- This is the Grove 740 RT (rough terrain) how to start, move, use, stop how to quick tutorial.
There is also a ton of additional rigging in the storage compartment under the main deck in the front.
During transportation the A2B sensors (anti tube lock) will be tripped and will activate the crane lock out system. You have to lower both the main hoist and aux hoist to clear the lock out.

3:59 Les says: "this is your auxiliary boom" this is referring to aux hoist or whip line with headache ball

Grove Crane 740TR
Go over Startup procedure and movement first and then crane operations
Check oil, show that coolant is under counter weight
Oil pressure gauge is located on driver side, hard plumbed to motor
While you’re up there checking fluids, remove exhaust pipe covers, be sure to reinstall when done.
Start crane and allow to run, warm up and build air pressure
Everything runs on air; throttle is air controlled so you can’t rev it up initially
Once running, check oil pressure located outside the cab behind the driver seat
Detroit motor requires revving higher to be able to do anything
F, N, R, Gas, brake, Air brake release
Rear steering, crab walk, make sure to be back to straight, otherwise the crane will not work
To shut off, turn key off and hold down engine stop button, reinstall exhaust covers.
Swing lock lever located to the right of the driver seat
Show on outside
If it doesn’t move, you need to swing left or right a little to free it up
You can lock it 180 out, but you can smash the engine compartment in doing so
Start and allow computer to initialize
A2B alarm (Anti two block)
Crane safety devices mounted on the crane head. The sensor activates when the hook or block approaches close enough to the head pulley or block. This assists in avoiding a collision leading to an accident.
Orange light shows up on the computer, this means the weights are hitting the block and tackle throwing the alarm code
Hold down the X button which is the bypass to operate the crane around the alarm code
Show the load charts and there is more info in the books located behind the seat
Boom up and cable down to allow A2B alarm to go off
There is a high speed and low speed switch for the main hoist
Before swinging, make sure swing lock is disengaged
There are two sections of boom, use the larger one first and use them equally
There are painted lengths on the bottom of boom sections to notify you of how far the boom is pushed out
Outriggers
Put feet on using clamps, use wood pads under feet
Buttons to deploy are in the cab, must push a button and the engagement switch at the same time to move them
A2B sensors (anti two block)
One on the Auxiliary line, the small one with the 200LB headache ball
One on the main line with the 850LB block
One on the Boom
All three have a lithium battery located inside, spare in side box
The boom sensor helps read your
Length = boom extension length
Radius = Hook to center of rotation
Angle = Angle of your boom
Crane doesn’t weigh suspended loads or have ability to use the load chart data
Jib is in the stowed position for moving
To deploy, put in the two hinge pins and keepers
Drop to a zero-degree, flat position
Tie on a tagline
Remove 3 pins and rotate the latch. Then walk the jib around and install last 2 pins/keepers
Jib is only for the whip/Aux line
You need to relocate the A2B sensor
Disconnect headache ball using the quick pin
Run the line over the jib, around the shive/pulley and reconnect the ball
Side doors, show oil, grease, rigging and spare A2B battery
Hydraulic oil eye sight located on right side of the crane
Winch drums
Cable must be wrapped properly and have weight on it or it will turn into a rat’s nest
No weight on it and it will unspool
Hour meter & service due tag inside door
More engine oil in with batteries
Show the books
Underneath the crane is a blow by catch can that needs to be checked and disposed of as needed
Reinstall exhaust covers
Love it. Huge thanks to winkler shop - and Les!
yo dis dude pretty funny
Les - if the RT-740 is parked for four (4) weeks, is there any maintenance required before firing it up?
Hello Keith,
I would recommend disconnecting the batteries (have them clearly marked so when they reconnect there is no confusion) also tag the machine that the batteries have been disconnected. (this will help make sure batteries stay charged, a month is a long time for batteries to sit so it may still require a jump start)
Keep exhaust covers on.
4 weeks from now, reconnect the batteries properly, remove exhaust covers, check all fluids and do proper walk around and pre checks before starting machine.
Thank You,
Les
This is so comprehensive, thank you!
