Grady White 305 express. What an awesome boat. I had some of the best times of my life on that boat. But in the summertime you would absolutely sweat your b@ll$ off at the helm. It’s just too hot down here in the summer for a pilot house style boat. You can do it but you’ll need to hydrate or have a helm AC. I also think unless you’re going to sleep on the boat that cabin area is a waste of space. I now have a 24 foot center console that gets a lot more hours put on it.

I have a 28 steiger. Amazing in the spring, fall and summer nights but I do need to open the windows when running in the summer. It gets too hot at times.

My Scout 262 Abaco works for me here in NJ . There are way more days that I'm glad for the enclosure than not. Especially for the fall striper run.

Nice boats John but still with over the top insane dollar signs! I think that cabin type boats are more family oriented whereas center consoles are better laid out for fishing. Having had both types over the years, my preference is the center console hands down! Be well.....👍👍

I have been looking for a 30 Marlin for a long time. I think it is a good compromisefor the way I use my boat inbthe NE. I don't like the super forward seating position of the Parker style boats. I hear though I have no personal experience that the Albemarle are great trolling boats but not very stable on a drift. I will get on one sometime to see for myself.

Floridian here, I really like the way they make express cabins more often in Australia. Any fully enclosed cabin boat I've been on in Florida, the cabin is musty and I don't think anyone wants to sleep in that. I like the idea of an all weather adventure boat with a cabin, but it has to have AC and that means a generator too. Makes the boat much more expensive and harder to maintain. My preference would be an express cabin where the back is open so things can dry out and a small portable AC would be an option. Also, these sorts of boats are heavier with a larger draft and at least on the West coast we have a lot of shallow water. Center consoles end up being more of the do everything boat for most families.

Albemarles are absolutely gorgeous boats but 600k for a 30 is absolutely insane. My uncle bought a brand new 35 proline express with twin merc 300s in 09 for 200k fully loaded with all electronics, bow thruster, and generator.

Just sold my Parker in september, not enough time to use... if and when i get another boat it will be a center console. In a 21 ft at least the room sacrificed is too much.

How are those boats called walk around, you have to step up just like other cabin boats to get to the front.

Had a 2019 Parker 2120. Unfortunately it had a variety of build quality issues. It also really didn’t handle well especially in a following sea. Sold it and had a 23’ New England CC built. I far prefer the stability and ride of the CC and the likely longevity of a wood free composite build. All that said, boats have become so grossly overpriced I’m pretty sure I’ll never buy another of any type!

I don't get it. I need a place to rest my neck when I fish cause I usually am on the water for around 30hrs straight everytime. And try fishing in NC in January 😂 that's why they do make them

2020 Boston whaler conquest with the pilot house. Ac keeps breaking w everything else. Piece of garbage for the price. Drifts all over when not on plane. We fish it out of stock island and key largo. When the ac goes out it is unbearable in that greenhouse. Center console any day over that thing.
